Indie Horror Book Haul

I follow quite a few horror bookstagrammers and bloggers, and if you are looking for small press and indie horror titles, Instagram in particular is a great place to hang out. Over the past few months, I’ve been tempted by some of the horror community’s recommendations, and I’ve purchased five books that sound really good. I thought I’d share those today for #horrorinjuly!

I wish I had made a note of who recommended each book, but I’m just not that organized, lol.

I don’t remember where I first saw Malignant Summer by Tim Meyer, but I knew I needed to buy it. This is a chonk of a book, clocking in at 625 pages. I was drawn in by the beautiful, creepy cover, and it’s a coming of age horror story that takes place in the 1990s. Published by Silver Shamrock.

I started seeing These Ghosts Bleed by Christy Aldridge all over the place, and I knew I needed to read it at some point. Ooh this sounds good! Click the link to check out the description on Goodreads. Self published.

I do remember seeing a Tweet from Destiny that convinced me to buy Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca (thanks Destiny!) To be honest, I’m a little afraid to read this. But it’s short, and I’m super curious. Published by Weirdpunk Books.

Hailey Piper is pretty well known in the indie horror scene, and I’ve read a few reviews of The Worm and His Kings that made me want to try this. Cosmic horror, which I love, and at just over 100 pages, I’m hoping to read this very soon. Published by Off Limits Press.

Finally, yet another book that I’ve been hearing about every time I turn around, Twisted: Tainted Tales by Janine Pipe is a collection of short stories, and how can you not love the retro 80s VHS style cover? Published by Pipe Screams Press.

Have you read any of these books? Which one should I read first?

  1. I’ve read Twisted Tales (which was fun and full of tropes but, you know, genre-fun) and Malignant Summer (unfortunately it wasn’t for me, but the cover is beautiful and creepy). I want to read Things Have Gotten Worse soon, but I hope you read and review The Worm and His Kings first.

  2. I’ve not delved into the indie scene very often so these are all completely new to me. I hope you enjoy them and look forward to hearing about any you did. I love the cover for Malignant Summer.

Ooh thanks for putting The Worm and His Kings on my radar. I’ve loved the little cosmic horror that I’ve read and want to read more of it. Also small presses woooo! Things Have Gotten Worse is legit horrifying. Good luck.

  4. Only author there I know is Tim Meyer and I have read one of his and it was okay. I do want to try another from him but maybe not a coming of age chunker…lol. Hope you enjoy all of these!

I’ve never heard of any of these either. But like everyone else I hope you like them! Or hate them because they’re so scary. Or… whichever you’d prefer!
