What’s On My Plate – September 2020

Well, here we are. We’re headed into the Fall publishing season and boy are there a ton of books coming out that I’m hoping to read! I’m officially on a self imposed NetGalley ban, so I hope you guys hold me to that. I have a few outstanding requests but other than that, I really want to knock a bunch of titles off my shelf between now and the end of the year.

The books I’m listing below and hoping to read are mostly books from publishers or authors, although I am joining a buddy read for one non-review book. But same old drill. This is more of a menu of hopeful reads, but I will be prioritizing my most anticipated books first, and I’ll list the others after that. I’ve also got August books I’m hoping to catch up with so there’s a LOT. Let’s get started!

Most anticipated books of September:

These first six are all must reads for me, and of course they all come out in the first two weeks of the month, thanks publishers:-D The Trials of Koli by M.R. Carey is the second book in his Rampart Trilogy, and I’m very excited to continue Koli’s adventure.

I may have already finished The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry by the time this post goes up, and I’ll have a review up next week for sure.

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart has been getting tons of buzz and rave reviews, and I hope to read this very soon.

I recently read and loved The Bond, the first book in Robin Kirk’s The Bond Trilogy, and I’m excited to jump into book #2, The Hive Queen. This series is such a pleasant surprise! *Also, I hope to post an interview with Robin this month, so stay tuned for that:-)

I’ve also been hearing good things about Master of Poisons by Andrea Hairston, which is being called an African inspired Game of Thrones.

Finally on the “most anticipated of the month” list, The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which looks a lot like science fiction, but the description makes it sound more like fantasy. Sounds like an interesting mash-up, and I’ve already read some good reviews.

More awesome books:

Looking at this list, I just realized how much horror I’m planning to read this month!

I’ve wanted to read Bunny by Mona Awad since it was announced, and I’m finally going to do it this month! The Ladies of Horror Fiction are doing a group read of Bunny over on their Goodreads page, and I thought it would be a fun to join in.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini. Lots of buzz surrounding Paolini’s first venture into adult fiction, and I definitely want to see what all that buzz is about.

The Phlebotomist by Chris Panatier. I think the cover might be a bit misleading, because this sounds like a really cool sci-fi thriller! I can’t wait to dive in.

The next three books are all horror and all impulsive NetGalley requests that I was approved for. The Nesting by C.J. Cooke, The Residence by Andrew Pyper, and The Cabin on Souder Hill by Lonnie Busch all sound really good.

Midnight Horror Show by Ben Lathrop is described as “Midwestern Gothic” and I have to say I’m intrigued!

The Book of Lamps and Banners by Elizabeth Hand. I just realized this is book #4 in a series. Oops. I’m hoping maybe I can dive in anyway? I sure hope so because it sounds really good.

I’ve been hearing lots of buzz for Fable by Adrienne Young, but I’m always a little leary of YA these days. I’m hoping this lives up to the hype!

The Occultists by Polly Schattel is a historical supernatural story that sounds really good. I’m looking forward to this one!

Jagged Edges & Moving Parts by Pete Mesling is a collection of short horror stories, and I’m very curious to check these out.

The Afterlife of the Party by Marlene Perez should be fun if nothing else, we shall see!

I may have finished Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling by the time this post goes up.

Second Chance Angel by Griffin Barber and Kacey Ezell looks like a fun sci-fi and I hope I can fit this in!

Anyone still with me? LOL. Tiffany McDaniel approached me and asked if I’d like to read her new book, Betty, but I had to tell her I just couldn’t add another August book to my plate. She was so kind and said she’d send me a finished copy in September anyway, and since then I’ve been hearing REALLY good things about this book. Now I’m very excited to read it, and hopefully my copy will show up soon!

Here’s a recap of the books I read and reviewed in August. Did you miss any of my reviews?

The Bond by Robin Kirk

Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones

Lone Jack Trail by Owen Laukkanen

Wonderland by Zoje Stage

Blood World by Chris Mooney

Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha

Drowned Country by Emily Tesh

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

Let me know if we have any books in common this month:-D

  1. How many interesting titles!! I have read a lot of interesting things about The Bone shard Daughter and The Doors of Eden. I am curious to know what you would think about them!

  2. This year I finally tried Adrian Tchaikovsky’s work and so far I’ve loved what I’ve read, so I’d be up for trying The Doors of Eden. So many great looking books here. And Halloween is fast approaching, so the extra horror makes some sense. Looking forward to seeing which ones you make it through and hoping they’re some of the better ones!

