Over-Booked [117] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I had to travel out of town last weekend for a funeral, so it’s been three weeks since my last book haul post, which is why I have so much to share with you today. Hope everyone is staying safe in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s getting real. Both my kids’ colleges have shut down and are finishing out the semester with online classes, and it’s nearly impossible to even find food in the grocery store. But let’s get our minds off the bad stuff for now and take a look at some books!

Physical books for review:

Lots of exciting books to share! First up a surprise from Orbit Books, We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson. Orbit is known for finding excellent self published books and bringing them to a wider audience, and here’s their latest. This looks really good and has lots of great reviews.

In the category of “I never thought I’d get a copy of this book” comes The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. This is a lovely finished hardcover and I couldn’t be happier!

And huge thanks to Redhook for a finished copy of The Age of Witches by Louisa Morgan. This is my third book by this author and I’m excited to jump back into her fascinating world, a blend of history and witchcraft.

I can’t believe this, but I recently won two Goodreads giveaways! I guess after years of not winning, someone is taking pity on me, lol. First, I was super excited to win an ARC of The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey. Gailey has been on fire lately in the publishing department, and I can’t believe they have ANOTHER book coming out! The cover hasn’t been revealed yet so it’s just a plain cover on this ARC, but I can’t wait. You guys, this book doesn’t come out until February 2021! Isn’t that crazy?

I’m also very happy to have Westside Saints by W.M. Akers in my hands. I really enjoyed Westside last year, so it should be fun to get back into Akers’ cool fantasy world.

I didn’t even know about this book when it showed up in the mail: The Living Dead by George A. Romero & Daniel Kraus. Kraus finishes up this uncompleted manuscript of Romero’s and I think this sounds interesting!

Huge thanks to Orbit Books, Quirk Books, Redhook, Tor, and Harper Voyager:-D

A cool surprise from Random Penguin House, A Phoenix First Must Burn edited by Patrice Caldwell. This is a short story anthology with the tagline “stories of Black girl magic.” I’ve seen this all over the place and I’m excited to have a copy.

Thanks to 47North for a finished copy of Now, Then and Everywhen by Rysa Walker. I’m waiting to read a few reviews before I decide whether to read it or not, especially since my April TBR is out of control.

I have a blog tour stop for Cursed: An Anthology of Dark Fairy Tales edited by Marie O’Regan on Monday, and in addition to a few mini reviews from the collection, I’ll be giving away two copies of the book, so please stop by!

Big thanks to Tor for the surprise copy of The Relentless Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal, the third book in her Lady Astronaut series. I’m sad I haven’t started this series yet, but maybe this will push me to do so!

Another surprise, this time from Ace Books, is American Demon by Kim Harrison. This looks like a spin-off from her popular The Hollows series, which I have not read. I’m wondering if this can be read as a standalone if you haven’t read the other books, does anyone know?

Last but not least in the physical pile is Re-Coil by J.T. Nicholas. I still have a giveaway going on for this book if you live in the US, UK, Canada or Europe, and there aren’t very many entries right now, so you have a good chance of winning, check it out here!

Big thanks to 47North, Titan Books, Viking, Tor Books and Ace Books!

Digital books for review:

It took forever to get approved for Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, but I’m relieved to finally have a copy on my Kindle. I can’t wait to read it!

I absolutely loved Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven, and it seems like we’ve been waiting forever for the next book in the series. Dragon Unleashed is a standalone, I believe.

I really enjoyed Silver in the Wood, and I’m looking forward to the second book in this duology, Drowned Country by Emily Tesh.

I recently featured the cover reveal for The Hive Queen by Robin Kirk, and she was kind enough to send a copy my way!

Thanks to Del Rey, Ace, Tor.com and Robin Kirk!

And those are my new books! Let me know if you plan to read any of these too:-D

I always meant to read We Ride the Storm before its rerelease, but never got to it. Honestly, doubt I’ll get to it this time around, so I hope you like it! And everything gets less crazy! Things are just reaching us in my corner of the world now and… well. I hope it gets better!

