Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
More Fall 2020 books to add to your TBRs, #sorrynotsorry. At this point I’m living for Fall…
A thrilling new science fiction mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of the Donovan novels
Dr. Timothy Ryan, head of the military psychiatric unit at Grantham Barracks, is meeting a new patient, a woman known as “Prisoner Alpha.” As she is being transferred, they are attacked by assassins, barely escaping with their lives. One shooter vanishes, leaving behind a dead companion unlike anyone Ryan has ever seen.
But even more baffling is the puzzle of Alpha herself. She speaks in a strange tongue, and doodles in bars, dots, and little pictures like nothing Ryan has ever seen. Is she some sort of savant, or the most cunning spy he’s ever met?
Meanwhile, in Egypt, archaeologist Reid Farmer uncovers an 18th-Dynasty tomb that shouldn’t exist, filled with Mayan epigraphy, mathematics, and materials that didn’t exist 3,000 years ago. As a result of this discovery, Reid and forensic anthropologist Kilgore France–along with the sarcophagus they have found–are snatched away to a hidden lab to solve the enigma of a man lost in time.
As dark forces gather, Alpha makes an impossible escape from Grantham. Ryan quickly becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance, but with a team of unique allies, sets out to prove his innocence. Together, they must find Alpha and save Ryan before it is too late.
The Alpha Enigma by W. Michael Gear. Releases in November 2020 from DAW Books. Ooh, I had no idea this even existed, until I was perusing catalogs on Edelweiss over the weekend! You might recognize Gear as the author of the Donovan series that I’ve been reading and reviewing, so it makes me so happy to see he’s got yet another book coming out this year. This seems like an interesting mix of sci-fi and anthropology!
An eerie debut about a little boy who recovers from a sickness and inherits an imaginary friend who makes him do violent things…
Kids have imaginary friends. Rachel knows this. So when her young son, Billy, miraculously recovers from a horrible flu that has proven fatal for many, she thinks nothing of Delfy, his new invisible friend. After all, her family is healthy and that’s all that matters.
But soon Delfy is telling Billy what to do, and the boy is acting up and lashing out in ways he never has before. As Delfy’s influence is growing stranger and more sinister by the day, and rising tensions threaten to tear Rachel’s family apart, she clings to one purpose: to protect her children at any cost–even from themselves.
We Hear Voices is a mischievously gripping near-future horror novel that tests the fragility of family and the terrifying gray area between fear and love.
We Hear Voices by Evie Green. Releases in October 2020 from Berkley Books. OK, I’m hoping the whole “miraculously recovers from a horrible flu that has proven fatal for many” is simply a coincidence, and not the publisher rushing a COVID-19 story into production. But in any case, this sounds quite spooky!
For fans of Maggie Stiefvater and Neil Gaiman comes a stunning contemporary fantasy about a mysterious death, three friends who seek the truth, and the incredible power of our own desires.
Last summer, Link Miller drowned on dry land in the woods, miles from the nearest body of water. His death was ruled a weird accident, but Noemi Amato knows the truth: Link was killed. He told her so himself, because he’s been texting her from beyond the grave, warning her to keep away from the forest.
Amberlyn, Link’s sister, can’t shake the feeling that Noemi is hiding something, and Jonas, Noemi’s new housemate, can’t get past the walls that she has constructed around herself. Because Noemi has a dangerous secret even bigger than Link’s ghost…
Link drowned in an impossible lake that only she can find.
Now, if the three don’t work together to unravel the truth about what is happening in the woods, someone else may wind up dead. Set over the course of one heartbreaking, mystifying, and ultimately hopeful year, this remarkable debut heralds the arrival of an incredible new voice in young adult literature.
We Were Restless Things by Cole Nagamatsu. Releases in October 2020 from Sourcebooks Fire. I have to admit, I chose this book mostly because of this GORGEOUS cover. But now I’m sold on the story as well, which sounds like a really unique ghost story!
As a huge Egyptology nerd I would want to read The Alpha Enigma just for that cover alone! We Hear Voices already creeps me out after reading the synopsis. And I’m usually not a big fan of contemporary fantasy but I do have to admit that the cover of We Were Restless Things really is gorgeous!

