Over-Booked [127] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

In my last Over-Booked post, I shared my most recent purchases, so today I’m focusing on recent review books received. Remember that time when I said I was on a NetGalley ban? Yeah. That’s not working out so well. In my defense, however, most of these new digital ARCs don’t come out until 2021, so I almost feel like they don’t count. Ha ha. Let’s go with that!

Physical books for review:

Orbit was very generous and sent three exciting books! First up, this lovely finished copy of The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart! I’ve already read and reviewed this, and I really enjoyed it, although it wasn’t a five star read for me like it was for so many other readers.

I was also thrilled to receive a finished copy of The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky from Orbit. I’ve read so many rave reviews for this book I’m simply giddy to start it. I’m not sure when that will be, but hopefully soon. I think this is science fiction so it would be perfect for Sci Fi Month in November!

And one more big thanks and a hug to Orbit for this surprise copy of Nophek Gloss by Essa Hansen. I’ve seen this around but I wasn’t expecting to get a copy. Now it’s firmly on my TBR for Sci Fi Month in November:-D

Huge thanks to Gallery/Saga Press for these next three books: I received a surprise copy of The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson, which I featured on a Future Fiction not too long ago. I’m so happy to have a copy, it sounds fantastic!

Machine by Elizabeth Bear is actually the second book in Bear’s White Space series. I haven’t read Ancestral Night, but I was told this book acts well as a standalone. I’m definitely saving this for Sci Fi Month! Big thanks to Wunderkind PR for hooking me up:-D

And I was surprised with this ARC of Machinehood by S.B. Divya, a March release from Saga. I’m very curious about this one, and also grateful that I can add it to next year’s pile:-D

This lovely copy of These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong was sent to me by Simon & Schuster, and I couldn’t be more excited. This is an Asian inspired retelling of Romeo and Juliet and it sounds wonderful!

This is Not the Jess Show by Anna Carey sounds like a fun, twisty YA. I requested this from Quirk and I’m kind of surprised I received a copy. But big thanks to the publisher! This is a November release so it will be coming up on the pile soonish.

I’ve already read this quirky MG fantasy, They Threw Us Away by Daniel Kraus. You can click that link if you haven’t read my review yet. Thanks to Sami at Kaye Publicity for the review copy!

And I have to give a shout-out to Jenni from the Tar Heel Reader. Back when Covid was just getting started, I won a copy of Who Rescued Who by Victoria Schade in an Instagram giveaway, and due to Covid, the publisher wasn’t able to send my copy. Jenni kindly stepped up and bought one for me instead, and I couldn’t be more grateful. She is a lovely blogger, you should definitely follow her! Thank you Jenni:-)

Digital books for review:

Starting off with some super exciting eARCS: Instinct by Jason M. Hough is described as “Twin Peaks meets Blake Crouch.” That’s all I need to know:-D

The Future is Yours by Dan Frey was a recent Future Fiction pick, and I’m very much looking forward to this sci-fi story about a computer that sees one year into the future.

The Russian Cage by Charlaine Harris. This is the third book in Harris’s Gunnie Rose series, and even though I had some issues with the last book, I’m looking forward to jumping back into this cool world!

Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee. I’ve seen several glowing reviews around the blogosphere and I’m so happy to have been approved for an eARC. This comes out next month so I hope to read it very soon.

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst. I really loved the last Durst book I read (Race the Sands), so I’m excited to read more of her work. And bonus, this is adult!

Forget Me Not by Alexandra Oliva. I requested this on a whim—I think it was a “wish” book on NetGalley—after seeing it on Mogsy’s blog, and my wish was granted:-D I’m eager to try this author!

Threader Origins by Gerald Brandt was pitched to me by a publicist at DAW Books and I liked the sound of it. Plus bonus, it’s not out until January;-)

And that’s my haul for now! Let me know if you plan to read any of these books:-D

  1. What a great haul! There are lots of interesting titles that piqued my attention here, but I’d put These Violent Delights at the top of my list!

  2. Wow, nice haul! The Bone Shard Daughter is on my TBR list as well and I grabbed a digital copy of The Bone Maker last week. Phoenix Extravagant is next on my TBR – I had a physical ARC (and bookmark!) land a few weeks ago.

  3. Oh my goodness! This is an AMAZING list – the one that has me jumping up and down excited (literally!) is Machine, as Ancestral Night is my favourite read of the year to date… So I am going to get hold of the audiobook and sink into this one that will, hopefully, be as awesome as the first book in this series. And I, too, am looking forward to The Russian Cage and am very intrigued by Threader Origins:)). Thank you for sharing, Tammy!

  4. So many good looking books in this batch. I’m at the point I’ll try anything by Tchaikovsky. I’ve been curious about The Bone Shard Daughter and I’m beginning to want to try something by Elizabeth Bear. And These Violent Delights intriques me. Glad to hear NetGalley hasn’t been getting the best of you!

I’m particularly excited about the Tchaikovsky, it’s long though so I need to psyche myself up to start it, lol.

  5. I received Machine and Machinehood late in the week too, and at first I was so confused because my mind has been so scattered lately, the similar titles made me think I got two copies of the same book 😛 It’s nice to know the Elizabeth Bear one can be read as a standalone though, I was worried when I saw it was a book 2!

Very smart. I’d love to do the backlist thing next year too, but it’s crazy how that review TBR gets away from you, right?

  6. So many interesting titles!! The Bone Shard Daughter is the one I am most curious about, but I am curious to know what you would think about Tchaikovsky’s book and about Phoenix Extravagant!

  7. The only one I’ve got on my immediate TBR is Bone Shard Daughter, though I really want to give Phoenix Extravagant a try too. I’ve already loved Dragon Pearl and we’re reading Ninefox Gambit for a bookclub on reddit this month so I might go on a Lee kick.

I’m so hyped for These Violent Delights How do you juggle so many ARCs though??? I’m overly restrained on my ARC requests otherwise I’d get too stressed out
