What’s On My Plate – May 2020

April seemed to go by in the blink of an eye, did anyone else feel like that? Despite the fact that most people are still staying at home, the month flew by for me. Many publishers are shuffling around their book releases for the next few months, in hopes that the stay at home orders will be lifted by summer, or at least those orders will be more relaxed. What this means is that many of the books I have for review that were supposed to be coming out in May have now been pushed to the summer months. So I technically only have seven May review books to read, but that’s OK, because I have another pile of fantasy books I’m going to tackle for Wyrd & Wonder! (more on that below) Let’s get started:

Books for Review:

Fractured Tide by Leslie Lutz. I may have already started this book when this post goes live. This is a YA thriller that takes place on an island, and may involve a killer sea creature of some sort? Not sure, but I know I’m very excited to start it.

Unreconciled (Donovan #4) by W. Michael Gear. I love this series to pieces, and I can’t believe we’re up to book #4 already. Also, I can’t believe I’ve read this series from the beginning and stuck with it! Ha ha.

Chaos Reigning (Consortium Rebellion #3) by Jessie Mihalik. Here’s another series I’m staying caught up with, simply because I adore it. If you love sci-fi romance, you NEED to be reading it too.

Goldilocks by Laura Lam. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by Lam, and I knew I didn’t want to miss this. I’m getting Do You Dream of Terra-Two? vibes from this, for some reason.

Network Effect (Murderbot #5) by Martha Wells. Well, this is shaping up to be the month of sequels! I’m still a little behind with this series, so bear with me while I catch up.

Westside Saints (Westside #2) by W.M. Akers. This is a fun historical fantasy series that takes place in 1920s New York. I really had fun with the first book, so it will be a pleasure to jump back into this world.

Out of Body by Jeffrey Ford. The reviews on Goodreads are all over the place, so I’m not sure what to expect!

On Tuesday I posted my plans for the all fantasy celebration, Wyrd & Wonder, so click that link for more information. You can also sign up if you’d like to participate yourself, all the links are in that post. But just to recap, I’m giving myself a pile of fantasy books that I’ve been meaning to read but just haven’t been able to get to, and I hope to read at least 2-3 of these:

I think every one of these is 500 pages or more, so lots of chonk going on here! In my Wyrd & Wonder post I go into more detail and I have all of these linked to Goodreads. I’m seriously open to opinions, so if you’ve read any of these, please let me know in the comments what I should read first!

A Note about Book Review Giveaway

So you might have noticed I haven’t been doing my Book Review Giveaway recently. I’ve decided to put it on hiatus, at least until I’m getting a full paycheck again. We’re struggling a little here because of my part time work status, so I’m trying to reign in unnecessary purchases. But never fear, it will be back eventually! And for those of you who have won any recent giveaways from me, but you haven’t received your book yet, they are on the way. I had several giveaways right in the midst of COVID-19 hitting and that’s definitely slowed down the process. If you were a winner and you have any questions about your book, please do not hesitate to contact me.

And that’s what my May looks like. Are we reading any of the same books? What book are you most looking forward to?

I’m using May as a catch up month too. I really should be getting ahead with June, but oh well…

  1. I am looking forward to your reviews because all the books seems intriguing! And I am so excited for Wyrd and Wonder to start because I have some books that I am dying to start reading!

Wyrd and Wonder is going to be a blast, and I’m so glad so many of my blogger friends are doing it!

  2. I just posted my Wyrd & Wonder sign up post today! I’m looking forward to focusing on something fun for the month since it is my birthday month and life is stupidly crazy right now. I started The Girl and the Stars but I can’t focus on it, so I don’t think it’s the right time to read that one even though it’s intriguing. I’m hoping to find my focus for some of the May releases or Wyrd books that I want to read. Good luck!

Ooh happy birthday month Liz! I’m really glad to hear you say that about The Girl and the Stars. I actually put it aside and picked up something else, but I am going to go back and finish it. I was hoping it would grab me more…

  3. I need to figure out some of these push back dates as well. I am about 100 pages into Goldilocks and have a tour spot Saturday (you asked about me doing so many – I find they keep me motivated and help me branch outside my comfort zone). I am absolutely loving it and since I don’t read a lot of sci-fi, I think it’s high praise that I’m so invested and interested.

I think April crawled by but I can see why it also seemed to go by quickly. Can’t wait for some of these reviews!

LOL I am going to have a Wyrd and Wonder giveaway, so I guess my declaration of no giveaways just went out the window, lol.

  4. April went by super fast for me too! I know I’m in the minority but I am loving this lockdown. I have been able to work from home and its super nice to hang out with my dog all day and have a ton of free time after work haha. And speaking of the lockdown, if you are struggling a bit, you should have told me instead of sending me a book! While I am super grateful and super excited to read it, you didn’t need to put strain on yourself! I would have understood! Is there a book you have been meaning to buy that you aren’t right now? I could send you something in return! This lockdown has been affecting everyone differently and we’ve got to help where we can <3

I honestly don’t mind the lockdown either:-) Although I did have to go back to work part time, with only a few of us in the office so it’s pretty safe, but I still have lots of extra time to read:-)

Oh no, seriously I’m so happy you won my giveaway! You’re so sweet, it’s not necessary to buy me a book, but I can’t tell you how good that makes me feel:-)

  5. Network Effect is one I’ll be reading, without a doubt, though maybe not in May. Lots of other interesting reads here. Can’t wait to see what you think of them.

    • Tammy

I probably won’t be reading Network Effect in May either. I still need to read the last two novellas:-)

  6. I preordered Fractured Tide so I’ll be reading that at some point, too! I’m actually a little happy some of the May releases got pushed back. Is that bad?! I feel like it freed up my time a little. 🙂

  7. It looks to me like you have a pretty amazing May shaping up as far as reading goes. This also reminds me that I still need to start the Murderbot series. I think that might be my next backlist read once I finish The Ten Thousands Doors of January.

  8. April did feel like it flew on by! But then again, time has literally lost all meaning for me these days! I had a May reading list lined up, but I think I’ll need to tweak it because of all the publishing delays.

  9. verushka

Rightaway, Goldilocks sticks in my head bc of the name of course and bc that cover looks nothing like i expect of a book with that name lol!

  10. April flew right by for me too! I am looking forward to your thoughts on Goldilocks, that one seems like such an interesting premise to me. Have a great May, Tammy!

  11. JonBob

I’m really looking forward to reading Goldilocks. And you know, I’ve never read any Leigh Bardugo, but I’m very keen to start.
