Over-Booked [135] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

I’m pretty excited about today’s book haul, both physical and digital!

Physical books for review:

I requested Getaway by Zoje Stage on a whim, because I loved her last book, and I was surprised when the publicist sent a copy within a few days. You may recognize this because I just featured it on Future Fiction, it’s a mystery/thriller that takes place in the Grand Canyon. Huge thanks to Mulholland Books for the copy:-D

I’m also very grateful and excited to receive this copy of Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Chapman. This is one of my top “must reads” for April, and it’s coming up very soon on the pile. Thanks to Quirk Books!

Gallery/Saga Press surprised me with a copy of Among Thieves by M.J. Kuhn. I’ve seen this book around social media but I hadn’t really paid much attention to it. Now I’m looking forward to reading it, especially because the publisher is calling it a “high stakes heist novel.” Thank you Saga:-D

Next, a lovely trio of books from Orbit, all high on my list to read. First, the book I’m most excited for is Eye of the Sh*t Storm by Jackson Ford, the third book in his Frost Files series, which I love. This is an April release and I’ll be reading it very soon. Then I received The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri, which is the start of a new series. I love the sound of this! Finally, Orbit sent a copy of For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten, which sounds so good! The publisher is comparing it to Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale, and I believe it’s a Little Red Riding Hood retelling. Huge thanks to Orbit for the review copies!

This surprise from Redhook arrived, The World Gives Way by Marissa Levien. This is a dystopian with a Station Eleven comparison, so you know I’m all over that! Thank you Redhook!

I occasionally enter Instagram giveaways, and I was lucky enough to win one a couple of weeks ago. Big thanks to Subterranean Press for this gorgeous ARC of Alias Space and Other Stories by Kelly Robson! I buy a lot of Sub Press books, and they are meticulous with their packaging so that nothing is dinged or damaged during shipping. I was surprised to see that same level of care taken with this ARC!

Last but certainly not least, I’m thrilled to have an ARC of A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. This is the start of a new series and it sounds so quirky! Huge thanks to Tor.com for the review copy:-)

Digital books for review:

I had to grab The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward when it popped up on NetGalley. It’s already out in the UK and I’ve been seeing some glowing reviews already. I can’t wait for the release date to get a little closer!

I was thrilled to be approved for Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s next book, Velvet Was the Night. This is a noir set in Mexico City in the 1970s, and I think it sounds fabulous!

I was offered a NetGalley widget for Adrift by W. Michael Gear, the fifth book in his Donovan series. I love these books so much, I cannot wait to dive in.

And how about another Gear book? What are the odds I’d have two different books from a married couple, both from the same publisher? LOL. From the wife of W. Michael Gear, Kathleen O’Neal Gear’s upcoming book is The Ice Lion, and boy this book sounds crazy! Well, crazy good actually:-D

The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison is technically a sequel to The Goblin Emperor, but it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read The Goblin Emperor but I decided to try this anyway.

Before He Wakes by Mark Allan Gunnells is an upcoming release from Crystal Lake Publishing, a small publisher that I really like. This sounds good, although I can’t link it up because it’s not on Goodreads yet.

We Have Always Been Here by Lena Nguyen. This is a sci-fi thriller that sounds SO good. I’m all about sci-fi thrillers right now and I’m looking forward to reading this.

Moon Lake by Joe R. Lansdale. This was a complete cover grab on NetGalley, lol. Hey, it happens to the best of us. The cover screamed “download me!” and then I read the blurb and it was basically a done deal at that point. Plus, it’s been years since I’ve read a Lansdale book!

Big thanks to Tor Nightfire, Del Rey Books, DAW Books, Tor Books, Crystal Lake Publishing, and Mulholland Books:-D

And that’s my haul! Let me know if you plan to read any of these books too:-D

Oh my gosh, so jealous! I can’t wait to start Needless Street, but I have so many books to read first!

  1. I’m most curious about Getaway and A Psalm for the Wild-Built, but there are probably several others here I’d try.

  2. Oh wow, look at that physical haul! Plenty of books that you know I’m super excited for, too (*cough*Jackson Ford, definitely looking at you). For the Wolf sounds like it’s going to be pretty great, too. I’ve also got The Ice Lion, though I somehow didn’t realize the author was W. Michael Gear’s wife? Just goes to show how well I pay attention to things!

I love that a husband/wife team write their own books, although I think they might write together sometimes:-)

  3. The new Zoje Stage I bet is gonna be a trip. New Becky Chambers is always good, and yes to sci fi thrillers- I’m all about those too at the moment.

  4. Looks like some great ones! I am a little curious about For the Wolf as I seen it while looking for anticipated reads for the 2Q and it sounds kind of cool. 🙂

  5. We got a lot of the same books, and I also had For the Wolf turn up earlier this week which probably will make it onto my next update. I have been trying to resist requesting from NetGalley, but might have to pulled the trigger on The Last House on Needless Street and We Have Always Been Here at some point 🙂

  6. I’m really looking forward to The Jasmine Throne, plan to get started on it really soon.
I’m really curious how you like Witness for the Dead without having read Goblin Emperor. I know the story is a spin-off but wonder how much it relies on having context. GE had some really hard-to-follow names for instance, so I’m curious if those will be less confusing now with the PoV switch.

Wow, you definitely are over-booked. It’s… a lot. How long do you think it’ll take you to read all these?

I’m excited about so many of these, but think I’m anticipating For the Wolf the most. I hope you like it! But then I hope you like them all!

  8. Well this list has me drooling with envy – and it’s not a good look! Where do I start?? A Psalm for the Wild-Built… We Have Always Been Here… Velvet Was the Night… all books I would LOVE to read! Thank you for sharing the list while I plot how to get hold of these:)).
