Future Fiction #134 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three upcoming Spring 2022 releases, take a look:

Sundial is a new, twisty psychological horror novel from Catriona Ward, author of The Last House on Needless Street.

You can’t escape what’s in your blood…

All Rob wanted was a normal life. She almost got it, too: a husband, two kids, a nice house in the suburbs. Far from her childhood home, Sundial, hidden deep in the wild Mojave Desert.

But beneath the veneer, Rob is terrified for her oldest daughter, Callie, who collects tiny bones and whispers to imaginary friends. Rob sees a darkness in Callie, one that reminds her too much of the family she left behind.

Running from her past has led her directly back to it — what’s buried at Sundial could never stay a secret forever, and Rob must risk one last trip out there to protect her family, and her future.

Sundial by Catriona Ward. Releases in March 2022 from Tor Nightfire. Having just finished and loved The Last House on Needless Street, I am super excited to read Ward’s next book! I’m loving that this takes place in the Mojave Desert (where I was born), and I love this artwork by Corey Brickley.

A Head Full of Ghosts meets Hereditary in Piñata, a terrifying possession tale by author and artist Leopoldo Gout.

Carmen Sanchez is back in her home country of Mexico, overseeing the renovation of an ancient cathedral into a boutique hotel. Her teen daughters, Izel and Luna, are with her for the summer, and left to fill their afternoons unsupervised in a foreign city.

The locals treat the Sanchez women like outsiders, while Carmen’s contractors openly defy and sabotage her work. After a disastrous accident at the construction site nearly injures Luna, Carmen’s had enough. They’re leaving.

Back in New York, Luna begins acting strange, and only Izel notices the chilling changes happening to her younger sister. But it might be too late for the Sanchez family to escape what’s been awakened…

Piñata is a bone-chilling story about how the sinister repercussions of our past can return to haunt us.

Piñata by Leopoldo Gout. Releases in April 2022 from Tor Nightfire. Nightfire has been doing some great cover reveals, and I had to include both of these! I love this creepy cover art by João Ruas, and I do love a good possession story:-)

Life gets complicated when Death gets involved.

To be born into a family of royal assassins pretty much guarantees that your life is going to be… rather unusual. Especially if, like Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, you also have a vicious allergy to all forms of violence and bloodshed, and an uncanny affinity for bringing the dead back to life.

To make matters worse, family debt looms – a debt that will have to be paid sooner rather than later if Lanie and her sister are to retain ownership of the ancestral seat, Stones Manor. Lanie finds herself courted and threatened by powerful parties who would love to use her worryingly intimate relationship with the goddess of death for their own nefarious ends. But the goddess has other plans…

Saint Death’s Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney. Releases in April 2022 from Rebellion Publishing. Not only is this cover pretty (artwork by Kate Forrester), but the story sounds amazing. A family of royal assassins? Definitely looking forward to this one!

  1. Any idea if Catriona Ward has connections to the Mojave Desert, too? My curiosity was perked by the desert reference, although I’m more familiar with the Sonoran Desert.

I’m pretty sure she lives in England, but there could be a connection there, I’m not sure. In any case, I’m so curious to see how she handles the setting:-)

  2. I LOVE the sound of Saint Death’s Daughter – and that cover is a joy. But as ever, you’re the cool kid in the book blogging playground with all the best reads, Tammy:)).

LOL well I just waste a lot of time looking through publishers’ catalogs and Instagram, ha ha. Thanks Sarah!
