Over-Booked [128] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

Not too big of a haul today, considering this is about a month’s worth of books. And I’m doing much better with NetGalley requests, although I have some 2021 requests that are just hanging out there, so maybe those will get approved at some point. I also won a cool giveaway, so I’ll share that as well! And I have been buying quite a few books, but I may just save those for another post. In the meantime, here are the latest exciting arrivals:

Physical books for review:

I was so excited to get this surprise paperback copy of The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman. I missed reading this when it came out last year, and I’m going to squeeze it in for sure. Huge thanks to Quirk for the review copy!

And big thanks to Saga Press for a finished copy of The Hollow Places, which I just reviewed a couple of days ago. I really enjoyed this twisty horror story about an alternate universe. The link goes to my review if you haven’t read it yet:-D

I remember drooling over Shadows of the Short Days by Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson when it was released in the UK, and I was thrilled when Titan contacted me about reading the new U.S. release. Thank you Titan!

Quirk sent another surprise, a copy of Sam Maggs’s The Fangirl’s Guide to the Universe and The Fangirl’s Journal for Leveling Up. There was also a cute sticker sheet included! These books are geared more towards teens, but they are super cute, especially if you are a geeky girl and you’re really into fandoms. The journal is a companion book designed in a similar style, but with prompts and space to write and draw. I wish I knew a girl in the 13-17 range who might love this, if you are interested, let me know, I’m willing to regift this:-D Thank you Quirk!

Author Tiffany McDaniel had contacted me way back in August, I think, about reading her latest book, Betty. After some delays, I finally received this beautiful signed hardcover in the mail! I’m so freaking excited to read this, guys. Everyone I know who has read it is RAVING about it. Look for me to read and review in the next few weeks! Hugs to Tiffany!

Big thanks to Angry Robot for a copy of The Rush’s Edge by Ginger Smith! I’m saving this for Sci Fi Month in November, so check back next month for a review!

And another book that will be perfect for Sci Fi Month is Attack Surface by Cory Doctorow. I would classify this book as cyberpunk, and it’s a subgenre I haven’t read in a while. I am looking forward to it, though, as I used to read a lot of his books back in my pre-blogging days, and I’m curious to check him out again. Huge thanks to Tor Books for the copy!

Digital ARCs for review:

I actually have a physical copy of Call of the Bone Ships by R.J. Barker on the way, but I also was given access to the digital ARC since I just couldn’t wait, lol. One of my most highly anticipated sequels of 2020!

I’m excited to check out The Forever Sea by Joshua Phillip Johnson, the start of a new “environmental fantasy.” Plus this cover!

I recently found out about Eight Cylinders by Jason Parent, which sounds super cool! And here’s another cover that I absolutely love. This is a short novella that comes out next month, so I’ll be reading it soon.

Finally, a sci-fi from Angry Robot called Doors of Sleep: Journals of Zaxony Delatree by Tim Pratt. This doesn’t come out until January, but you’re probably going to see it on a list next month for SciFiMonth, just saying:-D

Huge thanks to Orbit Books, DAW, Crystal Lake Publishing and Angry Robot:-D

Giveaway win:

I entered this giveaway on a whim and somehow won! Alma Katsu, author of The Deep and The Hunger, gave away the first four books in Rachel Caine’s Stillhouse Lake series. You may know that Rachel Caine is battling a very aggressive form of cancer and is currently in hospice. It’s terribly sad and I can’t even imagine:-( Thank you to Alma for hosting this giveaway!

And that’s my haul for now! I’d love to hear if you have plans to read any of these books:-D

My Call of the Bone Ships won’t be here until later this week. But it will be worth waiting for, I hope:-)

  1. Laurie Harris

I cannot wait to get my hands on Call of the Bone Ships! I loved the first book and have heard great things about this one. Enjoy!

  2. Shadows of the Short Days has me interested because of it being Icelandic. I loved Little Brother so I’m sure I might also enjoy Attach Surface. And I remember that cover for The Forever Sea when you featured it, really interesting.

  3. Will

I love that cover for the Forever Sea! And yeah, I couldn’t decide on Doors of Sleep, so I’m just going to hang it all on your review of it, okay?

  4. Ah, I thought the Remaking sounded familiar, I see it’s gotten a new cover! Love it! And I hope you’ll enjoy The Rush’s Edge. I passed on that because m tbr is already so full, but just watch, it’s going to turn out amazing and I will regret passing on it just like I regret passing on The Phlebotomist!

I probably should have passed on Rush’s Edge but I have the worst time saying “no” when the book looks really good:-)

  5. What a nice haul but it sometimes makes me feel truly overbooked. I received many great audios this week. I have read and loved Rachel Caine’s Stillhouse Lake series and I love it. I have read and enjoyed several of her series. I am heartbroken she has such a tough battle.

  6. Oh my Lord, where has Eight Cylinders been all my life? A fast car AND tentacles! Sign me up! Is Betty more literary horror? I’ve seen some reviews and I just saw it at my library but was afraid to grab it.

    • Tammy

Right? Doesn’t Eight Cylinders sound amazing? I think Betty has horror elements but I think it leans more toward literary. It’s supposed to be really sad.

I am so excited for Sci-Fi November! I have added The Rush’s Edge to my TBR pile (thanks!) I can’t wait to hear your review of it. I wanted to recommend another book for next month that I think is a must read (super unique, funny and a concept that feels like it could really happen). It’s called “The Code: If your AI loses its mind, can it take meds?” by Peter McAllister (https://www.petermcallisterauthor.com/). In the future, humanity is using nano-bots to mine for resources on the moon. An AI in charge of the operation goes haywire (something similar to mental illness) and a top engineer and his team is sent to fix things before it causes the destruction of the moon and quite possibly the world! I was pretty interested in this book by the title alone, but once I started reading I basically finished it in a few sittings. It is full of edge of your seat suspense, moments of levity and lots of thoughtfulness. Definitely a must read! Happy SCI FI NOVEMBER EVERYONE

  8. Well done winning the Rachel Caine books – I’ve read and enjoyed the first one and have the 2nd and 3rd which I need to catch up with. I heart about the author’s illness, it’s very sad.
    Lynn 😀
