Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
This week, a highly anticipated sequel, an award-winning author’s debut novel, and a debut YA Gothic horror story:
A brilliantly imagined saga of honour, glory and warfare, Call of the Bone Ships is the captivating epic fantasy sequel to RJ Barker’s The Bone Ships.
Dragons have returned to the Hundred Isles. But their return heralds only war and destruction. When a horde of dying slaves are discovered in the bowels of a ship, Shipwife Meas and the crew of the Tide Child find themselves drawn into a vicious plot that will leave them questioning their loyalties and fighting for their lives.
Call of the Bone Ships (The Tide Child #2) by R.J. Barker. Releases in November 2020 from Orbit Books. FINALLY the cover has been revealed!! This sequel to one of my favorite fantasy books ever (The Bone Ships) is coming out in November, yet Orbit just revealed the cover. I think it’s stunning, what do you think? I know the blurb is very sparse, but I’m OK with that because I’d love to go in blind when I read this.
Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djèlí Clark returns to his popular alternate Cairo universe for his fantasy novel debut, A Master of Djinn
Cairo, 1912: Though Fatma el-Sha’arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she’s certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer.
So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case. Al-Jahiz transformed the world 50 years ago when he opened up the veil between the magical and mundane realms, before vanishing into the unknown. This murderer claims to be al-Jahiz, returned to condemn the modern age for its social oppressions. His dangerous magical abilities instigate unrest in the streets of Cairo that threaten to spill over onto the global stage.
Alongside her Ministry colleagues and her clever girlfriend Siti, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city – or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems….
A Master of Djinn (Fatma el-Sha’arawi series) by P. Djèlí Clark. Releases in May 2021 from Tor.com. I’m not quite sure how this novel fits in with the other, shorter stories in this series (The Haunting of Tram Car 015 and A Dead Djinn in Cairo) but I’d love to catch up with both of those before May. I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about Clark and I look forward to jumping on the bandwagon!
Tess Matheson only wants three things: time to practice her cello, for her sister to be happy, and for everyone else to leave her alone.
Instead, Tess finds herself working all summer at her boarding school library, shelving books and dealing with the intolerable patrons. The worst of them is Eliot Birch: snide, privileged, and constantly requesting forbidden grimoires. After a bargain with Eliot leads to the discovery of an ancient book in the library’s grimoire collection, the pair accidentally unleash a book-bound demon.
The demon will stop at nothing to stay free, manipulating ink to threaten those Tess loves and dismantling Eliot’s strange magic. Tess is plagued by terrible dreams of the devil and haunting memories of a boy who wears Eliot’s face. All she knows is to stay free, the demon needs her… and he’ll have her, dead or alive.
The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino. Releases in August 2021 from Page Street Kids. This sounds like a fantastic combination: books and demons! This is Bovalino’s debut, and I think it sounds like fun. And I love the cover:-)
I still have to read The Bone Ships, but the sequel makes me wanna remedy to that 😉 Also, The Devil Makes Three seems to have potential, so I’m gonna keep an eye on it! Thanks for this, I was looking for some gothic horror reads to add to my list 😀
I’ve been loving Gothic horror too, there seems to be a lot these days:-)
The Devil makes three sounds seriously awesome, I’ll need to check it out.
I agree, Yvonne! I do love stories about demons.
The Devil Makes Three sounds scary and fun. Pretty cover, too.

The cover really caught my eye, but the description sounds perfect:-)
Ooh- the Clark book is exciting! He’s awesome! I actually have not read these two short stories though I’ve been meaning too so I guess I’ll have to get to it before May.
I’m going to be reading Ring Shout soon:-)
I absolutely cannot wait for Call of the Boneships! The first book of the series was phenomenal
I agree Laurie! I just read it this year and it’s definitely going to be in my top ten:-)
The Bone Ships was far from my favorite book ever, but I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Hey, enjoyment is good enough:-)
A Master of Djinn sounds incredible! I’m always on the look out for fantasy novels set in Cairo and with a blurb from Chakraborty, I’m in!
I agree, it sounds fantastic!
I really need to read The Bone Ships, your review is excellent and makes me want to pick it up immediately! And you’re right, the cover for the sequel is quite beautiful! 😀

I know, it’s going to be nice to visit the characters again:-)
I love the covers of the first two but I won’t be reading them (that I know of). I’m pretty sure I featured the third one already so yay, no books from you going on the TBR this week. Of course, that’s probably just one week out of 100 or more so it’s only a small win. Hope you’re liking Addie LaRue!
I probably saw the last one on your blog:-) I’m really loving Addie LaRue!
Another great looking lineup here. I’d very much like to read the Bone Ships series, especially after how much you enjoyed the first. I’d never heard of P. Djèlí Clark, but A Master of Djinn sounds really intriguing. I’ve started searching for his shorter work to give it a try. And I agree with you, that last one has a nice combination of elements that could work really well.
I’ve been hearing people rave about Clark for a while now, I’ve got to see what all the fuss is about:-)
These all look good! I guess I really should read The Bone Ships. 🙂
It’s so good!
I’m loving the cover of Call of the Bone Ships. I have been wanting to read that series for some time now. I hope this new one will be good. I mean, dragons! I haven’t read anything by Clark, A Master of Djinn sounds really interesting. The Devil Makes Three is completely new to me, but grimoires! I must read that one! I hope you enjoy all of these when you get a chance to read them, Tammy. More to go on my wish list. 🙂 Have a great week.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a great week as well:-)
Oooh! All of these covers look beautiful, especially the Devil Makes Three! Great picks!

I still need to read The Bone Ships but I still plan on definitely doing that. I love the idea of an alternate Cairo universe in A Master of Djinn. Consider me intrigued! The Devil Makes Three sounds like a great read too. I love reading about demons!

I think so too!
Ooh, The Devil Makes Three sounds so good!
I agree, super spooky, plus books:-)
Yay, I had a feeling you and others would have Call of the Bone Ships well covered today! I didn’t like the first book as much as his Wounded Kingdom trilogy but I will probably continue – it’s got a lot of promise 🙂
I’ll have to check out the Wounded Kingdom trilogy one day, if you liked it more, I need to see why, lol.
The P. Djèlí Clark book sounds good, looks like another new-to-me author I should probably check out 🙂

These are new to me, they all look really good, you have the best picks!
Thanks Heather:-)
The Call of the Bone Ships has such a gorgeous cover, and I can’t wait to read it! I’m super freaking excited for A Master of Djinn, too! And that cover is just *chef’s kiss*. Bring on 2021 and all these great books, please.
Yeah that cover for A Master of Djinn is so detailed, I can’t stop staring at it!
Omg omg omg I need to read A Master of Djinn! I love P. Djèlí Clark more than words can express
