Over-Booked [132] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

Rather than go six weeks between book haul posts, I thought I’d try to post them every 2-3 weeks, like I used to do. The last two weeks have been pretty awesome for book mail, I have to say! I got a couple of my most highly anticipated titles of 2021 and I’m pretty darn excited. Plus NetGalley, well I don’t know what happened. It sort of exploded in my face, lol. I had a couple of requests approved that I put in a few months ago, and they just popped up. Plus damn Tor and Tor.com, they are so hard to resist:-D I’ve also taken on a few new indie/small press horror titles because I am terrible at saying no, ha ha. Here’s a look at my latest new books:

Physical books for review:

Starting off with the amazing Stephen Graham Jones’s next book: My Heart is a Chainsaw. I did some happy dancing when this package arrived! Biggest thanks and hugs to Gallery/Saga Press!

And I was so happy to get a physical copy of The Album of Dr. Moreau as well. Daryl Gregory is one of those writers who keeps reinventing himself with every new book, and if you haven’t tried him yet, you really should. Huge thanks to Tor.com for the copy:-)

And The Light of the Midnight Stars by Rena Rossner was a wonderful surprise, thanks to Redhook! Rossner combines fantasy and Jewish folklore in her second novel, after The Sisters of the Winter Wood.

Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O’Neal is a YA coming out from Quirk Books in April. It sounds fantastic: from what I can gather, the author uses being a werewolf as a metaphor for chronic illness. It sounds both emotional and humorous. Thank you Quirk!

I’ve already reviewed This is Not the Jess Show by Anna Carey, which just came out this past week. Quirk was kind enough to send me a lovely finished copy:-D

Wings of Fury by Emily R. King was a surprise arrival, thanks to Wunderkind PR. This looks like a YA Greek mythology inspired fantasy, and I’m very curious about it. Thank you to Wunderkind and 47North!

I was thrilled when Titan Books contacted me about the rerelease of Aliya Whiteley’s The Loosening Skin, which I’ve already read and loved. Titan has repackaged it with a lovely new cover, and this edition comes out on February 23rd. I’ll be doing an interview with Whiteley close to that date, so stay tuned!

Finally, Tor Books was kind enough to send me a finished copy of The Best of R.A. Lafferty, which has just been published. I’ve started reading these unusual stories, and I hope to have a review up soon. Thank you Tor!

Digital books for review:

Starting off with a couple of exciting titles: Titan Song by Dan Stout is book #3 in his Carter Archives series. I just love Stout’s world and characters, and I’m pretty excited about this one.

Near the Bone by Christina Henry. I’m a big Henry fan, and even though I wasn’t blown away by her last book, I would never not read one of her books! This one sounds pretty scary.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. You guys, I’m so excited for this book! And the reviews so far look pretty good.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. This will be my first Becky Chambers, can you believe it? Ha ha. I’m starting small, with a novella.

The Helm of Midnight by Marina J. Lostetter. The reason I grabbed this was that I saw Petrik’s rave review and just had to have it. But now I’m looking on Goodreads and seeing quite a few three star reviews, so I’m a little hesitant. Petrik, you’d better be right! Ha ha.

A Dragonbird in the Fern by Laura Rueckert. A publicist pitched this to me, and I think I’ve already highlighted this here on the blog during Wyrd and Wonder, so I quickly agreed to read it. Goodreads is literally plastered with five star reviews for this book, which sounds promising!

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. My NetGalley request for this hung out for several months and it was just approved. I’m glad because I do love historical thrillers, and this has a dual timeline that sounds really interesting.

Mina and the Undead by Amy McCaw. I think this sounds like a lot of fun! A YA that takes place in New Orleans and revolves around creepy houses and vampires. I think.

Megacroc by Julian Michael Carver. The author offered me a copy and I just couldn’t say no, it’s been a long time since I’ve read a good creature feature:-)

Wasatch Witches. This is interesting. I was pitched this anthology, a collection of Utah horror, which includes poems, short stories and novelettes. It seems like a pretty professional project, and the editors are currently running a Kickstarter for it, I believe.

Big thanks to: DAW Books, Berkley Books, Tor Books, Tor.com, Flux, Park Row, UCLAN Publishing, Julian Michael Carver and Caryn from the Utah Horror Writers.

Let me know if you plan to read any of these books:-D

I’m looking forward to Megacroc! It’s just an awesome subgenre that I don’t read enough of:-)

Me too, luckily they are sort of spread out so I’ll have a better chance of getting to all of them.

I know, it’s a pretty trippy cover. I need to compile a group of covers that have weird stuff happening to people’s faces, there’s a lot of them…

  1. I got a copy of Lycanthropy and Other Illnesses this week too. I had a digital arc of it, but reached out and asked for a physical copy. Can’t wait on that one! I wish I was reading more of the monster type books like Mega Croc, it looks exactly like the type of book I used to love. Enjoy all these great books you got!

“Exploded in my face” is a good way to describe how NetGalley normally functions for me. xD I have no restraint, as it turns out. Looks like you’ve got some fabulous books this month! I’m especially looking forward to Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses myself! I actually just bought the first book in Dan Stout’s series, and while I know I’m a few books behind, I’m really looking forward to starting that, too! Hope you enjoy your books this month. 🙂
