Over-Booked [136] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

Way too many new books this time, lol. But I’m pretty excited for all of these, take a look:

Physical books for review:

Huge thanks to Tor Books for these first two review copies: first up is The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu, the beginning of a new fantasy series that takes place in Edinburgh. This is a June release so look for a review in a couple of months! And “surprise” book mail is rare these days—it’s something that’s nearly disappeared (at least for me) since Covid—but I was thrilled to receive a lovely surprise finished copy of The Helm of Midnight by Marina Lostetter from Tor. I’m definitely going to try to read it this month!

I was very excited to receive a finished copy of Stormland by John Shirley from Blackstone Publishing. This was a Future Fiction pick a while back, about a city caught in the middle of constant storms. I hope to read this soon, as it’s release date is next week. Thank you Blackstone!

And huge thanks to Angry Robot for this copy of The Alien Stars and Other Novellas by Tim Pratt! I absolutely loved Pratt’s Doors of Sleep earlier in the year, and I’m dying to read more of his work. Apparently, these novellas are set in Pratt’s Axiom world, which I have not read, so hopefully they will make sense.

Big thanks to Quirk Books for this unexpected finished copy of Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O’Neal. I have this on my plate to read later in the month and I’m looking forward to it!

Finally, I was surprised to win a Twitter giveaway for a copy of Mina and the Undead by Amy McCaw! I read a digital ARC but this print copy is so pretty and I’m happy to have it. I didn’t love this book, although there were some good elements, but you can find out more when I post my review on Monday. Thank you to UCLan Publishing for the copy!

Digital books for review:

I’ve been stalking NetGalley and waiting for Rovers by Richard Lange to pop up, and it finally did! I’m pretty excited to read this “hard boiled” vampire story. OK the blurb doesn’t actually use the word “vampire” but I’m pretty sure that’s what the characters are:-)

I was also excited to see Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo on NetGalley. I feature this on a Future Fiction post, and it sounds like it’s going to be really good.

I’ve actually preordered the Subterranean Press special edition of The Return of the Sorceress by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to read an eARC of it as well. Isn’t that cover pretty?

From Orbit I got an invite to download The First Omega by Megan E. O’Keefe. This is a novella and even though it’s already out, I’m going to try to squeeze it in this month.

And from Tor, I was invited to read In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu, another novella that sounds very unusual but good. I’m looking forward to this, plus that cover is hard to resist!

Last year I missed The Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso, and Orbit’s giving us a chance to catch up, since the sequel, The Quicksilver Court, comes out this November. I’d love to catch up before then:-D

I’m pretty picky about accepting anthologies these days, but I’m a big fan of Ellen Datlow and this horror anthology from Tachyon sounds great! Body Shocks has a bunch of high profile horror authors attached to it, but it’s not clear whether these are reprints or original stories.

Big thanks to Mulholland Books, Tor.com, Subterranean Press, Orbit Books, and Tachyon Publications!

And that’s my latest book haul! Let me know if you plan to read any of these:-D

  1. I’m interested in the J. Shirley one, for sure. I am glad its release date is soon! Looking forward to your thoughts on some of these others, like the Pratt. Thanks for sharing

I haven’t read a John Shirley book in a long time, and I’m really looking forward to this one:-)

  2. Laurie Harris

Great haul there! I’ve read the Obsidian Tower and loved it. Can’t wait for the sequel

  3. What’s not to like here?!?! I think I’m most curious about The Library of the Dead, The Return of the Sorceress, and In the Watchful City.
