Future Fiction #44: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I feel like I hit the jackpot today…three new YA books written by female authors, and I want to read all of them!

Seventeen-year-old Tempe was born into a world of water. When the Great Waves destroyed her planet, its people had to learn to survive living on the water, but the ruins of the cities below still called. Tempe dives daily, scavenging the ruins of a bygone era, searching for anything of value to trade for Notes. It isn’t food or clothing that she wants to buy, but her dead sister’s life. For a price, the research facility on the island of Palindromena will revive the dearly departed for twenty-four hours before returning them to death. It isn’t a heartfelt reunion that Tempe is after; she wants answers. Elysea died keeping a terrible secret, one that has ignited an unquenchable fury in Tempe: Her beloved sister was responsible for the death of their parents. Tempe wants to know why.

But once revived, Elysea has other plans. She doesn’t want to spend her last day in a cold room accounting for a crime she insists she didn’t commit. Elysea wants her freedom and one final glimpse at the life that was stolen from her. She persuades Tempe to break her out of the facility, and they embark on a dangerous journey to discover the truth about their parents’ death and mend their broken bond. But they’re pursued every step of the way by two Palindromena employees desperate to find them before Elysea’s time is up–and before the secret behind the revival process and the true cost of restored life is revealed.

The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte. Releases in March 2020 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers. This story sounds right up my alley! I love the idea of bringing the dead back to life for a short period of time (Torchwood anyone??), and I love stories that span a 24-hour period. This sounds so good!

A diverse fantasy reimagining of Les Misérables and The Jungle Book.

In the dark days following a failed French Revolution, in the violent jungle of an alternate 1828 Paris, young cat-burglar Eponine (Nina) Thenardier goes head to head with merciless royalty, and the lords of the city’s criminal underworld to save the life of her adopted sister Cosette (Ettie).

Her vow will take her from the city’s dark underbelly, through a dawning revolution, to the very heart of the glittering court of Louis XVII, where she must make an impossible choice between guild, blood, betrayal and war.

For fans of the gritty criminal underworlds of Six Of Crows, The Lies Of Locke Lamora, fierce alternate histories like The Gilded Wolves, And I Darken …and anyone who knows that Eponine deserved so much more.

A Court of Miracles by Kester Grant. Releases in June 2020 from Knopf Children’s Books. I’ll admit I’m a little leery about the “Les Misérables meets The Jungle Book” blurb, but I can’t get over this gorgeous cover and I NEED this.

The teenage daughter of an executioner and the traitorous prince she can’t kill must reluctantly join forces to dethrone a paranoid queen after discovering they are trapped in a video game in Sheena Boekweg’s fast-paced YA debut, Glitch Kingdom

Ryo was the golden boy, the prankster prince, but with one stroke of a pen he has lost everything. Dagney and Grigfen were happy as minor members of the court, but when their father, the king’s executioner, is branded a traitor, they each must deal in death in order to survive.. McKenna, queen of the enemy realm, has inherited a mission of conquest by assassination, but worries she’s not up to the role.

But behind the crowns and masks hides a secret… All of these teens are actually players in the newest, shiniest, most immersive virtual reality video game, competing against each other for a highly coveted internship with a prestigious game developer.

But now this life-changing opportunity has suddenly become a deadly trap. A glitch in the software has locked the players inside the game, and they’ll need to escape before the fantasy world corrupts around them. The only way out is to win.

Glitch Kingdom by Sheena Boekweg. Releases in February 2020 from Feiwel & Friends. OK, this sounds like a bunch of fun! Also, I believe there is disability rep in this story, at least judging by the girl in the wheelchair on the cover.  I’m not sure how I found this book but I’m glad I did!

Wow. Just Wow with Court of Miracles. Name dropping Les Miserables, The Jungle Book, Six of Crows and Lies of Locke Lamora?! I’m also a little confused about “jungles of an alternate Paris”…. lol. I mean fingers crossed it’s as fun as it sounds but like you, I am a little bit skeptical.

The Vanishing Deep does sound like lots of fun though! I don’t think I’ve read Scholte before.

I think this is Scholte’s second book. She wrote one called Four Dead Queens that got pretty good reviews.

I’m a dummy- I own that one and sort of previewed the first chapter and liked it very much. I’ll have to finish that one and hopefully jump on this.

  2. I shouldn’t have even looked. Like my wishlist needed 3 more books! These do sound great, especially The Vanishing Deep. And come on, Les Mis and The Jungle Book. Who sits around and comes up with these combinations? I’d read it just for curiosities sake!

    • Tammy

Ha ha, there must be marketing people at publishing houses whose job is think of comparison taglines!

  3. Okay, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find covers with people on the cover looking directly at you really creepy me out. xD The Vanishing Deep sounds really interesting, but I’d need to read it on Kindle because that cover. Phew. Nope.

“Les Misérables meets The Jungle Book” is a really interesting comp, and I’m not sure about it, either. But the “for fans of” section lists a lot of really good books, and that makes me excited. I’ll have to watch for that one!

  4. They all look good, Tammy – Glitch Kingdom sounds a little like Tad Williams’ Otherland series where folks got trapped in a virtual universe. But The Vanishing Deep is the book that I would LOVE to read:))

I’m super excited for The Vanishing Deep! The cover is a bit disturbing but I’m also drawn to it:-)

  5. These are all new to me! Though the name Astrid Scholte sounded so familiar to me, so I had to look it out and turns out she’s the author of Four Dead Queens which I really enjoyed, so The Vanishing Deep is definitely going on the TBR. The third one sounds interesting too, but I can’t get over that bizarre cover, lol.

Ha ha, yes that cover is a little strange! But for some reason I feel like it might work with the story.
