This will probably be my last book haul post of 2020, isn’t that strange to say? Who would have thought we’d even make it to the end of this year, right? But here we are. I’m so excited to have received all these 2021 releases, and I can already tell that next year is going to be a lot of fun. Here are my latest books:
Physical books for review:
I just reviewed Escape Pod this past week, check out my review if you missed it. I loved this science fiction anthology, put together by the folks over at the Escape Pod podcast. Big thanks to Titan Books for the review copy!
Thank you to Kaye Publicity who sent me an invite to read The Package by German bestselling author Sebastian Fitzek. This edition comes out in February and I’m very curious about it!
I’m very happy to have a copy of Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell. The publisher is calling it “Ancillary Justice meets Red, White & Royal Blue” and I’m ready to find out if that fits the story! Huge thanks to Tor Books!
Huge thanks to author Claire Holroyde for contacting me after she saw her book on my 14 Adult Science Fiction Books to Read in 2021. Claire offered to send me an ARC of The Effort, and I couldn’t be more excited! If you look closely you can see the beautiful bookmark she made to match the book:-D
And I was very happy to receive a surprise copy of Sylvain Neuvel’s upcoming series starter A History of What Comes Next. I enjoyed his Themis Files and I’m curious to see what he does next. Thank you Tor.com:-D
Digital books for review:
I stumbled upon The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers just yesterday on NetGalley, and Sayers is an auto-read author for me, so of course I downloaded it! I can hardly wait to crack this open:-D
I loved Sue Burke’s Semiosis, and I was happy to see Immunity Index, her next book, available on NetGalley as well. It might seem like it hits a little too close to home right now, but maybe by next May I’ll be ready to tackle it:-)
I just featured Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill on a Future Fiction post, so I was very excited when my request was approved. I’m really looking forward to this story that seems to be set in the same world as Cargill’s Sea of Rust.
I was happy and surprised to get a super fast approval on NetGalley for Aliya Whiteley’s Skyward Inn! I never miss one of her books, and this sounds really interesting. It’s hard to tell from the blurb just what this story is about, but I’m going to find out and I’ll let you know!
Amid the Crowd of Stars by Stephen Leigh sounds amazing. It takes place on another planet and asks ethical questions about exposing and being exposed to alien bacteria, etc. The cover looks like a Japanese horror novel, lol, and I’m so curious to start this.
I was delighted and surprised when author Marti Leimbach contacted me—after seeing Dragonfly Girl listed on my 12 Young Adult Science Fiction Books to Read in 2021 (I got a lot of mileage out of those lists, lol)—and asked if I’d like to read and review it. Of course I said “yes”!
I’ve had my eye on The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec for months, so I was happy to be offered an eARC by the publisher. One more “witch” book to add to my list!
Finally, I grabbed A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark as soon as it popped up on NetGalley. I’m on a mission to catch up with his backlist after reading the incredible Ring Shout.

Is it because I’m still under the “influence” of SciFi Month, and therefore still very connected to SF as a genre, or is there a great number of SF books coming out lately? 😉

I’d really like to try The Witch’s Heart, though I wonder how much I’m being influenced by how the cover reminds me of Circe. And of course I need to pick up Escape Pod for that Godiva box of chocolates experience! 🙂

All the stories are so different, I think that’s why I loved it.
I was totally beginning to think Tor.com wasn’t doing ARCs anymore until I got a copy of Neuvel’s book as well – I was so excited! I saw a lot of good eARCs on NetGalley/Edel as well but arggh, I’m trying to be good. I guess I’ll go nuts in the new year 🙂
I’ve been really bad with NetGalley, and it’s hard to say no when the books are literally months away from being published:-)
I’m also curious to see if Winter’s Orbit fits the marketing blurb! 😀
I was completely unaware of Day Zero, I quite enjoyed Sea of Rust so I’m curious to read Cargill’s new science fiction book! ^^
