What’s On My Plate – October 2020

Happy October, everyone! Just like September, October is bursting with new SFF book releases, all of which I want to read, of course. This might be the most book crowded month yet, and even though there’s no way I can read everything I want to, at least I can say my choices are excellent:-D Below is a list of October books I have for review, and all of these are linked to Goodreads if you want to read the full blurb:

These first four are probably my most anticipated of the month, although the next six are also highly anticipated! Starting out with The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow. I know many readers like me who can’t wait to see her follow-up to The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse is already getting lots of rave reviews, and I’m hoping I can add my own rave review to the pile too:-D

I’m also highly anticipating R.S. Belcher’s next book, The Ghost Dance Judgement. It’s the fourth book in his Golgotha series and I cannot WAIT.

Last year I was delightfully surprised by How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason, so of course I’m looking forward to the sequel, How the Multiverse Got Its Revenge.

I loved The Absinthe Earl last year, and the sequel, The Raven Lady, sounds really good! Author Sharon Lynn Fisher will also be visiting the blog soon (see more info below)!

I’m a big V.E. Schwab fan, and I’ve been hearing mostly glowing reports of her new book, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I can confirm that this book is wonderful! I’m currently reading it and loving it.

I have yet to read anything by P. Djèlí Clark—although I just bought a couple of his novellas—but I always hear the best things about his books. Ring Shout is his new novella and hear it’s a very powerful story.

Alice Hoffman never disappoints, which is one reason I’m super excited to read Magic Lessons, a prequel of sorts to her well loved Practical Magic.

By now I probably sound like a broken record, lol, but I’ve heard amazing things about Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee. Can’t wait to dive in!

Finally in this “most anticipated” pile is The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher. I have no doubt this will be the perfect spooky read for October.

And my list goes on! I’m also excited about all of these books: The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk will be my first Polk book.

Greensmith by Aliya Whiteley is one I’ve been anticipating for months. I’m glad the release month is finally here.

I’ve already read Over the Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker (aka Seanan McGuire). This is the “book within a book” in Middlegame, which I absolutely loved. It was fun to see the parallels between the two, and reading this brought back lots of great memories of reading Middlegame. Review will be up soon!

These last three all fit the October vibe I’m going for: Voodoo Heart by John Everson, We Hear Voices by Evie Green, and The Easton Falls Massacre by Holly Rae Garcia & Ryan Prentice Garcia. I read The Easton Falls Massacre by mistake last month—oops. I got confused and thought it was a September book. So I’ve already read this and my review will be up later in the month.

Personal Halloween Reads:

As if the above SIXTEEN books aren’t enough to keep me busy, I’m trying hard to read some of my personal purchases, which include Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones, Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare and Bunny by Mona Awad. These are all perfect for October and I’m challenging myself to read at least one of these by the end of the month.

Author/Book Events/Giveaways

I’m so happy to have Sharon Lynn Fisher back on the blog later this month to celebrate the release of The Raven Lady! I’ll be posting an excerpt of the book and I believe Sharon mentioned a giveaway, so check back on release day, October 13th!

I’m also hosting Rod Belcher this month in honor of his latest book, The Ghost Dance Judgement. I think we’re doing an excerpt of the book, but I’m not sure yet. Um, yeah my plans are a little up in the air, ha ha. Never fear, everything will work itself out eventually! Stay tuned for more details.

Here are the books I read and reviewed in September (click on the titles to read my reviews). Although I didn’t read as much as I wanted, it was an excellent month, with THREE five-star books!

The Trials of Koli by M.R. Carey

The Phlebotomist by Chris Panatier

The Hive Queen by Robin Kirk

The Residence by Andrew Pyper

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

They Threw Us Away by Daniel Kraus

The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry

I’d love to hear if you’re planning on reading any of these books. What is your most highly anticipated October read?

  1. Sounds like a good month of reading ahead. I also have Ring Shout and The Once and Future Witches in my TBR. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to reading them though.

  2. After breezing through two books in RS Belcher’s King of the Road series, I now need to go back to the Golgotha saga, where I stopped at the first volume, because the cover of the upcoming new book looks SO promising! And I look forward to your interview post with the author 🙂

The Golgotha series gets better and better as it goes along. You can see his progression as a writer, it’s very cool:-)

  3. You had such a good reading month I would say you stand a good chance of reading quite a few of this months. I’m looking forward to quite a few of these too and have started Addie LaRue already.
    Lynn 😀

  4. Looks like you’ll have a packed October, Tammy! There are SO many great new releases coming out this month, it’s exciting, but also scary because my new releases keep piling up haha. Have a great month!

I do these lists mostly to keep track of books I need to review. I can always go back to this post during the month to see what I want to read next:-)

  5. Wow, that is quite a list. Good luck getting through them! The two I’m most looking forward to are The Once and Future Witches and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. But there are several others there I’d like to try. I used to love horror but don’t read much of it these days, so with Halloween coming I’d like to find some good seasonal picks. Not sure what yet, likely older books or stories that’ve been sitting on my shelves for much too long.

  6. I just finished The Hollow Places, and loved it! Working on my review this morning… I’m planning to read Once & Future Witches, Addie LaRue, and Black Sun for sure. Looking forward to the Baxter/McGuire book too!

You seem to have a lot on your plate. As usual I hope you find time for it all and have an excellent month!

  8. As usual, some great looking books. I am reading Clowns in a Cornfield for a book club this month as well. I am dying for you to read Bunny. I just NEED to hear your thoughts. Belcher definitely has some of the best book covers in the genre!
