Future Fiction #133 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three awesome cover reveals, take a look:

The sea dragons are returning, and Joron Twiner’s dreams of freedom lie shattered. His Shipwife is gone and all he has left is revenge.

Leading the black fleet from the deck of Tide Child Joron takes every opportunity to strike at his enemies, but he knows his time is limited. His fleet is shrinking and the Keyshan’s Rot is running through his body. He runs from a prophecy that says he and the avian sorcerer, the Windseer, will end the entire world.

But the sea dragons have begun to return, and if you can have one miracle, who is to say that there cannot be another?

The Bone Ship’s Wake (The Tide Child #3) by R.J. Barker. Releases in September from Orbit Books. FINALLY. I’ve been waiting for this cover reveal forever, and it was worth it! This is one of my favorite series and I’m sad it’s ending, but I can’t wait to see how Barker wraps things up!

Malcolm Devlin’s And Then I Woke Up introduces readers to a world reeling from an unusual plague.

And Then I Woke Up introduces readers to a world reeling from an unusual plague. Monsters now lurk in the streets, while terrified survivors arm themselves and roam the countryside in packs. Or perhaps something very different is happening. When a disease affects how reality is perceived, it’s hard to be certain of anything…

Spence is one of the “cured” living at the Ironside rehabilitation facility. Haunted by guilt, he refuses to face the changed world until a new inmate challenges him to help her find her old crew. But if he can’t tell the truth from the lies, how will he know if he has earned the redemption he dreams of? How will he know he hasn’t just made things worse?

And Then I Woke Up by Malcolm Devlin. Releases in April 2022 from Tor.com. Oooh this sounds so good! And that cover is super creepy. A monster plague, sounds like fun:-D

Moving outside the city of Maradaine, this new novel follows a lone member of the Maradaine Constabulary as she navigates a new but just as dangerous city.

Sergeant Corrie Welling–the young constabulary officer from Maradaine–has been abducted and confined on a ship bound for distant shores, where her captors have nefarious plans for her. With fortune and ingenuity, Corrie escapes, but finds herself stuck in a sprawling metropolis on the other side of the world: The Mocassa.

The Mocassa is a test unlike anything Corrie has ever faced. She doesn’t speak the language, doesn’t know the culture, and is forbidden from leaving the city until she pays off a colossal debt. Even if she’s able to find decent work, it will take her years to settle her accounts and get home.

But Corrie Welling will not be cowed. She will work, fight, and hold her chin high. As a fringe faction of an apocalyptic faith spreads throughout the city, threatening the new friends she’s sworn to protect, she’ll continue to stand up for the values instilled in her as a member of the Maradaine Constabulary. Even if, as her darkest day approaches, she has to do it alone.

An Unintended Voyage by Marshall Ryan Maresca. Releases in November 2021 from DAW Books. I have not read any of Maresca’s Maradaine books, I’m sorry to say, but this looks like it might be fine as a stand alone. There are a ton of Maradaine books and a bunch of different series as well, and I always hear good things about them. Don’t you love this cover?

That cover for An Unintended Voyage is gooorgeous! I’ve not ready any of the Maradaine books either, but I have listened to a lot of the World Building for Masochists podcast that Maresca co-hosts and he sounds like a really interesting writer from the things he talks about, so I’d love to make some room for that series one day. I’m sometimes a bit weird about skipping books in an author’s back catalogue or reading standalones from an established world before reading the main series, so I don’t think I’ll be reading An Unintended Voyage any time soon, but maybe in the distant future when I’ve finished all the Maradaine books.

There are SO many Maradaine books, I think it’s way too intimidating to try and catch up. Like there’s at least 15 out there already. I’m going to take my chances and dive into this one:-)

He does release books like a madman like, at a proper alarming rate. Always impressed by authors that are that prolific. Adrian Tchaikovsky is another one; I can’t seem to turn around without him releasing a new book haha. Is the Maradaine series still ongoing as well do you know?

  2. And Then I Woke Up looks super creepy . . . but that’s probably why we like it, right? 😉 Also, The Tide Child series is one I should start at some point, and I hope this third instalment is going to be a blast for you!

I think the RJ Barker series is on an accelerated publishing schedule, that’s why it feels like the second book just came out, lol.

Me too, it’s so creepy and then with the unexpected pink background, it makes for a standout cover:-)

I’m really interested in trying out RMM, I’m hoping this will be a good starting point.

A monster plague *does* sound like fun! And then I work up is definitely going on my TBR!

  4. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never come across any of the Maradaine books, but now I’m intrigued. I definitely need to check her out. And Then I Woke Up may be something to revisit down the road, but I can’t do another plauge.pandemic story right now.
