Future Fiction #131 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I spotted three cover reveals last week, take a look:

Gallant follows Olivia Prior, a young woman who’s grown up in the Merilance School for girls, clinging to the only link to her past – her mother’s journal. The journal seemingly descends into madness, but when a letter invites Olivia home to Gallant, she goes and is astonished to find no one was expecting her.

The house is full of secrets, including half-formed ghouls that haunt the hallways, and her hostile cousin Matthew. But Olivia is determined to uncover Gallant’s secrets, leading her to stumble upon a ruined wall at precisely the right moment, and discovering a place that is Gallant, but not. Instead of the home she’s grown attached to, it’s a crumbling manor with solid ghouls and a mysterious figure ruling over all. It leads Olivia to uncover secrets about her family history and the origins of her father, but will she assume her duty as a Prior, protecting our world against the Master of the House? Or will she take her place beside him?

#1 New York Times–bestselling author Victoria Schwab weaves a dark and original tale about the place where the world meets its shadow, and the young woman beckoned by both sides. The Secret Garden meets Crimson Peak in this stand-alone novel perfect for readers of Holly Black and Neil Gaiman.

Gallant by Victoria Schwab. Releases in March 2022 from HarperCollins. It’s always nice to see a surprise Victoria Schwab book that seemed to come out of nowhere! Ha ha. I saw this cover reveal and I was like what? This is YA—you can tell because she’s using the name Victoria—and generally I would be a little hesitant about this. But I’m actually looking forward to it, and that cover is killer! (and sorry for the ugly Entertainment Weekly sticker, this was the only image I could find!)

The Bone Shard Emperor is the unmissable sequel to The Bone Shard Daughter, one of the biggest fantasy debuts of 2020 – a captivating tale of magic, revolution and mystery, where a young woman’s sense of identity will make or break an empire.

The Emperor is Dead. Long live the Emperor.

Lin Sukai finally sits on the throne she won at so much cost, but her struggles are only just beginning. Her people don’t trust her. Her political alliances are weak. And in the northeast of the Empire, a rebel army of constructs is gathering, its leader determined to take the throne by force.

Yet an even greater threat is on the horizon, for the Alanga – the powerful magicians of legend – have returned to the Empire. They claim they come in peace, and Lin needs their help to defeat the rebels and restore order.

But can she trust them?

The Bone Shard Emperor (The Drowning Empire #2) by Andrea Stewart. Releases in November 2021 from Orbit Books. I believe this has been officially revealed, at least the author revealed it on Instagram so I think I’m safe:-) I know lots of readers who are excited for the sequel to The Bone Shard Daughter, and I’m one of them:-D

In the vein of Madeline Miller’s Circe comes a bold and sweeping debut that reimagines the life of Kaikeyi, the vilified queen of the Indian epic the Ramayana.

“I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions—much good it did me.”

So begins Kaikeyi’s story, that of a young woman determined to create her own destiny in a world where gods and men dictate the shape of things to come. But as she transforms herself from an overlooked princess into a warrior, diplomat, and most-favored queen, Kaikeyi’s will clashes with the path that has been chosen for her family. And she must decide if her resistance is worth the destruction it will wreak.

Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel. Releases in April 2022 from Redhook. This has got to be one of my favorite cover reveals this year so far, isn’t it gorgeous? I love that this appears to be a retelling of a story from Indian mythology. I can’t wait!

  1. Oh my, what beautiful covers!! I think my favorite is Gallant, and the book seems promising but I am not really a fan of the author, sadly. But the other two books seem intriguing, and a lot! I hope to stard The Boneshard Daughter next, and I really hope to enjoy it!

Oh wow, I know the story of the Ramayana and I never would have picked Kaikeyi as a character to have a retelling like this — which actually has me all the more eager for it!! Wonderful pick, Tammy!!

  3. I’m curious about Kaikeyi. I enjoy stories involving mythology of any kind, and I’m not overly familiar with the Ramayana, other than in name alone.

I’m not familiar either, but I guess this book would be a good place to learn about it:-)

  4. The only Schwab I’ve read is Addie LaRue but I really enjoyed that one so I’m up for more books by her.
The cover of The Bone Shard Emperor is AMAZEBALLS I haven’t read the first one yet but I really need to!
And Kaikeyi is another freaking beautiful cover. I’m always looking for more retellings too and this sounds SO good!

  5. I love the sound of all of these – but it’s got to be Kaikeyi that has seriously snagged my attention. That cover is fabulous and any retelling of the wonderful rich Indian mythology is a must-read for me:))).

  6. I am determined to try something by Schwab before the end of the year. Her books always sound amazing. I really like the cover of Gallant. I want to read Kaikeyi! This is the first I’ve heard of it. It sounds so good! Which reminds me, I still need to read Circe. I hope you enjoy all three of these when you read them, Tammy!

I feel like Gallant came out of nowhere, they announced it and did the cover reveal at the same time:-)

  7. I also like the look of all of these. Can’t wait for the Andrea Stewart book though And that final book Kaikeyi looks wonderful and definitely something that I would like to pick up.

  8. Schwab’s YA is sometime a miss for me, but I do have Gallant on my list to check out depending on reviews! And is that Bone Shard Emperor cover just the placeholder we’ve seen on Goodreads but without the “not final cover” tag, because wow they really got me expecting something a lot different, lol.

  9. More Schwab?! Yes, please! Sounds like it’ll be interesting. I hadn’t heard of it before, but I’m curious about Kaikeyi, too. I don’t know as much about Indian mythology as I should, so it should be a fun experience.
