Over-Booked [129] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

Well, it’s been a month since my last book haul, and I didn’t realize it until I looked at my calendar. How can time go by so fast and so slowly at the same time? I guess it’s that weird time warp of 2020 that we can’t seem to get out of… Anyway, I have just a few physical review copies to share, but a BUNCH of eARCs, so obviously my plans to back off NetGalley aren’t going very well.  Here are the latest review books I’ve added to my pile:

Physical books for review:

Tor.com was kind enough to send me a couple of review copies. I’ve already read and reviewed The Factory Witches of Lowell by C.S. Malerich. I didn’t like it as much as I’d hoped, but I did like the historical aspects of the story.

Also from Tor.com, I’m super excited to have this gorgeous copy of Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor. I’ve been hearing very positive things, and it comes out in January, so not much longer to wait. Thank you Tor.com!

Big thanks to Quirk Books for Secret Santa by Andrew Shaffer. This looks like a lot of fun: “The Office meets Stephen King.”

From Orbit books, I received a couple of very exciting books. First up, The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick, a January release that’s getting lots of buzz. And one of my most highly anticipated books of the year, Call of the Bone Ships by R.J. Barker, the second book in his seafaring/dragon series. I’m reading this right now and loving it! Thank you to Orbit:-D

Finally, I received this surprise from Gallery/Saga Press, Honeycomb by Joanne M. Harris. This is an illustrated collection of dark fairy tales and I’m really looking forward to checking them out! Thank you Saga!

Digital ARCs for review:

OK buckle in…

I was so excited to be approved for Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Chapman! I loved his last book (The Remaking) and I’m curious to see what he does with the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.

Joseph D’Lacey contacted me and offered up a copy of his next book, Weed. I’ve enjoyed his books in the past and I’m really looking forward to this one. Plant horror, guys! One of my favorite tropes/subgenres. This is also on NetGalley if anyone is interested.

Two new Tor.com eARCs: I just featured We Shall Sing a Song Into the Deep by Andrew Kelly Stewart on Future Fiction, so when it popped up on NetGalley the other day, I grabbed it! I also grabbed Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters by Aimee Ogden, which I also featured recently. It’s so hard to pass up eARCs that I showcase on Future Fiction!

There’s a trend going on…out of the next six books, five of them are past Future Fiction picks! Stormland by John Shirley is a cyberpunk detective thriller with shades of post-apocalyptic horror, I can’t wait to read it:-D

The Project by Courtney Summers is a cult thriller, and after recently reading an excellent story about a cult (The Children of Red Peak), I was very happy to be approved for this.

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten is being called a “brilliantly disturbing thriller” by the publisher. I’m so ready for that, I hope it lives up to that description!

Tor Books offered me a copy of The Best of R.A. Lafferty, one of their Tor Essentials titles. I’m not familiar with the author, although I should be, so I’m happy to have this collection so I can catch up.

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner is one I’m very curious about. This sounds like a lot of fun, a historical fantasy with a queer romance!

Finally, I was offered a copy of The Moonsteel Crown by Stephen Deas, and I love everything about this book, including the cover.

Huge thanks to Quirk Books, Joseph D’Lacey, Tor.com, Blackstone Publishing, Wednesday Books, Minotaur Books, Tor Books, Angry Robot and Ace!

And that’s my latest book haul! I’d love to hear if you plan to read any of these:-D

  1. I get the feeling I might enjoy a movie version of Secret Santa. Love the cover and it sounds fun. And I’ve been wanting to read another book by Nnedi Okorafor for too long now. That’s another one with a great cover.

  2. There are a couple here that I really really want! We Shall Sing a Song… and Sun Daughters, Sea Daughters. I’ve just requested Bear Head, so fingers crossed!!
