Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Now that SciFiMonth is over, how about some fantasy?
Set in a world of goblin wars, stag-sized battle ravens, and assassins who kill with deadly tattoos, Christopher Buehlman’s The Blacktongue Thief begins a ‘dazzling’ (Robin Hobb) fantasy adventure unlike any other.
Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path. But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.
Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.
Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva’s. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.
The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buelhman. Releases in May 2021 from Tor Books. I’ve been chomping at the bit to share this cover with you since SciFiMonth started, lol, and now I finally can! I’m beyond excited for this, as Buelhman’s The Suicide Motor Club is one of my all time favorite books. Obviously this is going to be completely different, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to love this too.
American Gods meets The Chronicles of Narnia in this adult fantasy about the Biblical Adam recovering the lost pieces of the Garden of Eden.
Many millennia after the fall of Eden, Adam, the first man in creation, still walks the Earth – exhausted by the endless death and destruction, he is a shadow of his former hope and glory. And he is not the only one. The Garden was deconstructed, its pieces scattered across the world and its inhabitants condemned to live out immortal lives, hiding in plain sight from generations of mankind.
But now pieces of the Garden are turning up on the Earth. After centuries of loneliness, Adam, haunted by the golden time at the beginning of Creation, is determined to save the pieces of his long lost home. With the help of Eden’s undying exiles, he must stop Eden becoming the plaything of mankind.
Adam journeys across America and the British Isles with Magpie, Owl, and other animals, gathering the scattered pieces of Paradise. As the country floods once more, Adam must risk it all to rescue his friends and his home – because rebuilding the Garden might be the key to rebuilding his life.
Birds of Paradise by Oliver K. Langmead. Releases in March 2021 from Titan Books. If you don’t already know I’m a huge Oliver Langmead fan, then maybe you’re a new visitor to this site. But I’ve loved both of his previous books, Dark Star and Metronome. I’m beyond excited to see a new book from him, although I’m a little hesitant about the Biblical story line. However, I think this could be really interesting, and I’m definitely going to give it a try! Also, how can you resist this gorgeous cover??
Yalxi, the deposed Supreme Mistress of the Guild of Sorcerers, is on a desperate mission. Her lover and confidant seized her throne and stole the precious diamond heart, the jewel that is the engine of her power. Yalxi sets out to regain her magic and find a weapon capable of destroying the usurper. But this will mean turning to unlikely allies and opening herself up to unpleasant memories that have been suppressed for many years. For Yalxi is no great hero, but a cunning sorceress who once forged her path in blood – and must reckon with the consequences.
Set in a fantastical land where jewels and blood provide symbiotic magical powers to their wearers, The Return of the Sorceress evokes the energy of classic sword and sorcery, while building a thoroughly fresh and exciting adventure ripe for our era.
The Return of the Sorceress by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in Summer 2021 from Subterranean Press. This was a complete surprise! I just happened to see this cover reveal by the author on Facebook, and I knew I had to include it today. Isn’t the cover lovely? Cover art by Fang Xinyu. I’m a fan of Sub Press’s limited edition books, and I’ll be keeping my eye out for the on sale announcement from the publisher:-D
Moreno-Garcia put out more books than I can manage to read! 😀 And this one looks fantastic (no surprise there…), starting from that amazing cover: images with a source of light surrounded by darkness are my favorite…

She’s so busy, right?
Wow! Tammy, the covers of all the books are drop-dead gorgeous and I liked the blurbs of all of them. Looking forward to reviews of all of them.

Thanks Debjani! I agree, this is a great batch of covers.
The Blacktongue Thief got me like stag-sized battle ravens… no need to say more because that sounds awesooome! I gotta say Birds of Paradise sounds like it could be a really unique read too. And so does The Return of the Sorceress. That cover is really gorgeous!

I can hardly wait for Blacktongue Thief! And I’ve already read some glowing reviews:-)
I’m anxious for The Blacktongue Thief, too. I’m totally new to Oliver K. Langmead!
Langmead is so good, he’s one of my underrated authors.
Oooh, I didn’t know The Blacktongue Thief had a cover – I’ve been waiting for that too . . . and The Return of the Sorceress sounds amazing!

I love both covers!
Another Silvia Moreno-Garcia! Ye just made the day so much better! The Thief one sounds good too. Arrrr!
x The Captain
Lots of goodies to look forward too:-)
All of these sound awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Lauren:-)
Ooh, such pretty covers! And a new Silvia Moreno-Garcia is definitely something to look forward to!
It’s exciting, right?
I love Buehlman as you know so I may have to give his fantasy a try. I also love Moreno-Garcia so it’s going on the list as well. Now the middle one – that cover is both beautiful and disturbing but yep, you’re three for three because it’s going on the list as well. I think it’s that eye! If I look too long I might have nightmares.
The longer you look at that cover the more strange it becomes, right?
I love the look of all of these – needless to say I’m jumping up and down with excitement at the prospect of another Silvia Moreno-Garcia offering in the coming year! But The Bird of Paradise looks fabulous! Thank you for sharing these, Tammy:))
Yes, another SMG book is great news!
These all sound amazing! I’m really going to need to get a list going of 2021 releases I need to watch out for. 🙂
2021 is already killing it!
Each one of these looks promising, especially The Blacktongue Thief, and I do love a good fantasy novel. And that cover for Birds of Paradise is fantastic!
I agree, that’s got to be a new favorite cover of mine!
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is quite prolific! I need to get started with her stuff, I’m so behind haha.
She writes in so many different genres too, it’s pretty amazing.
That Blacktongue Thief sounds interesting. Plus it seems that Robin Hobb liked it too (I don’t usually care about such things, but I’m too much of a Robin Hobb fan to ignore this, lol).
I agree, the Robin Hobb blurb makes it even more tempting:-)
I have The Black tongue Thief on my TBR and I am sooooo looking forward to it! I haven’t heard of the other two books yet, but they seem interesting too!
LOL yeah I featured The Blacktongue Thief too because it was one of the cover reveals that happened during Sci-fi Month while I was still exclusively featuring sci-fi picks. Now that November’s over, there are quite a few I have lined up !
Return of the Sorceress looks so good! I didn’t know she had a knew one coming out. The Black Tongue Thief is on my radar. I hope you enjoy all three of these when you read them, Tammy!
I LOVE that Return of the Sorceress cover!!

I can’t wait for the Moreno Garcia book and I think I saw the Buehlman book on Netgalley. It does look good.

The Blacktongue Thief sounds so good! And I hadn’t heard about this Silvia Moreno-Garcia release. I’ve only read her Mexican Gothic, but it was so good I feel I need to read everything she writes now.
