Future Fiction #65: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

We’re all stuck at home, so let’s do what we book lovers do best: add more books to our TBRs!

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever―and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Releases in October 2020 from Tor Books. I have to admit when I first saw this cover revealed, I was disappointed. It actually looks like a place holder cover. But since then it’s grown on me, and I have a feeling when you read the story it’s going to make more sense. In any case, it goes without saying that I am so freaking excited for a new V.E. Schwab book!

The critically acclaimed author of the “bold, innovating, and thrilling” (Stephen King) novel The Twenty-Year Death and the “brilliant” (Booklist, starred review) novel Barren Cove returns with a dark and compelling mystery set in the near future.

Decimated by plague, the human population is now a minority. Robots—complex AIs almost indistinguishable from humans—are the ruling majority. Nine months ago, in a controversial move, the robot government opened a series of preserves, designated areas where humans can choose to live without robot interference. Now the preserves face their first challenge: someone has been murdered.

Chief of Police Jesse Laughton on the SoCar Preserve is assigned to the case. He fears the factions that were opposed to the preserves will use the crime as evidence that the new system does not work. As he digs for information, robots in the outside world start turning up dead from bad drug-like programs that may have originated on SoCar land. And when Laughton learns his murder victim was a hacker who wrote drug-programs, it appears that the two cases might be linked. Soon, it’s clear that the entire preserve system is in danger of collapsing. Laughton’s former partner, a robot named Kir, arrives to assist on the case, and they soon uncover shocking secrets revealing that life on the preserve is not as peaceful as its human residents claim. But in order to protect humanity’s new way of life, Laughton must solve this murder before it’s too late.

The Preserve is a fresh and futuristic mystery that is perfect for fans of Westworld and Blade Runner.

The Preserve by Ariel S. Winter. Releases in November 2020 from Atria/Emily Bestler Books. Lately I’ve been adding books to my TBR from publishers I don’t usually pay attention to, and obviously that’s a mistake because I might have missed out on this gem! Doesn’t this sound great, and do you love this cover as much as I do? Although perhaps this story hits a little too close to home right now…

A coven of queer witches at an elite women’s college employ their powers to exact revenge on the frat boy warlocks who are using magic to cover up sexual assault on campus.

When Lee, a first-year college student, is sexually assaulted by a frat boy on a neighbouring campus, she’s quickly disillusioned by the lack of recourse. Lost, she turns to her Gender Studies professor who, in turn, recruits her to form a coven with three classmates.

Suddenly in possession of very real magic, Lee and her coven set out to use their powers to hex the men who are committing, and covering up, sexual assault. However, their exploits rapidly escalate into vigilante justice and Lee’s thirst for revenge on her rapist causes things to spiral out of control, pitting witch against witch and begging the question: how far should you go in order to heal?

Consensual Hex by Amanda Harlowe. Releases in October 2020 from Grand Central Publishing. This sounds promising, and this book gets bonus points for the awesome title and cover! (Sorry about the snakes, Barb!)

Preordered Consensual Hex INSTANTLY. My gods, that’s an amazing premise! How do you always find the coolest books?!

    • Tammy

I think they all sound different as well. I love finding books that don’t feel like the same old thing.

I didn’t see the cover of Preserve that way, but now that you mentioned it, you’re right:-)

  2. Good Lord Booksnake had babies! Seriously I don’t need that cover! But the book sounds good. Like you, I expected more from the V.E. Schwab cover but the synopsis is great. I saw some people talking that it may be foiled which would make it pop more. I actually just got a digital arc of Preserve.

I still can’t get over Consensual Hex! Sssssstay sssssafe 🙂

It does sound good. She’s really good, although I’m not that fond of her YA books for some reason. But this one is adult!

  3. Me, whenever I see an email notification about one of your blog posts. “Don’t read it, don’t look, don’t click on it, you know you’ll end up TBRing everything Tammy recommends. Look away now! LOOK AWAY”

I didn’t look away, and now I’ve spent the last 20 minutes TBRing books….

I can’t believe it! I know you like middle grade, she has a really good (I’ve heard) MG series right now.

  4. Sarah

Oh I like the sound of The Preserve. And I really like the creepy look of the cover.

I have actually never read Schwab, but I have to admit, the blurb on the first book has me wondering if I should give her a try. Great picks this week!

    • Tammy

I really enjoy Schwab’s adult books. I’m not so crazy about her YA and MG, but Vicious is still one of my all time favorites:-)

  5. Oooh do you know if The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is going to be a standalone or part of a series? I sounds awesome! (But I don’t want to start another unfinished series haha)

    • Tammy

I think it’s a standalone? There’s nothing on GR that says it’s a series. I’m with you, I have so many unfinished series already!

  6. I’m not overly moved by the cover, but I do really like the description of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Could be an entertaining read, and I’ve not yet tried this author, so I’d be up for it.
