The Friday Face-Off: Cartoonish or Graphic

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: Cartoonish or Graphic.

I decided to go for a “head to head” Face-Off today, since I found the perfect book but there are only two covers. Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark was one of my outstanding reads last year, and I’m actually surprised there aren’t more editions to share with you. Oddly enough, one cover is “graphic” and one is “cartoonish,” although I didn’t plan it that way, lol.

U.S. Tor.com edition, 2020. This cover is a pure graphic delight! It’s so simple and perfectly fits the story, and I honestly can’t imagine a better cover. This is my favorite!

Catalan/Valencian edition 2021. And here is the “cartoonish” cover, which I actually like quite a bit. I wish they’d used a different font for the book title, it would have improved the cover, but otherwise it does a good job of fitting the story.

Have you read Ring Shout? Do you have a favorite cover?

  1. It’s those teeth ringing the eye-holes… How creepy is that?? So that one has to be my favourite, as I want to know exactly what is going on:))

  2. I prefer the Tor cover too. I actually didn’t realize those were mouths on it. This whole time I thought they were just eye holes.