Gear’s wife is also a writer and she just wrote a book revolving around ancient Egypt as well (which I need to read!)
The cover for We Were Restless Things looks so ethereal and accompanied by the blurb … wow, it gives me the shivers! Great choice, Tammy!
It definitely has that creepy vibe, both on the cover and the blurb:-)
NGL – I love the sound of all of these (not greedy at all) – but the Maggie Stiefvater and Neil Gaiman description for the third book definitely grabbed my attention.
Lynn 😀
That’s a hard comparison to ignore for sure:-)
Both books look wonderful, and the covers are marvelous! I’m looking forward to Martha Wells’ fifth book in her Murderbot series, out soon!

Ooh me too!
We Hear Voices sounds so good and I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who immediately thought COVID-19 upon reading the blurb, lol.
Ha ha, I’ve seen a lot of books with deadly viruses coming out lately, but I think writers are always using that as a plot point so maybe it’s just a coincidence:-)
We Were Restless Things sounds and looks amazing!
Isn’t the cover cool?
The Alpha Enigma sounds awesome. You had me at “18th-Dynasty tomb that shouldn’t exist, filled with Mayan epigraphy, mathematics, and materials.” 🙂

I agree, it should be good, and having read some other books of his, I am pretty confident about that:-)
I love imaginary friend stories!
Me too, they can be VERY creepy:-)
The cover of We Were Restless Things really is stunning, and also spooky, the longer you look at it. I’d probably give this one a try!
I know, the veins on the hand!!
I have to confess that as soon as I saw Michael W. Gear’s name, I added The Alpha Enigma to my “wanted” list even before reading what it was about: after the Donovan series, I think I would read anything he writes sight unseen… 😉
And thank you so much for bringing this book to my attention!!!!

I did the same, I saw Gear’s name and added it immediately!
They all sound so good! We Hear Voices really caught my attention.
My CWW
That cover definitely grabs you:-)
Those all sound pretty cool! 🙂
I have to agree;-)
I saw The Alpha Enigma and didn’t realize who wrote it. So you just added 3 books to my TBR! Arrrggghhh!
Ha ha, hey we all need three new books on our TBR right?
I would really like to try W. Michael Gear one of these days. Each of his books sounds very interesting. And like you, I find the anthropology slant to it intriguing.
He’s really good, and I’m looking forward to this new one, which sounds like it might develop into a series.
The last two seem a bit too creepy for my taste – but W. Michael Gear is an author I want to read as his books look like they might be my kind of thing! Thank you for the heads-up, Tammy:))
Gear is really good, and I think you’d love his Donovan series, which is a really good space colonization story:-)
All of these are awesome covers, and I think I read the first author when he was doing like a prehistoric human type of story? Thanks for sharing, have to add to my TBR now! You can check out my post this week in the link below!

I’m not sure I read that one, but now I’m curious:-)
I do hope fall will be better… It’s been such a year so far. At least there are some great books out there to read. The Alpha Enigma does sound awesome. Definitely something to look forward to. We Were Restless Things sounds irresistible. And that cover! I hope you get a chance to read all of these and love them when you do. Stay safe and well.
I think we all want something to look forward to, that’s the problem with life right now!
I was surprised when I heard about that one by Gear and this was before I saw a cover or description so I had wondered if it might have been related to Donovan. – even though it’s not, I’m still definitely on board for a new sci-fi mystery!
Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum recently posted…Book Review: The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey
I’m curious to see what he does outside of the Donovan world:-)
As usual, you came up with a trio of books I’ve never even heard of! Gear’s new one sounds pretty good, but I especially love the cover on that last one!
Isn’t that cover amazing? I honestly am mesmerized by it:-)
The Alpha Enigma sounds incredible! I’m always looking for books set in Egypt.
You don’t see a lot of Egypt-centric stories, so it’s nice to know someone is writing them:-)
The Alpha Enigma seems especially intriguing. There was a time when I was really into Egyptology so I admit it’s appealing to me for that reason LOL. Great picks this week!
I discovered The Alpha Enigma the very same way! Wow, Edelweiss, what a bad influence you are on our TBRs. xD I haven’t read the Donovan series yet (even though I want to), but I definitely think I’m gonna pick this one up! I managed to get an ARC of We Were Restless Things, and I’m so excited for it! I clicked Request the moment I saw it pop up, because yes, the cover’s gorgeous, but this book sounds sooo good! I’m actually surprised that I knew about two out of three of your books this week. That doesn’t happen very often. xD For once, I can’t blame you for piling onto my TBR, because … I kind of did it to myself. Shucks.
