This week’s theme: A cover that is modern sci-fi.
I’m not 100% sure what “modern sci-fi” is, but I’m going with a book whose covers feel modern to me, as opposed to “vintage” sci-fi. My choice this week is Head On by John Scalzi, the sequel to Lock In. I found five covers for this book, so let’s take a look!
Tor Books (U.S.) edition 2018 | Tor Books UK edition 2018
Thorndike Press edition 2018 | German edition 2018 | Italian edition 2019
I guess these are OK, but honestly none of them really get me excited. I do like the simplicity of the Tor US cover—the story involves a violent game where robot-like players compete to tear the heads off their opponents–and the artwork is rather clever. I also like the Italian edition, although it looks slightly vintage to me, anyone else? I guess for my favorite, I’m going with the Italian cover:
Hmm… Although all of the covers look pretty good to me, I think I’m loving the UK edition the most.

The Urania covers always tend toward the “vintage” feel, particularly with the trademark red circle enclosing the image, which has remained more or less the same from the times of the historical illustrator Karel Thole. If you look for him on Google you will find many such examples 🙂

I lean towards the Tor Books UK cover. Nice and shiny. 🙂 I’ve not started this series yet.
Interesting covers. The two Tor covers are my favorites but just I always tend to be drawn to that black, red, and white color scheme, lol.
I like the second Tor cover best. But yours was a close second for me.

I agree with you on the Italian edition – if I didn’t know I’d have guessed it was from like the 70s or something.
I love that cover (your winner)! I remember liking the same version for the first book too. It’s very clever.
I have to say, I really love the simplicity of the original cover for this one, but the others are fun too!
I’ve always liked the kind of simple covers Scalzi has, like the US Tor one. But I do kind of like the UK Tor one as well. This is fun! Thanks f or sharing!

I love that cover you chose. And, no. I’ve not read this one yet. So behind.

Also. Sorry I’m so behind with comments. I’m having problems with my laptop so I’m doing these on my phone, which takes a lot longer!
