What’s On My Plate – January 2020

Welcome to the new decade! Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope you’re having a relaxing day with friends and family, or maybe you’re simply enjoying a quiet day of reading! It’s time to look ahead at my plans for the coming month, per usual. I’m happy to say I’ve already read two of my January titles and have started on a third, so at least I’m starting the year off a little bit ahead:-D Here are the books I’m hoping to read this month:

January is typically a heavy “new release” month, and this year is no different. There are plenty of January titles that aren’t on this list, but you have to start saying “no” at some point, right? Two of my most highly anticipated books this month are A Longer Fall by Charlaine Harris, the second book in her Gunnie Rose series, which I’m loving, and The God Game by Danny Tobey, which is getting awesome early reviews! I’m also very excited about The Shadow Saint by Gareth Hanrahan, although my review copy hasn’t shown up yet so I’m not sure when I’ll be reading it.

I have review copies for three Tor.com novellas this month. Prosper’s Demon by K.J. Parker and Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi both have high reviews on Goodreads already. And I’ve already read Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire, her 5th book in the Wayward Children series! Expect a review of it up tomorrow.

I’ve also already read Chosen by Kiersten White, the second book in her Buffyverse series! I had a blast with it, and my review will be up next week.

I’ll be listening to my first audio book this month, The Queen’s Road by R.S. Belcher. I’ve actually already listened to the first chapter, but I’m not sure how to track notes on audio books. Anyone out there have a system they like?

The Bard’s Blade by Brian D. Anderson has been garnering stellar reviews already! I believe this book was previously self-published, so I’m very curious to read it.

The Will and the Wilds by Charlie N. Holmberg will be the second book I’ve read by this author. I enjoyed the first book of hers I read but I did some issues with it. I’m hoping this works a little better for me.

Highfire by Eoin Colfer was a spur-of-the-moment request, but I’ve actually been hearing really good things about it.

And finally, I received a surprise copy of Burn the Dark by S.A. Hunt in the mail, and although I featured this on a Future Fiction last year, I just had too many January books to justify requesting it. But now that I have a copy anyway, I may try to get to it!

And don’t be surprised if I throw some other books into the mix. I’m still trying to catch up on a few 2019 review books, and I definitely want to get started on my February review books this month as well. Let me know what your most anticipated January reads are:-D

  1. That’s so awesome! So many of these books I’d like to check out like Chosen by Kiersten White. I haven’t read Slayer yet either.

    Happy New Year Tammy!

  2. Prosper’s Demon and Riot Baby look so intriguing! And can’t wait to see what you thought of Come Tumbling Down, I’m really anticipating it but haven’t seen many reviews yet.
    Happy New Year!

  3. Excited to hear you’re interested in reading The Bard’s Blade. I’ve been an indie author for many years, and this is my first foray into traditional publishing – loving Tor and my editor Lindsey! This particular book was never self-published, but I have about 17 others that were. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as did writing it.

  4. Looks like you have a lot of delicious stuff on your plate, hehe 😉
I need to check a few of the titles you listed, they might be added on mine as well.
Thanks for this, and Happy New Year! 😀

  5. Another great mix here, Tammy. I’d like to try Gareth Hanrahan’s first book in that series, and I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of The God Game, Prosper’s Demon and The Bard’s Blade. For myself I want to finish reading The Peripheral by William Gibson, which I’m absolutely loving so far, and The Book of Koli by S.C. Emmett, which I recently received through a goodreads giveaway.

How exciting about The Book of Koli! Congrats on your win. It’s one of my most highly anticipated books of the year:-)

  6. It’s always nice to be head. 🙂 I’m really excited about The Shadow Saint as well, though I’m also waiting on my review copy–hopefully soon! Prosper’s Demon was an odd one, but I love Parker’s narrative voice, it’s always so distinct in his books. I need to catch up on the Wayward Children series, but I’m still so excited for the new one. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Highfire, and although I’m excited for it, I’m honestly a bit skeptical by how weird the premise sounds!

Highfire is definitely a risk for me. Especially since the author has mostly done YA/Middlegrade in the past. We shall see…

  7. Ooh, good stuff! I’m most excited for the new Wayward Children book, and I finally picked up a copy of Slayer, so if I enjoy it, I’m sure I’ll be looking for #2 pretty soon afterward. Enjoy your January reads!

  8. Oh yes, January releases are hitting me like a ton of bricks! I have not been as good with getting a head start on 2020 releases, so I’m starting from behind this year, yikes! And I’ve not really explored the Audible app ‘s features, but I think they have some form of note tracking? I’ll have to do some research into it, I usually just use it as a bookmark function.

Yeah, January, ugh! Even starting off a little ahead I can tell I’m going to fall behind eventually, lol.

  9. I saw the God Game a few days ago, and added it to my list immediately 😀 I haven’t dared look around too much to see new releases, because i’m trying to read books i already own. I have plenty! Never enough tho…

    • Tammy

The God Game is really fun and suspenseful! I have no idea what’s going on, but I hope I find out soon.

  10. I hope you will be able to enjoy all of these reads this month! I already see a review up for Come Tumbling Down so I already know you have read this one 🙂 Will look out for your thoughts x

I’m jealous of how much you are able to get read in just a month! I’m really excited for The God Game too. I’m in the middle of something now, but I think I’ll tackle that one next. Good luck getting through this massive TBR!

I won’t be able to read all of these, I wish!! This is more of a “menu” and I’m sure some will go unread.
