Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
A trio of exciting new books and all the covers are excellent!
Daryl Gregory’s The Album of Dr. Moreau combines the science fiction premise of the famous novel by H. G. Wells with the panache of a classic murder mystery and the spectacle of a beloved boy band.
It’s 2001, and the WyldBoyZ are the world’s hottest boy band, and definitely the world’s only genetically engineered human-animal hybrid vocal group. When their producer, Dr. M, is found murdered in his hotel room, the “boyz” become the prime suspects. Was it Bobby the ocelot (“the cute one”), Matt the megabat (“the funny one”), Tim the Pangolin (“the shy one”), Devin the bonobo (“the romantic one”), or Tusk the elephant (“the smart one”)?
Las Vegas Detective Luce Delgado has only twenty-four hours to solve a case that goes all the way back to the secret science barge where the WyldBoyZ’ journey first began—a place they used to call home.
The Album of Dr. Moreau by Daryl Gregory. Releases in May 2021 from Tor.com. By the time this book comes out, it will have been four years since Gregory published Spoonbenders, and folks, that is WAY too long for me to wait between his books. I’m unbelievably excited about his take on The Island of Dr. Moreau with a current setting, and it’s a murder mystery involving a genetically engineered animal-human hybrid boy band?? OMG.
A triumphant, genre-bending breakout novel from one of the boldest new voices in contemporary fiction
Vern – seven months pregnant and desperate to escape the strict religious compound where she was raised – flees for the shelter of the woods. There, she gives birth to twins, and plans to raise them far from the influence of the outside world.
But even in the forest, Vern is a hunted woman. Forced to fight back against the community that refuses to let her go, she unleashes incredible brutality far beyond what a person should be capable of, her body wracked by inexplicable and uncanny changes.
To understand her metamorphosis and to protect her small family, Vern has to face the past, and more troublingly, the future – outside the woods. Finding the truth will mean uncovering the secrets of the compound she fled but also the violent history in America that produced it.
Rivers Solomon’s Sorrowland is a genre-bending work of Gothic fiction. Here, monsters aren’t just individuals, but entire nations. It is a searing, seminal book that marks the arrival of a bold, unignorable voice in American fiction.
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. Releases in May 2021 from MCD. I really loved Solomon’s last book, The Deep, and I’m here for everything they write! This sounds really good, and the cover is gorgeous, isn’t it?
TO BE BORN OF THE FOREST IS A GIFT AND A CURSE.
Rora is a shifter, as magical as all those born in the wilderness–and as feared. She uses her abilities to spy for the king, traveling under different guises and listening for signs of trouble. When a magical illness surfaces across the kingdom, Rora uncovers a devastating truth: Finley, the young prince and her best friend, has caught it, too. His only hope is stardust, the rarest of magical elements, found deep in the wilderness where Rora grew up–and to which she swore never to return.
But for her only friend, Rora will face her past and brave the dark, magical wood, journeying with her brother and the obstinate, older prince who insists on coming. Together, they must survive sentient forests and creatures unknown, battling an ever-changing landscape while escaping human pursuers who want them dead. With illness gripping the kingdom and war on the horizon, Finley’s is not the only life that hangs in the balance.
Forestborn by Elayne Audrey Becker. Releases in August 2021 from Tor Teen. I’ve been leery of most YA fantasy lately, but I have to admit this sounds right up my alley. Plus that cover is really hard to ignore!
Sorrowland sounds so very intriguing, and I LOVE the cover: I would buy the book on its strength alone! 😉
Me too! Just love the cover:-)
The Album of Dr. Moreau brought to mind the Japanese rock band, Man with a Mission, who always wear wolf costumes. It had me imagining them as actual wolf hybrids. Could be interesting.
Interesting. I can see how it would remind you of that band.
They all sound great, but I have to say that The Album of Dr. Moreu is the one really calling to me!!
Yes me too! Can’t wait:-)
The Album of Dr. Moreau sounds so weird it might be interesting, but I’ll wait for a few reviews. Sorrowland sounds fantastic, though. Great picks.
Daryl Gregory is one of my all time favorite authors so I’m pretty sure The Album of Dr. Moreau will be weird, but also really good:-)
Yes, Sorrowland sounds like it will be awesome.
I agree, I’d love to see that book on my shelf:-)
The Album of Dr. Moreau will be a must read for me! (Especially since I read The Island of Dr. Moreau this past year…). I really want to read Sorrowland too. Great choices!
Thanks Lisa, so many good books coming out!
The covers on the last two are so beautiful! The first book sounds intriguing! I love reimaginings like that! Thanks for sharing, and also visiting my Wednesday post!
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature) recently posted…Cover Reveal: Lovebug (Natural History #2) by Erin Mallon
I’m so curious to see how he handles that reimagining:-)
Oh my god, that cover for Sorrowland is stunning–and it sounds great! I’ve also been really intrigued by Forestborn.
I love the Sorrowland cover too, so mysterious…
Sorrowland has such a beautiful cover Tammy!
Isn’t is gorgeous??
I love the sound of all three of these. I am not sure which one I want to read more. I hope you enjoy them when you read them, Tammy. Take care.
Thanks, they do all sound good, we’re all in trouble next year because our TBRs are getting longer!
I recall Spoonbenders with great affection – so The Album of Dr Moreau is the one that has caught my attention. Thank you so much for sharing these:)).
I may need to do a Spoonbenders reread, I also feel affection when I think of it:-)
The Album of Dr. Moreau sounds seriously insane but I sure do love it when an author can make something truly unique. I’ve only ever read Raising Stony Mayhall by that author… need to pick up more of his stuff!
I have a lot of his backlist to read still, including Raising Stony Mayhall, but his books are all pretty different from each other, so I’m really excited to read this one!
I saw the cover to The Album of Dr. Moreau this week as well! I’m really happy Gregory’s got a new book out, I was just thinking it’s been a while…4 years, wow!
I wish it were a full length novel, a novella just isn’t going to be long enough for me:-/
The Album of Dr. Moreau sounds wild.
Sorrowland’s cover is BEAUTIFUL!
I agree, that cover for Sorrowland makes me want to run out and buy a copy:-)
The covers for Sorrowland and Forestborn are so gorgeous!
Oh my gosh, how utterly cool is Dr Moreau? I love it!! You d find the best, unusual picks!
Dr Moreau and Daryl Gregory, wow, that sounds like a winning combination indeed.
I might buy Sorrowland and Forestborn just for the covers haha! It looks like they’re going to be good reads too. 🙂
