Buffy’s Corner – Looking at the Week Ahead 6/14/20

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

So what’s new, folks? Is everyone wearing a mask when you go out? I’ve become very serious about mask-wearing, although I’m nowhere near ready to venture out into the big bad world yet. But I do go to work during the week and we wear masks whenever we’re talking to each other. Otherwise I have my own corner of the office, and I don’t wear my mask when I’m alone, working on my computer.

My hubby continues to find wild animals in our city, and he’s been taking photos like crazy! I know you all want to see some, so here are a couple of new ones:

He took the coyote photo from a distance, so he’s not as close to them as this seems.

Upcoming reviews:

I meant to get my review of Hella up last week, but this book took so damn long to read, I just couldn’t pull it off. Look for it tomorrow! And Bookish and the Beast was a quick, fun read, and my review will be up Thursday.

The usual memes…

I spotted a few cover reveals last week, so stop by Wednesday to check out Future Fiction! And this Friday’s Friday Face-Off is “Time,” and I’ve pick an older book that fits well with the theme.

Upcoming reads:

I’ve finally started We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson, and I plan on getting a review up next week. Next, I’ll either dive into Stormblood by Jeremy Szal or The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. Indians is a July release but I’d love to read it this month.

In case you missed…

Last week was a bit light, but it was nice not to be too stressed out about the blog. Here are my posts:

Corporate Gunslinger by Doug Engstrom  – Review

Future Fiction #76

The Friday Face-Off – Bodice Ripper

Hope to see you around the blogosphere this week:-D

    I love the wildlife photos.

I wear a mask when I have to go out, which is feeling very much like an act of defiance here in rural Oregon.

Interesting. I find it odd that some states are really pro mask and others aren’t. California is on board and I’ve grown used to wearing one. I guess the trick is to convince yourself that this is the “new normal” for a while so it doesn’t feel so weird.

    • Tammy

I love that photo too! That one coyote looks mean, though! Like “don’t come any closer” lol.

  2. I’m loving your husband’s photos! They’re great.
Yep, still wearing my mask and my gloves too when I have to touch something. I’m seeing more and more that people are starting to forget the mask. I was heading into the post office a few days ago and it’s when I got to the door to go in, an elderly man walking toward the door realized he’d forgotten his mask.

    • Tammy

I’m glad businesses in my city are enforcing masks if you want to go in, but I know that’s not the case everywhere.

  3. I love the pigeon drinking and coyotes!
I always wear my mask and also bring one with me even if I’m just going for a drive–you never know what could happen. I’m very much not ready to venture out into the world yet, the most ‘public’ thing I’ve done is go to an outdoor nursery with my mom last weekend where we really didn’t even see anyone, let alone come close to them so that was nice! I’m fairly concerned about the loosening of so many mask rules and how defiant some people are about not wanting to wear them.
I’m looking forward to both of your reviews this week! I really hope you enjoy The Only Good Indians if you get to it, it’s a really great read.

    • Tammy

I’m actually shocked by some of the states who aren’t enforcing masks, and even Texas that has businesses that won’t let you in WITH a mask. Crazy!

  4. yes, I wear the masks when I go out which is not often. I wear it when I walk outdoors with the dog in the neighborhood in case I meet people on the sidewalk. I’ve been debating about reading Hella so I’ll look forward to your review.

    Happy reading and stay well!

Me too, I tie a mask around my neck so I can raise and lower it easily. My new fashion accessory!

  5. I’ve only rarely seen or photographed coyotes, they seem such elusive creatures, at least around here. I think it’s awesome he caught them relaxing. And I like the design of the pigeon photo, really nice! I very much dislike wearing a mask, but like you I do when near others. Not fun, but it is what it is. Looking forward to reading about each of your upcoming reads!

    • Tammy

I’m not sure how he got so lucky with these coyotes just lazing around, it’s not that common. They are usually easily spooked.

  6. Does the fact that Hella took a long time to read mean it was hard to get into? I guess I should wait and read your review! I’m planning to start it this coming week, but if the review is less than stellar… well, I may rethink my reading plans!

    • Tammy

So yeah, Hella was pretty slow at times. I won’t say I didn’t enjoy it, but it was definitely uneven.