  3. Sarah

Stay strong my friend- I am overwhelmed for you. Fall is extra overloaded since a lot of the summer and late spring releases were pushed back. I have been exercising lots of restraint lately with requesting new books, even though there are many out there I’d like to get to. Hoping to start The Trials of Koli next.

I’m trying to just go with the flow. I know I can’t read everything, but at least I have a lot to choose from!

  4. I’m looking forward to picking up quite a few of these. So many good books. I quite like the look of Afterlife of the Party.
    Lynn 😀

  5. I thoroughly enjoyed The Doors of Eden, which is a rip-roaring sci fi/fantasy mash-up – so I hope you enjoy this one, too:)). And I’m now halfway through The Trials of Koli and also very much enjoying that one, too. Other than that – all your books are new to me – and I’m stoutly resisting the temptation to nick across and check out several contenders at Netgalley, because I’ve got to get my ARC habit under control! Have a lovely September reading, Tammy:))

  6. I’m really looking forward to The Ghost Tree (starting it later this week) and The Trials of Koli. So many amazing books on the way. September is my heaviest ARC month this year, so I’m going to try to stick to a schedule and not go crazy over it. Enjoy your reading!

  7. I definitely want to read the Doors of Eden, it looks great. I’ve got the first Koli book but have yet to read it which I must get to as I have the next book on order. I’m going to check out the Residence and the Nesting too, they look rather creepy!

    Have fun reading them!

  8. Man, there’s a lot of good looking books here. I need to figure out for sure what I’m reading but I’m doing Monsterathon so there will be lot so horror for sure. I need to squeeze in The Ghost Tree. I can’t wait to see what you think of Bunny! You know how much I didn’t like it. It’s so polarized so I’m super curious. Good luck this month!

    • Tammy

Oh that’s right, you’re one of the ones who didn’t like Bunny. I think that’s one reason I want to read it, I’m so curious to see what I think!

  9. Tammy, Betty is my favorite book this year. I don’t think anything can top it and I look forward to what you think. I fell in love with Tiffany’s writing with her debut, The Summer That Melted Everything, and she is such a lovely person and gifted storyteller!

  10. I need to put myself on a NetGalley ban also, I think! I’m pretty excited for just about all of these as well, and I have no idea how I’m possibly going to come close to making it through them all, haha. I also definitely missed some reviews from the past month, so I definitely need to revisit some. I’ve fallen so behind on catching up with all the blogs I follow, that’s one of the big downsides of starting school again for sure, haha. I hope you have a great month of reading all these fabulous books!

  11. So many great looking books here. I went back and read some of your reviews from August and found a few books to get. And I’ll have to check out the books you’ve got for September. I hope you have a great reading month, Tammy!

    • Tammy

Yeah, all the stuff I didn’t get to in August, plus that stupid idea I had of reading some October books early, lol.

  12. Will

Let’s see, the Bone Shard Daughter, Doors of Eden and Fable are on my list, but otherwise… I seem to have a waaay more chill month planned! I cannot wait to see how you make it through all those! Also, a NetGalley ban is where you can’t request more than one or two books every day, right?

  13. There are so many books here I want to add to my endless TBR list, I’ll have to try to resist as I already have so many 😀 All that horror looks perfect for this time of year, hope you enjoy all your picks for this month.

  14. Wish I could say that I enjoyed The Ghost Tree cause I am pretty sure you did, but I didn’t…lol. So far the only Christina Henry book I have enjoyed has been Lost Boy, but I keep trying! 🙂 I haven’t tried Alice or the Mermaid one yet and afraid too…lol. Can’t wait to see your review!

You have some really cool looking books coming up! Can’t wait to see some of the reviews!

    • Tammy

I’m working on my review of The Ghost Tree now. It did come together for me at the end, but I had some issues with it too.

  15. YES!! So many great books! What a month! You know I’m looking forward to digging into The Trials of Koli! I’m also planning to read The Ghost Tree this month. Hopefully I can get a copy of The Doors of Eden from my library because I want to read that one, too!

Yay for joining us with Bunny!! I’m anxiously awaiting my copy of Yellow Jessamine because it took a huge wrong turn. I’m also getting a late copy of Betty for that exact same reason. She’s so sweet, isn’t she?!
