Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.
I think I’ve actually trained myself not to look for packages in the mail every day, lol. So maybe (hopefully) when book mail starts up again someday, it will be like Christmas! I have a couple of physical review books, but otherwise—once again—I have gone overboard with digital galleys. So let’s get started!
Physical books for review:
I was offered a copy of Opium and Absinthe by Lydia Kang, courtesy of Kaye Publicity, and it sounds really good. It’s historical YA fiction with a touch of fantasy. Isn’t that cover pretty?
I was seriously blown away when The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow showed up in the mail, and not just because book mail is rare these days, but because I’m so excited for this book! The Ten Thousand Doors of January was a favorite book last year, and I have a feeling this is going to be a favorite of 2020.
Finally, I was pitched Spectre Deep 6 by Jennifer Brody and Jules Rivera, a sci-fi graphic novel. I don’t usually read graphic novels, but the publisher offered to send a physical copy and it just arrived. It looks really good! I’m hoping to read and review soon since this is a May release.
Huge thanks to Kaye Pubicity, Lake Union Publishing, Redhook, and Turner Publishing:-D
Digital ARCs for review:
I was hoping for a physical copy of The Trials of Koli to go with The Book of Koli, but I’m thrilled to have a copy no matter what format it’s in. Cannot wait!
I snagged a couple of new Tor.com ARCs, which are both on my highly anticipated list. First up, Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark, an author I keep hearing amazing things about, and I’m glad I’m finally reading one of his books. And Over the Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker, who is the fictitious author first seen in Seanan McGuire’s Middlegame. If you haven’t read Middlegame yet, you can probably enjoy this novella, but I’ll let you know for sure after I read it. Leave it to McGuire to go meta on us and actually publish the fictitious book inside another of her novels!
I immediately grabbed Afterland by Lauren Beukes when it appeared on NetGalley. This book has gone through lots of delays, cover redesigns and even a name change, so I’m glad to see it’s finally got a scheduled release date. And I’ve read some comparisons to Stephen King so there’s no way I’m missing out!
The Last Uncharted Sky (The Risen Kingdoms #3) by Curtis Craddock. I’ve really enjoyed this fantasy/steampunk/Three Musketeers series, and I believe this is the conclusion.
Stormblood by Jeremy Szal. Jeremy contacted me directly and offered me a copy of his debut. I’m excited because I’m a U.S. blogger and this book is only slated to be released in the UK at the moment:-)
Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman. I was so happy to be approved for the next Alice Hoffman!
Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston. I featured this recently in a YA fantasy list, and so I just had to download it when I saw it on Edelweiss:-D
Finally, my good friend, author Brett Battles, sent me a copy of his latest, Insidious. This is the follow up to Night Man, which I read last year and LOVED. Brett writes really good thrillers, so if you’re in the mood for something fast paced with lots of humor and yes, even emotion, you need to check him out!
Big thanks to Brett, Jeremy Szal and Gollancz, Orbit Books, Tor.com, Mulholland Books, Tor, Simon & Schuster, and Balzer + Bray.
Purchased:
Goldsboro Books in the UK is my favorite specialty bookseller, but right now it’s almost impossible to get books shipped overseas. I’ve ordered at least four or five books from them and this is the only one that’s made it across the pond so far. Isn’t it pretty? Goldilocks by Laura Lam was the April selection for their GSFF Book Club, and I’m loving those orange sprayed edges, although this photo doesn’t show how bright orange they are. I’ve already read this, and even though it was sort of a mixed bag, I’m really happy to have this edition.
How many books! And they all seem great!! Opium and Absinthe in particular. I would wait for your review!
I’m very excited to dig into Opium and Absinthe:-)
I was beside myself when I received the NetGalley link for The Trials of Koli, and I can hardly wait to get to it as soon as I finish my current book: who would have thought that the wait would be so short? 😉

I was so excited too! If only my June pile weren’t so big…
A lot of these look and sounds fantastic so I can’t wait to read your reviews of them! Happy reading! ♥

Thanks Stephanie!
Because I’ve been thoroughly enjoying The Ten Thousand Doors of January I’d really like to read The Once and Future Witches, though I have to say I just don’t care for the title. The cover, yes, but not the title. Oh well. And I’m real curious to see where the story leads in The Trials of Koli. And though I’ve not read any of the series I was drawn to the cover for The Last Uncharted Sky. Really great range of books here!
Hopefully the title will make sense once we read it:-)
Excellent haul! I don’t have any of these books on my TBR, but I might, after reading your reviews.:-)

I hope I can convince you:-)
The Once and Future Witches sounds amazing! I can’t wait to see what you think of it.
I really want to read it soon:-)
These look like great reads! I hope you enjoy them!
Thanks Stacy:-)
Nice haul! The Once and Future Witches does look interesting, and I was huge excited to get an early copy of Afterland too. I may have to go back and check out that Curtis Craddock series.
I can’t wait to start Afterland, it’s getting really good reviews:-)
You’ve already got a copy of The Trials of Koli?! So cool! Happy reading, Tammy! 🙂
I’m pretty happy about it, I wish I didn’t have so many books to read between now and its release date!
Hope you enjoy these! That first cover is so pretty! And I love the orange sprayed edges of the last!

Sprayed edges are my downfall;-)
You got a book out of the UK? Impressive. You must put me in contact with your black market contacts.
Ha ha, it was a fluke! I’ve never been approved for a UK book on NetGalley before, so I was pretty surprised, lol.
I’ve been meaning to start the Curtis Craddock series, I have book 1! Maybe the fact that it’s finishing will be extra motivation….

Definitely easier to binge:-)
That Arc of “Witches” is hot!!! All over Twitter, ha!! Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Also, cool that you’re picking up a graphic novel. It looks interesting.
Yeah, the UK bloggers got their ARCs this week!
Look at the pretty books! 🙂
They do look pretty:-)
Last Uncharted Sky! Trials of Koli! Afterland! I’m so tempted by all these digital ARCs but my NetGalley TBR is cracking under the pressure right about now, most of these will probably be audio reads for me when they become available 😀
I’ve been TERRIBLE with digital ARCs since the bookmail stopped. Which is so stupid because it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up!
Nice haul. I’m so envious of that copy of The Once and Future Witches. I can’t wait to read your review for that one!
It was a nice surprise, that’s for sure. Hoping it’s as good as the cover:-)
Ooooh, so many good new hauls! 😀 I hope you love them all.

I’ve heard amazing things about the new Harrow book, I hope you enjoy it!
Cool, I am going to be reading it early for sure:-)
What a great haul! I haven’t managed to read the Book of Koli and already there is a 2nd book. Happy reading!
I know, those Koli books are all coming out very close together.
I’m looking forward to the Beukes and Hoffman very much.
Lynn 😀
