Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
A couple of cool cover reveals this week, take a look:
From the acclaimed author of Spoonbenders comes the gripping tale of a family’s mysterious religion, and the daughter who turns her back on their god.
In 1933, nine-year-old Stella is left in the care of her grandmother, Motty, in the backwoods of Tennessee. These remote hills of the Smoky Mountains are home to dangerous secrets, and soon after she arrives, Stella wanders into a dark cavern where she encounters the family’s personal god, an entity known as Ghostdaddy.Fifteen years later, after a tragic incident had caused her to flee, Stella–now a professional moonshiner and bootlegger–returns for Motty’s funeral, only to discover a mysterious ten-year-old girl named Sunny living on the property. Sunny appears innocent enough, but she is more powerful than Stella could ever imagine–and a direct link to Stella’s buried past and her family’s destructive faith.
Haunting and wholly engrossing, summoning mesmerizing voices and giving shape to the dark, Revelator is a southern gothic tale for the ages.
Revelator by Daryl Gregory. Releases in August from Knopf. I barely even care what this book is about, only that it’s a Daryl Gregory book! BUT saying that, I think this sounds so good. A few key words that grabbed my attention: bootleg, backwoods, southern gothic. Yep, I’m really excited about this one!
As the founder and creative director of a small video game development company, Peter Banuk is responsible for overseeing every project they produce. Two years after their second release crashed and burned, Peter is still reeling from the failure and struggling to get a new virtual reality game off the ground. He desperately needs a win, not only to save his struggling company, but to justify the time he spends away from his wife and daughters.
When his tech-genius partner tells him an experimental VR headset called Deep Dive is ready for beta testing, Peter excitedly agrees to give it a whirl. The trial run goes horribly wrong, rendering Peter unconscious. Upon coming to he discovers that his daughters no longer exist…
Deep Dive by Ron Walters. Releases in January 2022 from Angry Robot. This eye catching cover is hard to ignore, and I think the story sounds really good too. I’m always on the lookout for sci-fi thrillers, and I’m definitely going to check this out!
A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant’s These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense.
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world.
For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that’s exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he’s got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.
The only people who know they exist are Scotland, an overly friendly hermit with murky intentions, and Cooper’s old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn’t show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred—and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. When a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding—or finally face the sins of his past.
Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.
These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant. Releases in October 2021 from Minotaur Books. I know this isn’t my usual genre, but damn this sounds good! There’s something about stories set in the Appalachian Mountains that makes me want to read them, and I’m going to keep this on my radar for sure.
These Silent Woods looked so compelling that I went and requested it right away! And as much as the first one sounds intriguing as well, I can’t take anything with a thing named ‘Ghostdaddy’ seriously
I might head over to NetGalley and request it too, I was trying to resist but I can’t! And yeah, “Ghostdaddy” is funny but I’m curious:-)
I must say, Revelator looks and sounds particularly dark, and I just love that! Yep, I can see why you are excited for it 😀
I’ve been having good luck with darker reads lately, so I hope is works for me:-)
I would LOVE to read Revelator! The cover, the book description . . . awesome!

It is going to be awesome, I just feel it:-)
Revelator sounds fantastic! The words bootleg, backwoods, southern gothic also drew me in. The synopsis of the second book made me go like WHAT. So now I really wanna know what it’s all about. These Silent Woods does sound really poignant like the description says. Great choices this week!

Thanks Stephanie!
These Silent Woods caught my attention too. And I love that cover and how they laid out and colored the text.
The text is very unusual, the way it’s tucked into the background.
And with a fair bit of luck I just won a copy, so I’ll get to see if the story is as good as the cover. 🙂
Love the covers of the first two! Hope you get these soon. My post is in the link below.

These Silent Woods sound both claustrophobic and riveting: the kind of book that chills you to the bone but makes it impossible to put it down… 🙂

Yes, I agree! I’m hesitating requesting it but I’m pretty sure I’ll cave and do it anyway;-)
I spotted Revelator the other day and it caught my eye. Sounds like it could be an interesting read.
I can’t imagine Daryl Gregory writing a bad book;-)
Well Deep Dive sounds bloody excellent. I usually add any future fiction books I’m interested in to my goodreads TBR but it ain’t on there yet so hoping to see people talking about it nearer the release date to remind me!
I’ll try to talk about it and remind you:-)
Hi! Very happy to see people excited for Deep Dive! Here’s the Goodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57637683-deep-dive
The cover is so cool, I’m excited! Thanks for leaving a comment, Caroline:-)
I think those key words from the Daryl Gregory book are really grabbing me as well–although I think that cover is grabbing me the most! These Silent Woods also sounds amazing.
I agree, that Revelator cover is super creepy and good!
The red barn…. totally creepy!!!!
Yes, it’s just so tiny in the middle of that mountain!
All the covers are very atmospheric, Tammy. I agree that there’s something about the Appalachian Mountains that’s mysterious and lends itself to those kinds of books. I’m adding more books to my book list!
Thanks Jan!
These Silent Woods sound really intense and good. I also really like the sound of Revelator. I hope you enjoy all of these when you read them, Tammy! Have a great day!
Thanks Wendy!
After reading Near the Bone, I’m feeling very drawn to another isolated-in-the-mountains story, so These Silent Woods definitely sounds intriguing. And Revelator looks like it’ll be a must-read!
That’s what I was thinking, These Silent Woods really sounds like Near the Bone!
Revelator looks fantastic! That one’s definitely going to go on my TBR. I’m always in the mood for Gothic reads, and this sounds like a good one. Plus, it’s coming out at the perfect time for horror reads!
Yes, it is perfect timing!
I read a book by Kimi Cunningham Grant a few years ago and it was excellent. Fallen Mountain. I think this one sounds good too.

Cool, good to know!
The Daryl Gregory book sounds really good. Thus is the first I’ve heard of it. Definitely adding it to my ever growing TBR list.

I’m just happy to have another Gregory book to read:-)
I saw Revelator over at Mogsy’s and already added it. It sounds so goo and I think I share some of your buzz words. I think These Silent Woods sounds interesting but it’s giving me Near the Bone flashbacks and as you’ll see in tomorrow’s review, I had some issues with that one. Some great picks this week.
LOL I was thinking These Silent Woods sounded a lot like Near the Bone, but it’s probably much better done. I’m so curious to read your review of Near the Bone, mine will be up tomorrow too:-)
These Silent Woods sounds so good. I really want to know what Jake is hiding. I’m also loving that cover with the isolated cabin.
I agree, that cabin in the middle of the mountains is eerie:-)
The cover of the Revelator creeps me out a bit, but I like it anyway. And it sounds like it’ll be a good read. I’ll keep an eye out for that one.
It is creepy but also beautiful…
Gotta love the new Daryl Gregory cover, and that last one looks good, I’ll have to add it!
I don’t read a lot of mystery, but I like the sound of These Silent Woods:-)
Deep Dive definitely looks promising, and wow that cover for These Silent Woods really appeals to me. Plus it sounds like a bit of a harrowing read also !!

I love the cover of These Silent Woods too, so mysterious:-)
I love the sound of Deep Dive, Tammy:)). I’ll keep looking out for it, but hopefully Angry Robot will put the arc out on Netgalley – they often do – and I’ll see if I can get hold of an arc. It sounds intriguingly like Recursion… Thank you for sharing!
I hope so Sarah! They usually do.
Oh Revelator looks really good, another one that’s probably too scary for me but I’m so curious about that premise.
Intrigued by These Silent Woods – will have to keep an eye out for that one.
Lynn 😀
