Sci Fi Month 2019 – Engage! #SciFiMonth

I can’t believe it’s time for another rousing edition of SciFiMonth! November really is one of my favorite months on the blog, and it’s even more fun because so many bloggers I know are also joining in. This is my SIXTH year participating in SciFiMonth (or SciFi November as it used to be called), and today I’m highlighting my plans for the month (subject to change, of course!). If you aren’t familiar with this event and want to learn more, check out our wonderful SciFiMonth hosts, imyril from onemore.org and Lisa from Dear Geek Place.

My plans are very similar to previous years, because I’ve found these posts work well for me. In addition to the SF books I hope to read, I also have a bunch of November review books (non SF) that I need to try to read as well. So as much as I’d like to devote the entire month to SF, that just isn’t going to work. (Stay tuned tomorrow for my What’s On My Plate post for November to see what else I’m reading!)

But today is all about science fiction. Here’s what you can expect to find on the blog this month:

The Books:

This is a pile of SF books I’ll be pulling from. I won’t get to all of them, but based on my mood I have a fantastic bunch to pick and choose from:

I’ve been threatening for a long time to binge read The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and hopefully this is the year I make that happen. Wish me luck!

Always North by Vicki Jarrett is a book from Unsung Stories, a small publisher that produces high quality SFF. The story takes place in the Arctic, and that alone is enough to get me excited!

Gamechanger by L.X. Beckett. I received an unsolicited review copy of this book from Tor, and I really hope I can squeeze this in. Looks like a perfect story for SciFiMonth!

How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason. This is a review book that I should have read last month, but it actually works better as a SciFiMonth read.

The Rosewater Redemption by Tade Thompson. This is the third book in Thompson’s Wormwood Trilogy, and I’m anxious to see how he’s going to wrap things up!

Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill is one of my Rewind Challenge books. And yes, I’ve completely failed with this self-imposed challenge so far! Maybe I can knock at least one off the list this month…

Interference by Sue Burke is an October release I just haven’t had time to fit in. But it would be perfect for this month if I can get to it.

Aurora Blazing by Jessie Mihalik is also an October release. I might need to spice things up with some SciFiRomance!

Finally, I’d love to get a jump on some December releases, and Dead Astronauts by Jeff VanderMeer just might be that book.

Top Ten Lists, Future Fiction picks & Giveaways!

I love lists, and it wouldn’t be SciFiMonth without two of my favorites. Expect to see my Ten Adult SciFi Books to Look for in 2020 and my Ten YA SciFi Books to Look for in 2020. I’ve already started compiling these lists, and next year is going to be fantastic!

My weekly Future Fiction posts will be dedicated to SF books this month, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to come up with three new titles each week, so my format may change slightly.

The Friday Face-Off over at Lynn’s Books is also geared toward celebrating SF this month. You can check out the themes that Lynn has chosen, and do join in if you want to!

Finally, I always end the month with a giveaway. Traditionally, I let the winner pick any SF book I’ve discussed during the month, and it’s always international. Check back later to enter!

Are you ready for SciFiMonth? Let me know if you’re joining in the fun:-D

  1. SF was my first and only love for a long time, before I discovered (or rather, re-discovered fantasy) and we all know about first loves and the way they leave their imprint on us… So it’s great to be celebrating our enjoyment of SF for a WHOLE month . 🙂
And I more than look forward to revisiting the Amazing Murderbot through your reviews!!!!!

    Engage, indeed 🙂

I can’t wait to read everyone’s posts this month, the combined love of SF is one reason this month is so special!

  2. I don’t know why I’m so super excited about this month, but I am! ENJOY MURDERBOT!! Those books are all great on their own, and it’s also a fabulous character arc across all four installments. I completely forgot about Polaris Rising, but that may have to go on my list!

I’m super excited too. I think part of it is the energy we all create with our combined excitement, lol.

  3. Can’t wait to hear what you think of The Murderbot Diaries. That’s a series I’d very much like to read. I’ll start off the month reading Sisters of the Vast Black thanks to your great review a few days back.

  4. Though I don’t read much sci-fi but I can’t wait to see what you think of these books. I always like to see if you can convince me to try more sci-fi…lol. 😉 🙂

  5. MUUURRRRDEERRRRBOOOOTTTTT! ❤️

I like how many things I don’t recognise on your possible TBR – I think you’re going to do my TBR a lot of damage this month (just for a change) 😉

  6. Sarah

Did I just miss all of your posts last week or what? Sorry! I am actually working on a couple of these myself. Struggling with Dead Astronauts right now (it is bizarre, even by VanderMeer’s standards) and hoping to get to Gamechanger very soon! Looking forward to your Future Fictions and Top 10 lists!

  7. Murderbot is THE BEST. I’m dying with anticipation for the full length novel coming out sometime, eeek! <3

Rory Thorne looks interesting, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on that one!

And Dead Astronauts sounds like a mushroom trip, lol, I didn't think he could get weirder than Annihilation, but look at Jeff go!

  8. Yay! I can’t wait to see all your sci fi posts!! I am going to participate, but I probably won’t have a ton of posts because I tend to read more fantasy than sci fi

  9. I just finished a murderbot novella yesterday – Artificial Condition. You should totally start with those novellas. I wasn’t a fan of the second one but first one was amazing.

  10. Hallo, Hallo Tammy,

I finally have my signal flares inthe sky this month myself – I am hoping others participate in the spine poetry prompt as this was the first year I felt cosy comfortable about how I approached mine which uses my TBR audiobooks for #SciFiMonth as the source inspirations! 🙂 Also – I spied a few interesting titles in your TBR – Sea of Rust and I still haven’t borrowed Aurora Rising to know if I’ll be a fan of the series or not, so far, its the cover art which implores me as I haven’t had the chance to hear the actual story so my imagination wonders about how they developed the cover art to link into the plot.

I called it the 7th Year of Sci Fi November on my blog – mostly as despite the fact the event started in [2013] the same year as my blog, they always increased the years by ‘one’ which I never understood. Wouldn’t it be ironic if now this is the first year its known as the same years of existence as my blog? lol

I can’t wait to start to settle into the books themselves and start to pull together my reviews, posts and even a new idea I have for a discussion about the kinds of Science Fiction stories I am most in search of and find hardest to source!

Wicked thrilled your joining the event again and looking forward to your showcases!
