The Friday Face-Off: The Word “Book” in the Title

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A Book with the word “Book” in the title.

In celebration of #horrorinjuly, I’ve picked one of my favorite recent horror books, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. Having just read his latest, The Final Girl Support Group, I have Hendrix on the brain, I guess:-D I was surprised to find five different covers, so let’s take a look!

Quirk Books (U.S.) edition 2020. This is the copy I own, and I think it’s pretty clever. You have the peaches which represent the Southern setting, and the vampire fang marks with blood which represent the vampire. Except for the blood, this cover makes the story feel rather cozy, which it’s not by any means.

Quirk paperback 2021 | Italian edition 2020

German edition 2021 | Polish edition 2021

I like how these covers are all so different. My least favorite is the Italian edition. Although the cupcakes suggest Southern hospitality, and I like the way the artist added blood to one of them, it’s pretty plain overall. The Polish edition is good too, I love the way the woman is giving the finger to the vampire, an idea that really works with this story. But my favorite is the German edition, which combines the best elements from all of these and really works for me:

Which one is your favorite?

  1. In this case I’m sticking with the Quirk Books US edition. I agree it does have a cozy or humorous feel which might not suit the book as well, but I like the cover. πŸ™‚

  2. Oh I didn’t realize the same author wrote both of these! Anyway, I think I like the Quirk edition the best- maybe because I’ve seen it the most- but they’re all wild!

  3. Haha – looks like yourself, Mogsy and I choose the same book this week (I felt convinced someone would go for the Book of Koli so left that even though it was my first choice!).
I do love the cover but I can’t help but feel attached to the original.
