Future Fiction #49: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I went an entire month without sharing any fantasy titles, and now I’ve got a backlog of them to share, lol. Here are the first three I’m excited about!

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in  June 2020 from Del Rey. I’ve been waiting for this cover to be revealed for a while, and of course it was revealed in November, when I couldn’t share it because of SciFiMonth. Isn’t this lovely? And the story sounds amazing. I love how each of her books is different from the last, and I will read everything Silvia writes, so this is a no-brainer for me. Can’t wait!

The Three Musketeers meets Jules Verne in Curtis Craddock’s concluding novel in the critically-acclaimed high fantasy Risen Kingdoms series, an engrossing tale of courtly intrigue and breathtaking magic.

Isabelle and Jean-Claude undertake an airship expedition to recover a fabled treasure and claim a hitherto undiscovered craton for l’Empire Celeste. But Isabelle, as a result from a previous attack that tried to subsume her body and soul, suffers from increasingly disturbing and disruptive hallucinations. Disasters are compounded when the ship is sabotaged by an enemy agent, and Jean-Claude is seperated from the expedition.

In a race against time, Isabelle must figure out how to ward off her ailment before it destroys her and reunite with Jean-Claude to seek the fabled treasure as ancient secrets and a royal conspiracry threaten to undo the entire realm.

The Last Uncharted Sky (The Risen Kingdoms #3) by Curtis Craddock. Releases in August 2020 from Tor Books. I really love this series, and I was thrilled to spot this cover for book #3. It’s unclear whether this is the final book or not, but in any case I shall be eagerly awaiting this Three Musketeers – Steampunk mashup!

The first book in a new YA fantasy duology from a bestselling genre-expanding master, about a teenager who embarks on a quest to protect the world from an alternate universe where magic abounds and history has been rewritten.

After Jonathan Lambshead’s elusive grandfather dies, the recently orphaned teenager inherits the family mansion—and its contents. Jonathan soon discovers that the mansion’s basement holds more than just oddities: three doors serve as portals, with one leading to an alt-Earth called Aurora, where magic abounds, history has been re-written, and an occult dictator called Aleister Crowley leads an army pillaging alt-Europe. Jonathan learns of his destiny as a member of The Order, a secret society devoted to keeping our world separate from Aurora, and embarks on an epic quest to protect Earth from Crowley’s dark magic.

Over the course of the duology, Jonathan uncovers more of the worlds outside of our own, the magic that permeates them, his own destiny, and the secrets buried in his family history.

A Peculiar Peril (Misadventures of Jonathan Lambshead #1) by Jeff VanderMeer. Releases in July 2020 from Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Hey, Jeff VanderMeer does YA! This sounds very interesting, and it’s quite a departure from his recent science fiction books. I love this cover to pieces!

  1. Mexican Gothic sounds so good! I haven’t read anything by this author yet but might keep a lookout for this one.
The Curtis Craddock book sounds great too but I’d have to start at the beginning of the series.

  2. Well you know Mexican Gothic is already on my radar. I’m not sure VanderMeer is for me. I’ll wait to see some reviews of that one. I enjoyed your sci-fi picks but I do bet you have some catching up to do!

I’m not having great luck with Dead Astronauts at the moment so I’m a little wary of this new one. But I am curious to see how he handles YA.

  3. The Captain

ARRRRR!!! I didn’t know that Silvia Moreno-Garcia has TWO books coming out next year!! I didn’t read the blurb for either one because I will read anything she writes at this point. And I already have a copy of untamed shore. I loved the first Curtis Craddock book and half to read the second and now the third. The new year isn’t here yet and I be so excited for all the titles on me list. Love these posts.
    x The Captain

Some awesome looking and sounding books up there. I have to admit, after my experience with Dead Astronauts, I’m a lot less eager about A Peculiar Peril. I’ll probably wait until I can sample it or get it from a library.

I wouldn’t even blame you for DNFing. You get so many things for review anyway. I think it’s one of those that if you aren’t liking it by the time you finish the first 50 pages or so- it’s safe to quit. It doesn’t get much better

  5. I’ve been wanting to try something by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Her books always sound very interesting. Not sure which I’d try first.
