Future Fiction #117 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Check out three new August/September releases:

A cinematic and terrifying new novel from “the master of the psychological thriller” and the bestselling author of Baby Teeth and Wonderland, about three friends who hike into the wilds of the Grand Canyon—only to find it’s not so easy to leave the world behind (Entertainment Weekly).

It was supposed to be the perfect week away . . .

Imogen and Beck, two sisters who couldn’t be more different, have been friends with Tilda since high school. Once inseparable, over two decades the women have grown apart. But after Imogen survives a traumatic attack, Beck suggests they all reunite to hike deep into the Grand Canyon’s backcountry. A week away, secluded in nature . . . surely it’s just what they need.

But as the terrain grows tougher, tensions from their shared past bubble up. And when supplies begin to disappear, it becomes clear secrets aren’t the only thing they’re being stalked by. As friendship and survival collide with an unspeakable evil, Getaway becomes another riveting thriller from a growing master of suspense and “a literary horror writer on the rise” (BookPage).

Getaway by Zoje Stage. Releases in August 2021 from Mulholland Books. I really enjoyed Wonderland by Stage last year, and I’m so excited to her next book. I’m intrigued by the Grand Canyon setting, and I just love this cover!

The dead of Loraille do not rest.

Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past.

When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.

As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson. Releases in September 2021 from Margaret K. McElderry Books. I know Rogerson has a lot of fans, and although I never got around to reading Sorcery of Thorns, I really enjoyed An Enchantment of Ravens. This sounds good, and I love this cover!

J.S. Kelley weaves epic fantasy and hardboiled noir in this fast-paced, twisting tale of magic, mystery, and a whole lot of unruly behavior.

In a kingdom where magic fuels everything from street lamps to horseless carriages, the mage guilds of Penador wield power equal to the king himself. So when Lord Edmund’s infant son is kidnapped by the ruthless Alath Guild, he turns to the one person who’s feared by even the most magically adept: Rosalind Featherstone, a.k.a. the Gutter Mage.

But as Roz delves into the circumstances behind the child’s disappearance, she uncovers an old enemy from her traumatic past and a long-brewing plot that could lead to the death of countless innocents, as well as the complete collapse of Penadorian society itself!

Gutter Mage by J.S. Kelley. Releases in September 2021 from Gallery/Saga Press. I believe this is a debut, and I think it sounds like fun. Plus extra points for a really well done cover!

You have me beat, I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon and I’m only a few states away, lol.

  1. I’m also intrigued by the Grand Canyon setting of Getway. I’ve never hiked into it, but it’s an amazing site to see in person even just from up top, and I can only imagine some of the narrative possiblities.. The description of Vespertine reminds me of some old D&D campaigns we went through. It’s always fun revisiting those days.

I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon and I may not want to go after reading this book, lol.

  2. When I read “A week away, secluded in nature…” my mind instantly went like, what could go wrong But I’m also intrigued by the Grand Canyon setting! With Margaret Rogerson it’s the other way around with me. I’ve read Sorcery of Thorns (and it’s one of my favorite books now!) but haven’t gotten around to An Enchantment of Ravens. And Gutter Mage sounds good too. I love the idea of magic fueling everything in the kingdom there. Sounds fascinating!

  3. I don’t know how you manage to find three great books every week. I definitely want the Rogerson book – quite eagerly – given how much I enjoyed Sorcery of Thorns.