  7. Yes I take wearing a mask very seriously and I am glad that you are too! And these coyotes seem indeed close! The first time <I saw some was in Death Valley when we visited the US for the first time

    • Tammy

Wow, I’m curious to hear how you ended up in Death Valley! It’s not the first place I think of when I think of someone visiting the US:-)

  8. Not a serious mask wearer but sometimes wear them shopping. I just hate them so much if this is how life is going to be I am turning into a hermit. Love the photos! Can’t wait to see what you thought of Hella and read The Only Good Indians because I am curious as to what you think cause for me it’s kind of dull.

  9. I go back to work in July, and I’m happy they are taking things seriously. Masks are mandatory if you can’t distance, no going into other people’s offices unless absolutely necessary. I wish everyone else was taking it seriously. I get out to go to the grocery store, and I feel like the only people in masks are me and some of the grocery employees.

    • Tammy

It’s mandatory here to wear masks in all public places, like grocery stores, which I’m very grateful for.

  10. I did enjoy Hella, but it was almost like it didn’t know what kind of book it wanted to be – I definitely felt the Outpost vibes, but at times it almost felt more like Semiosis or like it was trying to be an eco-sci-fi. A lot of details made it feel slow for me too, it took me so long to get through the middle parts! The last section felt more like an action-thriller, thankfully 😀

    • Tammy

Yeah the pacing was just odd. And the pages and pages of description were just tooo much.

  11. I’m still not going out much, but whenever I do, I definitely wear a mask. I’m still working from home but my office is reopening on a limited basis starting today so I’m curious to see if those who go in wear the masks as they’ve been mandated to do. We have a few who say they’re not going to so I’m waiting to see what happens when they show up without them or if they end up complying. Looking forward to your review for Bookish and the Beast!

I’ve noticed it’s the men in my office who “forget” to wear their masks the most. Ugh

  12. Look at these coyotes just chillin!
I’ve been wearing a mask whenever I go out. We’ve started to venture out more (went to Old Navy last weekend and to one of our favorite diners because they have a tent set up outside). I think because we’ve been going out more now my husband keeps forgetting to put his mask on when he gets out of the car. I had to chase him down the other day, he almost made it into the store without it!. One of the dangers of things getting back to ‘normal’ is that it can make people complacent. Even my boss at work took his off when he was talking to me in the office the other day. At least he was 6 feet away, but still. He took his off because I had mine off (I’m alone in that part of the office so I have it off unless someone walks in and I wasn’t quick enough to put it on as I was just getting off the phone when he walked in. :/ I’ve just been doing the best I can to protect myself, it’s all you can do right now. Stay safe out there, Tammy!

    • Tammy

I’ve noticed it’s mostly men who have trouble wearing their masks! At my job ALL the men are about 50/50 with it, and I make a point of always wearing mine when I get up from my desk. I was sort of hoping it would make them guilty but nope!

  13. I sometimes slip my mask off when no one is around when I’m in the office too–although technically we are supposed to wear ours any time we are in the building, even sitting at our desks. I was surprised the air conditioner technician wasn’t wearing a mask yesterday when he came to the house–but I suppose I shouldn’t be. Most people around here don’t seem to care about wearing face coverings or even social distancing. 🙁 At least that’s what if seems like.

I love the photos of the birds and coyotes. We have coyotes here too. They sometimes venture into the neighborhoods looking for food. It’s one of the reasons my cats are strictly indoor cats.

I hope you enjoy your current reads and have a great week, Tammy. Stay safe and well!

    • Tammy

Our coyotes come down looking for food too. It’s sad because they kill a lot of neighborhood cats and even small dogs. You have to be careful!

  14. What lovely photos! Your husband is clearly very talented at taking wildlife pics as they aren’t easy… I haven’t been out, much – but now some of the other shops are starting to open up, I think I am going to venture into town tomorrow for the first time since lockdown, as long as I feel well enough. I’ve bought myself a cloth mask that is really pretty to do so as I think we’re going to be wearing masks for a while and I want to feel good about it. Have a great week, Tammy:)

    • Tammy

I’ve bought some cloth masks as well, and found a brand I really like that I tie around my neck, so I can put it on and off easily. Hope you have a great week too!

  15. Those photos are amazing. Your husband is so good at taking pictures.
Masks – I don’t wear them outside much – but then I’m not really going anywhere beyond a walk with the dog and there’s never anyone around. I wear a mask if I’m going inside but, again, we’re doing and going to very places atm.
    Lynn 😀
