Over-Booked [111] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been a month since my last book haul post, where did the time go? I keep trying to post my book hauls at least twice a month, otherwise it becomes overwhelming. Hopefully in 2020 I can do better! In any case, I have a great mix of books received for review, purchases, a giveaway win and maybe a Kickstarter fulfillment? Let’s find out!

Physical books for review:

The Will and the Wilds by Charlie N. Holmberg. This will be my second book by Holmberg, and even though I didn’t love Smoke & Summons, this sounds more my taste. This comes out in January, so I’ll be reading it soon.

Flyaway by Kathleen Jennings. This little Tor.com novella is so pretty! Jennings is also an artist and she actually did the beautiful cover art, and maybe the interior illustrations as well.

Bent Heavens by Daniel Kraus. This sounds like a really fun horror/sci-fi mash-up, and I’m looking forward to reading it in February, closer to the release date.

Titan’s Day by Dan Stout. I was SO excited when this arrived in the mail, I was not expecting it! This is the sequel to one of my favorite books of 2019, Titanshade. I can’t wait to read it!

Otaku by Chris Kluwe. I don’t know much about this book or the author, other than the author is also a football player?? I’m a little confused by that. Football and books just don’t go together, lol! But I’m intrigued by this book, I love the cover, and it sounds pretty good!

Stormsong by C.L. Polk. This is the sequel to Witchmark, which I have yet to read. But now that I have the second book, I’m going to track down a copy before this is released. Witchmark just won the World Fantasy Award so I’m very excited!

Big thanks to 47North and Wunderkind PR, Tor.com, Kaye Publicity and Henry Holt & Co, DAW Books, and Tor:-D

Miracles & Marvels by Tim Pratt. This was a Kickstarter that I backed, I think on the last day, and I’m very happy I got in on it. I’ve never read anything by Tim Pratt but I’ve heard lots of good things!

Gravity of a Distant Sun by R.E. Stearns. This is the third book in Stearns’ Shieldrunner Pirates series, and I’m sorry to say I haven’t started it, although I do have a copy of Barbary Station in a pile somewhere. Anyone out there reading this series?

Stone Clock by Andrew Bannister. This is another third book in a series, the Spin Trilogy. Again, I haven’t started this series, so I doubt I’ll be able to slot this into my schedule.

Dead Endless by David Galanter. This is the 6th book in the Star Trek Discovery series. I received a couple of these books a few months ago but haven’t started the series yet. I think I would really enjoy these if I had time!

Big thanks to Gallery/Saga Press, Tor Books and Gallery:-D

Purchases/Giveaway wins

I ordered this GORGEOUS little chap book, Everything is Beautiful and Nothing Bad Can Ever Happen Here by Michael Wehunt, from a small press called Nightscape Press. Their limited edition chapbooks are NOT cheap, but they donate a percentage to a good cause, which I love to support. This particular book’s donations are going to the Southern Poverty Law Center. I am planning on reading this story and writing a review soon, because I really want to share some photos of the interior artwork. I am BLOWN AWAY by how beautiful this is! It’s totally worth every penny of the $30 I paid. Once this print run is sold out, it’s gone, so if you love collecting really special books, I urge you to go to the link and check it out. I will definitely be buying more books from this publisher:-D

I won a giveaway! Big thanks to Laura from fuonlyknew for selecting me as the winner of Two Bites Too Many by Debra H. Goldstein. I won this back in October but I neglected to share it. It looks so cute, and I hope to read it soon. Thank you Laura!

A couple of Goldsboro book preorders showed up recently, and I’m excited for both! First, The Black Hawks by David Wragg. I’ve seen a couple of UK bloggers review this and it sounds really good. I don’t think it has a US publisher yet (but I could be wrong), so I decided to buy the signed limited edition. I also bought The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I couldn’t resist, this edition is so gorgeous! You can’t see in the photo but it has blue sprayed edges.

And because I didn’t have review copies, of course I had to buy Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black. My goal is to read both this month, wish me luck!

Digital books for review:

Before I start, I want to mention that these are all past Future Fiction picks! Go me for only requesting books I’m super excited for:-D

When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey. This is a YA book, and even though I’ve been having a beast of a time finding YA that I really like, I’ve put Gailey on my “must read” list, so there you go. I think this sounds like fun!

A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers. Redhook has been publishing really solid fiction lately, so I’m always open to checking out their upcoming releases.

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha. This just popped up as an Edelweiss download, and I pushed that button so fast! I think this story has a lot of potential.

Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This is one of two books by Moreno-Garcia coming out next year. Boy she is really prolific these days! Untamed Shore veers off her usual speculative fiction into the thriller/mystery genre, and I’m very excited to see what she does.

The Last Human by Zack Jordan. Lots of buzz surrounding this book already, at least I’ve seen a lot of bloggers talking about it. Can’t wait!

Big thanks to Simon Pulse, Redhook, Tor Books, Agora Books & Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Del Rey Books!

And that’s my haul this week! I’d love to know if you are planning on reading any of these books:-D

  1. I started Barbary Station a while back and ended up setting it aside, but it definitely had potential! I should go back to that one and try it again, I didn’t know book three was on the way!

Flyaway is definitely one of my favorite recent covers. I especially love that it’s a human heart in the center:-)

  2. Oh my goodness! WHAT a haul, Tammy. As ever, I’m green with envy. I haven’t read the Stearns or Bannister series, but love the look of them both. Hoping you have a wonderful month’s reading, Tammy:))

  3. Will

I can’t wait to read The Last Human! And also hear your thoughts on the Starless Sea! Oh, and Chris Kluwe was a football player. WAS. He retired. You can totally write books when you retire, I guess.

  4. LOL I am finally finishing up Titanshade after having the book as “currently reading” since early summer! It’s not that it wasn’t capturing my interest, in fact it’s quite the opposite – I’m really liking what I’m reading, but since this is my “print read” I just haven’t had time to sit down with the book. Anyway, should be done this weekend, just in time because an ARC of Titan’s Day arrived for me too, such an awesome cover!

  5. I’ve seen a couple of these covers before but most are new to me. That’s one of the things I love about these posts: exposure to so many new, and potentially great, books.

  6. If I end up loving Starless Sea, I’m gonna try to get that edition too because it is gorgeous!
I have my fingers crossed that I get an ARC of Bent Heavens. I’ve wanted to try a book by Kraus ever since reading The Shape of Water, which he cowrote with Guillermo del Toro.

    • Tammy

I didn’t make that connection between Daniel Kraus and Guillermo del Toro, very cool! Now I’m even more excited to read Bent Heavens:-)

  7. Sarah

I haven’t heard of Bent Heavens before but I’m definitely adding it! I love the cover – so creepy! I’m excited to see what you think of Ninth House and The Starless Sea (both of which reviews seem very mixed on). Untamed Shore looks really cool too. Awesome haul.

    • Tammy

For some reason I’m often drawn to books with mixed reviews. Not sure why, but Ninth House is one I want to try to read by the end of the month.

  8. And my TBR continues to grow. I’m really curious about the book by the football player. I love football so see, that alone makes me want to read it. Marketing at its best! I bet you were thrilled with the Dan Stroud sequel. Can’t wait for your thoughts. So I can’t help it, every time I see one of the covers, the cop reminds me of the guy who used to be in Law & Order SVU and who is now in all the Allstate Mayhem commercials. I swear, once I get something in my head, it doesn’t leave!
