Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
Wow, I think it’s been a month since my last book haul post! I’ve got some exciting new books, and I’m grateful to all the publishers who sent these my way:
Physical books for review:
I can’t remember ever getting an ARC from 47North, or maybe it’s been a long time, but I’m very happy to have received The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith. I just featured this in my last Future Fiction, and now you can see how pretty the physical book is. This is an October release, so it seems like it will be perfect for the Halloween season:-)
I also received a surprise copy of Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi, a Tor.com novella. This is actually a duplicate copy since I got one at Comic Con, so maybe I should do a “doubles” giveaway one of these days!
And surprisingly, I won a Goodreads giveaway! The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman is high on my most anticipated books of 2019 so I’m thrilled to have a copy, although. Again, I got a signed copy at Comic Con so this is another double. Giveaway??
I’m thrilled to have a copy of Jade War by Fonda Lee, the second book in her Green Bone Saga series. But Tammy, you haven’t read Jade City yet! Why yes, I am aware. Looks like I’m going to be binge reading both books soon:-)
I’m also thrilled to finally have a copy of Our War by Craig DiLouie. I requested it months ago, and I had almost given up on it. But Orbit came through, and I will be reading this very soon. I’ve already seen rave reviews from some bloggers I trust, so I can’t wait!
And yet another highly anticipated Orbit title, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow. Orbit is killing it these days with their releases, and this is another book that everyone is loving.
From the Ace/Berkley team, I was super excited to get these beautiful finished copies: The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier will be—drumroll—my first Marillier book! Yes it’s true!
And I’ve heard lots of buzz for A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker. It’s a science fiction story that revolves around music, and I can’t wait to read it.
I was approached by a publicist at Mason Jar Press and offered a copy of …And Other Disasters by Malka Older. As soon as I realized it was a collection of stories by Older, I immediately agree to read it. This is a November release, so you’ll probably see a review up in a couple of months.
Tor Books has been exceedingly generous lately! I received a bunch of surprise book mail from them over the past few weeks. First, a finished copy of Heartwood Box by Ann Aguirre. I also have an ARC which I haven’t read yet, but this motivates me to give it a try.
I was completely surprised by Turning Darkness Into Light by Marie Brennan. I am probably the only person I know who hasn’t read her Lady Trent series, so I’m not sure if I should dive into this first or not.
Inch by Inch by Morgan Llywelyn is the sequel to last year’s Drop by Drop. I still need to catch up with that book, and I didn’t even know this sequel was on the horizon!
Iron Gods by Andrew Bannister is a sequel to Creation Machine, another “first book” I haven’t read. It sounds pretty interesting, but this is probably going on the “maybe” pile.
And finally from Tor, a book I was thrilled to receive, Blood of an Exile by Brian Naslund. I’ve been seeing some very good reviews around, and time permitting, I will try to give this a shot.
Last but not least, I received a Kickstarter reward for Silvia Moreno-Garcia‘s latest publishing venture (did you guys know she has her own publishing company called Innsmouth Free Press, as well as being a well-known author?) Monsters from the Vault and Revenge of Monsters from the Vault by Orrin Grey are collections of mini reviews of classic horror films, and they look like so much fun! They also threw in a cool pin:-)
And since we’re on the subject of Silvia Moreno-Garcia, she’s currently running an Indiegogo campaign that isn’t quite funded yet. Check it out here, it’s the first English translation of The Road of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate, a Mexican cult vampire novel! There’s only about a week left and I REALLY want this book, so help a girl out and take a look!
Digital review books:
I’ve been pretty good about requesting books from NetGalley, and I just have a handful of new titles this week. First up, The Unsuitable by Molly Pohlig, a book I featured recently on Future Fiction. It just sounds so weird and good, I have to give it a try:-)
Fireborne by Rosaria Munda was free to download on NetGalley a few days ago, and I was lucky enough to see the email soon enough to get a copy. I’ve been hearing really good things about this YA fantasy, and I’m curious to see if it lives up to the hype.
I loved Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ first book in this series, Little White Lies, and I’m happy I was approved for the sequel, Deadly Little Scandals. Not my go-to genre, but tons of fun! Weird cover change, though. Not sure if this is the final cover or not…
Finally, I grabbed Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather from NetGalley, because I’m anxious to read a SF story about “nuns in space”!
Huge thanks to 47North, Tor.com, Tor Books, Quirk Books, Orbit, Ace, Berkley, Mason Jar Press, Henry Holt & Co., G.P Putnam’s Sons for Young Readers, and Freeform:-D
I’ll be reading The Ten Thousand Doors of January soon too. Jade City is brilliant. I can’t wait to see what you b think of them!
Ooooh, I’m so excited to read Jade City! Looking at my review calendar, I may have to wait a few months…
I read an ARC of The Harp of Kings and should have a review up this coming week. It is excellent.

