Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D
I hope everyone had a fun and safe New Year’s! Welcome to the first Buffy’s Corner of 2021! If you’re new to the blog, this is my weekly wrap-up/looking ahead post where I talk about what books I’m reading. I was able to get ahead a little, for once, although I doubt that will last. I’ve already read three January releases, and I’ll be posting reviews soon:-)
Upcoming reviews:
In the Garden of Spite was really good! It’s a historical thriller about a real life female serial killer that takes place in Norway and the U.S. Camilla Bruce is so talented! Look for my review tomorrow.
I also finished The Effort by Claire Holroyde. I enjoyed this, although it was nothing like I thought it was going to be. The Effort starts as a race to save the planet from a deadly comet, but ends up as a post-apocalyptic story. I’m still gathering my thoughts about this book, so look for my review on Thursday.
And I finished the very short Across the Green Grass Fields, Seanan McGuire’s sixth Wayward Children book. I’ll admit I was a little disappointed in this one. It honestly didn’t do much for me, and I felt it lacked the usual emotional punch that McGuire is known for. However, there are all sorts of rave reviews on Goodreads, so maybe it was me? I may get this review up on Saturday, or I might wait until next week. We shall see…
Upcoming reads:
I just started Doors of Sleep, and so far I’m enjoying this one! After that I will most likely pick up Hall of Smoke, and I’m hearing really good buzz so far for this book. I have one more January novella which I’ll try to sneak in, Remote Control. Most of my January review books are coming out on the 12th and the 19th, which makes it hard to figure out which to read first, lol. But I figure I’m off to a good start and it’s only three days into the month, so hopefully I’ll have time to read everything.
The usual memes…
On Tuesday, I’m kicking off my 2021 Quarterly Most Anticipated Books with the first quarter of the year, which includes books releasing in January, February and March, don’t miss it! Wednesday is a fresh start for Future Fiction, with three new releases to share. And the Friday Face Off is “Moon” in the title, and I have plenty of choices for that.
In case you missed…
My posts last week:
The Friday Face-Off: Dressed in White

Regrets – Books I Meant to Read in 2020
I look forward to your week of reviews! And I hope you like Doors of Sleep! Beware the end, though: it’s a bit… abrupt? And I love that photo from your husband at the end! Amazing!
Thanks Will! And I will watch out for that ending, ha ha.
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on The Garden of Spite.
Wishing you a great reading week, and a happy new year
Thank you Shelleyrae, you too:-)
Bummer. Across the Green Grass Fields sounds like the last book. It didn’t add much either. I will still drop everything and read it when it arrives, though. LOL.
It is an uneven series, at least for me. I tend to like the darker stories, and this one was just sort of cute? With not much danger or high stakes, so it was just OK for me.
My curiosity for The Effort just increased as I read about your surprise in discovering a different book from what you expected: looking forward to the review!
And what a magnificent sunset picture, with those flying birds against the clouds… 🙂

I like surprises too, lol. And thank you! I do love this photo as well:-)
That’s a gorgeous photo. Love the colors in it. Was that taken at sunset?
Yes, it’s a sunset photo. It’s so pretty right? And I don’t think there are any filters. We are lucky to have awesome sunsets here lately.
I’m curious about The Effort. I’ve read at least a couple books about a comet/asteroid hitting the planet and the after effects, but I suspect there’s lots more potential to that general storyline. And what a photo from Moses. Looks like relatively low light and yet all the birds look pretty sharp. Very nice!
I love that photo too. I know he lit the tree, but he’s got such good lenses, it doesn’t surprise me that the birds are sharp even in that light.
Last year I really struggled with writing reviews. I have a ton to get written. Resolution this year? I will get them written! Looking forward to yours:)

Good luck, Laura!
I too think I am coming to the end of my being ahead. I will likely finish 2 books today which are for this week and then I’ll have the reviews to write. Happy New Year!

Those pesky reviews, lol. They sneak up on you:-)
We had a safe New Year celebration Tammy thank you!. Have a great week.
I’m so glad to hear that, Sophie, you too:-)
There’s going to be a lot of great reads coming up soon!
I agree! January is always a good book month:-)
Looking forward to your reviews! I should be starting In the Garden of Spite this coming week!
Oooh enjoy, Lisa!
I am sorry Across the Green Grass Fields wasn’t better. I hope to read that series at some point. There’s always bound to be a book in the series that doesn’t quite live up to the others. Hopefully the next one will be better. I am excited that you enjoyed In the Garden of Spite. I am eager to read that one. I hope you are enjoying your current reads!
Have a great week, Tammy!
I hope you enjoy In the Garden of Spite!
I’m about to finish The Effort – definitely not what I expected either! I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I wasn’t enjoying it all that much in the first half, but I liked it more and more as I got used to the “idea” of the book.
I ended up giving The Effort four stars, but I was waffling between 3 1/2 and 4.
Curious to see your thoughts on Remote Control, I like Okorafor but I’m not entirely sold on this book yet.
The Top Ten Tuesday prompts this month are so good, I usually pick 1-2 per month to do, but I’m planning to do them all in January
I agree, I’m doing at least three of the TTT prompts too:-)
Yay for being ahead. I was ahead for a day or two but that’s already over, lol. Sorry to hear the sixth Wayward Children book was disappointing. I still need to start that series.
Ha ha, by next week I won’t be ahead anymore either.
I hate to hear that about the McGuire book. I so look forward to this series release each January. I heard this was the last one but then I also heard it contains all new characters so have you heard either way if this is the end or the beginning of a new cycle? Beneath the Sugar Sky fell short for me and everyone loved it so I understand how you feel.
Looking forward to your reviews. Don’t feel too bad about the McGuire book–I feel like that series structure allows for some to be great and others to be so-so, almost like a collection of short stories. Probably not going to love them all. Hope you’re having a wonderful week, Tammy!
Hall of Smoke sounds and looks good – I’ll be keen to see what you think of that one.
Lynn 😀
The picture is amazing!! And I am sorry that the last Wayward Children books disappointed you a bit, I have read only three of the books (and the last one wasn’t the best for me) but I am curious to read the sequels!