  2. We Ride the Storm looks really good – I will have to check it out:). No one else manages to haul so many books that have me drooling with desire… A Kim Harrison!! Spinoff from The Hollows series!!!! I LOVED that series and read them all. So that sound awesome. But there are others I want, too… Have a fabulous reading week, Tammy:). Hopefully you can tuck into a book and keep the ever-uglier real-life situation at bay.

I have been struggling to focus on reading, what with all the news coming in so fast and furious, but at least we readers have something to do to pass the time:-)

  3. OOO I’m so envious that you got a copy of The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires!!! Can’t wait to read your thoughts on it. It sounds fabulous.

  4. I’m loving your haul! Many of these will be added to my list. They just announced school closings here last night and people are panicking. It’s been impossible to find toilet paper around here and when a store gets some in people go crazy grabbing it. Luckily, I had just updated my hurricane preparedness stash so I’m all set if things get really crazy.

Yeah, the whole toilet paper thing is crazy here too! I mean it’s like everyone woke up one day and realized they didn’t have any?? lol

  5. Sarah

Omg The Relentless Moon- I am so jealous!! I can’t wait for this book even though I wasn’t as excited about The Fated Sky. Just love those characters. The super super new Sarah Gailey one looks awesome too!

    • Tammy

It’s funny because I read a new Sarah Gailey last month, I’m reading one now, and they has ANOTHER book coming out early next year. I wish I had that much energy!

  6. Marian Parsons

I have a copy of Now, Then, and Every When. I haven’t read any of the other books in that universe which might have made this one more interesting. I’ve read about a third of it and it’s fine? But I’ve gone off to read other things and I’m not sure I’ll get back to it for a while.

Best wishes for safely riding out the weirdness.

    • Tammy

Ha ha I know what you mean! At least if we’re stuck at home, we know how to pass the time:-)

  7. Ooh, you got the new Lady Astronaut book! The first book in the series is EXCELLENT, and I think I need to re-read #2 before the new one comes out. I’m really looking forward to the new Grady Hendrix book too!

    • Tammy

The Grady Hendrix is definitely in my top three can’t wait books of the year, that’s how excited about it I am:-)

  8. I heard the colleges were shutting down! My daughter’s elementary school (actually, the whole district and almost the entire state) have shut down now, too, for at least the next three weeks.

You’ve got a lot of gorgeous physical copies! I’ll be on the blog tour for Cursed, too, and I’m really looking forward to it. 😀 I’ll be interested to see which stories are your favorites. 😉 I’ve got Drowned Country, too, and I’m excited. It looks fabulous!

  9. Oh lots of pretties! I got Dragon Unleashed . I enjoyed the first Lady Astronaut book very much on audio; it was narrated by the author which was great. I want to get American Demon. I have read the whole series so I’m excited to see what the next adventures will be. I won’t really know until I’ve read it if I think it can be a starting point For me, I’m OCD and I’d want the history. Have a lovely week and enjoy your new reads!

  10. I was just in the grocery store today too and they were pretty cleaned out. Kinda scary. At least no one was fighting over the last remaining scraps yet lol. Although I shouldn’t joke probably!

    Anyway stay safe!!!

The author line up for that anthology looks pretty fabulous!

We actually went to the store today and things are much calmer. I guess people are realizing that the stores are going to keep restocking and they don’t need to panic!

  11. Looks like your calls to Quirk Books were actually answered! I’m so happy you got the Grady Hendrix book because I know you were dying for it! I also got a copy of A Phoenix First Must Burn, though I guess I should have taken a closer look because I didn’t realize it was an anthology :\

    • Tammy

I’m glad you loved We Ride the Storm, I’m excited to see what everyone is talking about:-)

  12. What a great haul. I can’t wait to read the Kim Harrison book. I think I need to read the last two in the series yet but I’m so excited to see her carry on. Jenks is one of the best sidekicks ever and if you haven’t read this series then you’re missing out. But you’re also really behind because I think there’s like 10 or 11 out so far. I have an digital arc of The Living Dead and am excited for it as well.

  13. So many good books! The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is one of my most highly anticipated books releasing this year as I love Grady Hendrix and I hope you will love it! Anything vampires is always perfect for me. I am also eagerly anticipating Mexican Gothic ;.; Such a good haul here 😀
