Future Fiction #128 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new cover reveals, take a look!

Orphaned as young women, Celestia and Izara De Malena find themselves land rich but destitute, with only a failing rainforest acreage, Celestia’s perfect manners, and Izara’s nascent magic to their aristocratic names. With the last of their money running out, they enact a dangerous plan—using a spell she doesn’t fully understand, Izara summons the Lady of the Seraphine and demands a favor: a husband for Celestia, one rich enough to enable the De Malena sisters to keep their land. But a favor from the river goddess always comes at a cost . . .

Now, five years later, rumors of war and disease are spreading, Celestia’s husband has been called away on a secret mission for the Emperor, and the Lady of the Seraphine is back to collect her due. Izara will be forced to leave the academy where she has been studying to become a mage; Celestia will be pulled from her now-flourishing farm while newly pregnant with her first child. Together, they must repay their debt to the Lady—embarking on a mission that will put them on a collision course with Celestia’s husband, the Emperor, and a god even more powerful than the Lady of the Seraphine.

Gorgeous, compelling, and utterly captivating, The Beholden follows Celestia and Izara as they journey from the lush rainforest to a frozen desert on an impossible quest to find a god who doesn’t want to be found and prevent the end of the world.

The Beholden by Cassandra Rose Clarke. Releases in November 2021 from Erewhon. First of all, take a look at this glorious cover! I’m a big fan of Clarke, and this sounds different from her other books. But I am definitely checking this out when November comes along. And we don’t have to wait too long:-)

A reluctant warrior goes on the run with an ancient goddess through a lush world full of wild magic, wondrous creatures, and hidden enemies in this beautiful epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds .

In the land of the Strangled Throat, the people suffer under the rule of a despotic Emperor. His sons, the Three Terrors, despoil the countryside and oppress its citizens. When Keema Daware–a fierce warrior who lost his left arm in battle–finds the mythic Empress, who has escaped from her royal imprisonment, at his sentry outpost, he must make a choice: turn her in and evade the wrath of the Three Terrors, or help her overthrow the government and free a nation.

The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. Releases in March 2022 from Del Rey Books. Another gorgeous cover, and wow this sounds good! I’m sad that I missed Jimenez’s last book, The Vanished Birds, I heard lots of good things about it, but I’m not going to miss this one!

A mysterious plague that causes random bouts of violence is sweeping the nation. Now three generations of women must navigate their chilling new reality in this moving exploration of identity, cycles of abuse, and hope.

Chelsea Martin appears to be the perfect housewife: married to her high school sweetheart, the mother of two daughters, keeper of an immaculate home.

But Chelsea’s husband has turned their home into a prison; he has been abusing her for years, cutting off her independence, autonomy, and support. She has nowhere to turn, not even to her narcissistic mother, Patricia, who is more concerned with maintaining the appearance of an ideal family than she is with her daughter’s actual well-being. And Chelsea is worried that her daughters will be trapped just as she is–until a mysterious illness sweeps the nation.

Known as The Violence, this illness causes the infected to experience sudden, explosive bouts of animalistic rage and attack anyone in their path. But for Chelsea, the chaos and confusion the virus causes is an opportunity–and inspires a plan to liberate herself from her abuser.

The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson. Releases in February 2022 from Del Rey Books. I cannot believe I’ve never read one of Dawson’s books. But this sounds great, and I’m definitely adding it to my list!

  1. Great picks as always, Tammy! The Beholden sounds particularly captivating, and I love that the cover looks like a painting 🙂

Oh my, Tammy, these are all just brilliant picks. The cover for The Violence and the blurb just gives me the chills — and I want to read it so much!

  3. All three authors are new to me and I could see myself potentially enjoying each of them. Nice selection.

  4. The synopsis for The Violence reminds me of a trilogy I read a few years ago (first book was called Haters, not sure about the rest), but also dealing with unexplained violence that rips through society. This one sounds good! I definitely want to read the new Simon Jimenez. I loved Vanished Birds!

I love Cassandra Rose Clarke too, and I’m sure she’s going to give us something fantastic:-)

  6. The Violence is definitely going on my TBR and I’m pretty sure I read a book by this author a while ago, but I’m thinking it was urban fantasy , So really pretty covers this week but leave it to me to love the one with just a knife!
