Future Fiction #132 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, two super exciting sequel cover reveals, and another exciting companion novel reveal, take a look:

Return to The Meridian with New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse’s sequel to the most critically hailed epic fantasy of 2020 Black Sun—finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Lambda, and Locus awards.

There are no tides more treacherous than those of the heart. —Teek saying

The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent.

The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?

As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.

And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?

Welcome back to the fantasy series of the decade in Fevered Star—book two of Between Earth and Sky.

Fevered Star (Between Earth & Sky #2) by Rebecca Roanhorse. Releases in April 2022 from Gallery/Saga Press. I love this cover! The artist is John Picacio, who also did the cover for Black Sun. I’m so excited to get back into this world!

The sequel to A. K. Larkwood’s stunning debut fantasy, The Unspoken NameThe Thousand Eyes continues The Serpent Gates series–perfect for fans of Jenn Lyons, Joe Abercrombie, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

Two years ago, Csorwe and Shuthmili defied the wizard Belthandros Sethennai and stole his gauntlets. The gauntlets have made Shuthmili extraordinarily powerful, but they’re beginning to take a sinister toll on her. She and Csorwe travel to a distant world to discover how to use the gauntlets safely, but when an old enemy arrives on the scene, Shuthmili finds herself torn between clinging to her humanity and embracing eldritch power.

Meanwhile, Tal Charossa returns to Tlaanthothe to find that Sethennai has gone missing. As well as being a wizard of unimaginable power, Sethennai is Tal’s old boss and former lover, and Tal wants nothing to do with him. When a magical catastrophe befalls the city, Tal tries to run rather than face his past, but soon learns that something even worse may lurk in the future. Throughout the worlds of the Echo Maze, fragments of an undead goddess begin to awaken, and not all confrontations can be put off forever…

The Thousand Eyes (The Serpent Gates #2) by A.K. Larkwood. Releases in February 2022 from Tor Books. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this sequel! I believe the release date was pushed several times, but we finally have a date. And a cover! I absolutely loved The Unspoken Name and I’m really excited about this book.

Set in the universe of Rory Thorne, this new standalone sci-fi mystery follows an unlikely duo who must discover the motive behind an unusual murder.

THE TEMPLAR: When Lieutenant Iari hears screams in the night, she expects to interrupt a robbery or break up a fight. Instead she discovers a murder with an impossible suspect: a riev, one of the battle-mecha decommissioned after the end of the last conflict, repurposed for manual labor. Riev don’t kill people. And yet, clearly, one has. Iari sets out to find it.

THE SPY: Officially, Gaer is an ambassador from the vakari. Unofficially, he’s also a spy, sending information back to his government, unfiltered by diplomatic channels. Unlike Iari, Gaer isn’t so sure the riev’s behavior is just a malfunction, since the riev were created using an unstable mixture of alchemy and arithmancy.

As Gaer and Iari search for the truth, they discover that the murderous riev is just a weapon in the hands of a wielder with wider ambitions than homicide–including releasing horrors not seen since the war, that make a rampaging riev seem insignificant…

Nightwatch on the Hinterlands by K. Eason. Releases in October 2021 from DAW Books. I’m a huge fan of Eason’s Rory Thorne books, and I’m so excited for this! It sort of came out of nowhere, since the release date is mere months away, but I’m adding it to my October reading schedule right now.

  1. These are all new to me. I won’t be reading the first two anytime soon, but only because I’ve yet to read the earlier book in each series, both ones I’d like to. The third sounds interesting, too.

    • Tammy

I recommend both series. I sometimes don’t get along with epic fantasy, but I did love these two.

Oh my, I am LOVING the sounds of Night Watch! You have also reminded me I haven’t yet read Rebecca Roanhorse (ack!)

  3. I still need to read the Rory Thorne books… gah! These are all great covers — but since I still haven’t gotten around to Black Sun, I suppose I should tackle that first before getting excited for a sequel.

    • Tammy

Ha ha I miss out on so many fantasy books but I have read Black Sun. It’s so good!

    • Tammy

I started featuring three books a week several years ago. There were just too many I wanted to share:-)

  4. Margo

Black Sun is one of my favorites from 2020 so I’m eagerly awaiting Fevered Star. The cover art by John Picacio is amazing! In the meantime, I’m going to have to read The Unspoken Name, to figure out how excited I am for The Thousand Eyes.

Do you recommend starting with Nightwatch, or do you think I’d be better off starting with the Rory Thorne books?

    • Tammy

I don’t think you have to start with the Rory Thorne books, since the characters are completely different, and I think it’s set in the future.

    • Tammy

I think you can read it as a standalone, it’s a completely different time period and different characters.

  5. I was so disappointed with The Unspoken Name, but the cover for The Thousand Eyes looks so fabulous and I’m super curious about it. xD I might have to give the series another try. I still need to read Rory Thorne, but man, I definitely need to pick up Nightwatch on the Hinterlands, too. It sounds fabulous!

  6. I love the cover of The Thousand Eyes. A new Eason book set in the same multiverse as Rory Thorne?! I will have to add that to my wish list. I still need to read the sequel to the first Rory Thorne book, but I really enjoyed that first one. I hope you enjoy all of these when you read them!

    • Tammy

I loved the Rory Thorne books, and I’m curious to see where she goes with the new one:-)
