The Friday Face-Off: Romance

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A book with a romance you enjoyed.

This week I’m featuring a book that didn’t really work for me, although lots of readers loved it. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone was a very odd story, and most readers loved it for the unconventional romance between the two main characters, which I can’t deny worked for me as well. I found four covers, take a look:

Saga Press 2019 edition. This is the default cover, which I do love. The pixelated birds represent the two characters, and the fractured images show that this is a book about time travel. I have to admit I’m not crazy about the title font, and the fact that’s it’s black ruins it for me a little.

Illumicrate Special Edition 2020. I find this cover pretty bland, which is weird since this was a special edition for a book box. I do like that the font is white, but it’s still the same boring font as the first cover.

Portuguese edition 2021. This takes the same idea as the Saga Press edition but the title font is much more interesting, at least to me. I think the white font stands out better, and the placement over the bird images is all around a better design.

Spanish edition 2020. This is my favorite, and maybe because it’s so different from the other covers. I love everything about it: the font treatment, the white bird in the center, and the background of vines and flowers.

Which cover do you like best?

  1. As much as I love birds none of these covers really move me. I’m curious about the story but have been very unsure whether it would work for me. Some folks seem to love it, others not so much. I guess the only way to tell will be to try it. πŸ™‚

  2. Well that last one put the cat among the pigeons! Or rather, the bird among the berries… I loved this intriguing read – and when I saw the familiar cover come up, I was all set to make it my favourite. And then you presented me with the Spanish cover! And that’s the one I’m going for. Thank you, Tammy – a fascinating choice for this week’s subject:))
