Over-Booked [139] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

I feel like I’ve really been spoiled these past few weeks, and I’m excited about all of these new books:

Physical review copies:

I really love surprise book mail, and Tor was kind enough to send two exciting books my way: The Starless Crown by James Rollins, who is known for his thrillers, is a fantasy (I think?) that actually sounds really good. I’ve never read Rollins before but I am really looking forward to this. Also from Tor is Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, a book I’ve already featured on the blog. It’s getting some incredible buzz and is being compared to A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and I’m so happy to have a review copy. And I was also sent a surprise finished copy of The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman, which I loved! Huge thanks to Tor!

I’m very happy to have a copy of Ten Low by Stark Holborn, thanks to the team at Titan Books. I have been hearing raves about this science fiction story that is described as “Firefly meet Dune.” This has already been released, but I’ll definitely be reading and reviewing it this month.

And from Angry Robot, another book I’ve been hearing great things about is The Offset by Calder Szewczak. I need to check with the publisher to see which cover is the final version. I’ve seen a couple of different ones, and the one in this photo is just a placeholder, I believe. In any case, I am so excited to read this! Hugs to Angry Robot!

This next item is pretty cool. I entered an Instagram giveaway run by author Nicole Willson, and I won a notebook with the cover of her upcoming book, Tidepool. I am looking forward to reading the book, and this is such a great promotional item. Thank you Nicole!

And big thanks to Tor.com for a Catherynne M. Valente double feature: Comfort Me With Apples and The Past is Red. Both novellas come out later this year, and I can’t wait to read them, especially Comfort Me With Apples😀

And finally, I was very happy to receive this cool chapter sampler of Slewfoot by Brom from Tor Nightfire. It’s got about six or seven of Brom’s gorgeous illustrations plus the first chapter of the book. I’ve read it and it’s made me excited to read the rest! Big thanks to Tor Nightfire!

Digital review copies:

Just two new digital review copies, and not even from NetGalley, so I’m patting myself on the back for being so good, ha ha. Absolute Unit by Nick Kolakowski is a horror novella, and I don’t see a description on Goodreads but here’s what the publisher sent to me:

Absolute Unit is a dark carnival ride through the underside of the American Dream, where hustlers and parasites fight to survive against gun-toting furries, sarcastic drug kingpins, old ladies who are startlingly good with knives, and angry ex-girlfriends. It’s a hardboiled slice of modern American horror that asks the deepest question of all: Is the human race worth saving?

Bill is a nobody, a health inspector who’s not above taking a few dollars to overlook a restaurant’s mouse problem, and hated by nearly everyone except his long-suffering girlfriend. His nephew, Trent, isn’t much better: sexually and morally confused, he’s probably the worst teenage con artist on the East Coast. But today, these two losers are going to become the most important people in the world.

That’s because Bill and Trent harbor a sentient parasite with a sarcastic sense of humor and a ravenous appetite. As the parasite figures out how to control its new human hosts, the focus of its desires grows from delicious cheeseburgers and beer to something much darker and more dangerous.

The apocalypse might come from within us…

I think this sounds like fun! And I also received The Barrens by Joe Goodglass directly from the author. I’m extremely picky with self published books but Joe said some nice things about my blog and well, I’m a sucker for those kind of compliments! This is another horror title and I can’t wait to dive in. Big thanks to Crystal Lake Publishing, Nick Kolakowski, Darkstroke Books and Joe Goodglass:-D

And that’s my haul this week! Does anything look good to you?

  1. I’m really looking forward to Slewfoot. I love both Brom’s artwork and writing, and can’t wait to try this one.

I haven’t read Brom before but the sampler was really good, and I think I’ll enjoy the full book:-)

  2. Ooh, love that notebook of Tidepool! I did a double take at first because I was like, oh that is a strange looking ARC, lol! The publisher has contacted me before with their books, I hope they’ll do it with this one, because I’m so bad with keeping track of new releases these days 😀

Me too, I may contact them soon, because I think it comes out in August, which is getting closer:-)

  3. How many interesting books!! The Blacktongue Thief is a book that I have waiting for me and that I am really curious to start! And I have Light From Uncommon Stars on my TBR too. It seems just so interesting!

Thanks Caroline! I only said that because the cover isn’t on Goodreads anymore, so I was wondering if it had been changed.

  4. I’m jealous of your physical ARC of Starless Crown! The publisher reached out to me and offered a digital copy and I accepted, but would have loved the physical one. I used to be a big fan of James Rollins, he had some that were a little bit science fiction-y like Amazonia and Excavation, which I think were my first books by him? I haven’t read him a lot lately, because my tastes kind of changed a little. But I did meet him once, he’s really nice! I’m looking forward to that one myself. Great books! Hope you enjoy them all and I look forward to your reviews.