Good to know, looking forward to your review:-)
Wow! That’s a fantastic haul. I hope you’ll enjoy all of them. ♥

Thanks Stephanie!
The Vine With is on my radar. I have not read the Lady Trent series either, but always wanted to. Maybe the new book will get me started on Brennan’s books.
Riley A Moreland recently posted…The Harp of Kings (Warrior Bards, #1) by Juliet Marillier
I’ve heard wonderful things about the Lady Trent books, I just need more hours in the day:-)
I’m reading The Harp of Kings now, and it’s my first Marillier book too.
I read Turning Darkness Into Light, not having read the Lady Trent books, and thought it was ok – not spectacular, but strong enough that I want to go back and give Lady Trent a read.
Because I have so many books to read, I’ll probably put Turning Darkness Into Light on the back burner for now.
I have five of them on my list, already through two!
Hey, you’re ahead of me!
When I saw your mention of “nuns in space” I went to learn more about this book and was delighted at the detail about the living ship: memories of Farscape’s Moya made me very interested in this story for this very reason… 🙂

Sisters of the Vast Black sounds really cool:-)
I am curious about a few of these and hope you enjoy them all!
Thanks Stormi!
Always such great lists of new books! I immediately added Sisters of the Vast Black to my TBR, love the sound of it, love the cover, and love the title. I’m also very curious about The Ten Thousand Doors of January and The Harp of Kings.
I think Sisters of the Vast Black is going to be super original!
I got a lot of the same books in the mail this week, and also requested and was approved for Deadly Little Scandals! That is a neat cover though, I’ve never seen that one and can’t find it anywhere, must have been a very recent change!
I pull all my cover images from Edelweiss, so that’s where I found it. It looks like the paperback of the first book has the same design
I’m exhausted for you just looking at these ARCs! I don’t know how you do it. Looks like a great haul though- I’m curious about a few of these, and there’s others I haven’t even seen yet.
Ha ha, right?? This is a month worth, though. It looks worse than it is…
A great haul. I hope you get chance to pick up the Marillier.
Happy reading.
Lynn
I will, Lynn! I’ve read some great reviews of The Harp of Kings
Nice haul! Sisters of the Vast Black definitely has me curious. I snagged a copy of Fireborne too after hearing good things about it.
Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra recently posted…Review: WELL MET by Jen DeLuca
I hope we both love Fireborne:-)
So many good looking books! Just wanted to let you know that I also haven’t read the Lady Trent series yet >_< But I own them, and hope to read them after I get caught up on some review books!
You’re ahead of me, I don’t even own the Lady Trent books! Ha ha, one of these days…
I wouldn’t know where to start. They did a major cover switch on the Barnes series didn’t they? Although I think I like this one better. And nuns in space? That sounds really cool.
The cover is completely different for the Barnes book! Not sure I like it better, but I don’t care too much as long as the story is good.
Jeez, you sure do get your hands on a lot of fantastic books, Tammy! Hope you get around to reading Fonda Lee’s books soon. I’ll be curious to see what you’ll think of them! 😀 Happy reading!

I definitely will, Lashaan. Hopefully I’ll be able to do a binge read of the two Fonda Lee books. Maybe not this month, but by the end of the year for sure:-)
So many great books! I am really looking forward to Ten Thousand Doors, also that cover is gorgeous. I’m excited for you, lots of great reading ahead. I also received a surprise copy of The Vine Witch, which I hadn’t heard of until then, so I’m intrigued.
What a robust haul! The only ones we have in common are Fireborne and The Vine Witch, but I am excited to read both of them & hear your thoughts!
