Happy New Year everyone! I can’t believe it’s 2019. That year just feels so, futuristic, lol. I hope everyone enjoys the day, and I hope you have time to read some good books:-D I love New Year’s because it’s much more relaxing than Christmas, and this year I can look forward to a short work week!
January is bringing a TON of new speculative fiction releases, and I’m hoping to read as many of these as I can. I tried to read four last month, so I could at least get a jump on my TBR pile, but even though that plan didn’t quite work out, I did manage to read two January books, one of which I already reviewed (see below). So, we’ll see how many of these I can knock off the pile:
The Wicked King by Holly Black. My review will be up on Thursday, so stay tuned! I really loved the second book in Black’s The Folk of the Air series.
The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan. Lots of early buzz for this debut! I’m very excited to get started, but I’m a little wary of all the hype. Hopefully it will live up to my expectations.
Slayer by Kiersten White. As a Buffy fan, there would be no excuse for me NOT to read this book. So of course I will! I’ve read some good reviews, and I hope I agree with them.
Lipstick Voodoo by Kristi Charish. This is the second book in Charish’s Kincaid Strange series. I was blown away by how much I loved the first book, and I should be starting this soon.
The Fall by Tracy Townsend. The Nine was one of my favorite books of 2017, and I’m so glad to finally be able to read the sequel!
The Fall of Io by Wesley Chu. Chu’s long running series is getting another book, I’m so excited! I’ve been with his Tao series from the beginning, and this is the second book in a spin-off focusing on new characters.
The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky. I’m excited to see so many glowing reviews already, and I’m eager to dive back into another book by Brodsky. This is historical fantasy and it sounds great!
Station Zero by Philip Reeve. I swear I’m going to get more people to read this underrated series if it kills me! This is the third book in Reeve’s YA Railhead series, and you will NOT regret adding this to your TBR.
The Cold is in Her Bones by Peternelle van Arsdale. Honestly, the reviews for this are all over the place, and because this came to me unsolicited, I think I’m going to wait until some fellow bloggers weigh in before I decide whether to read it or not. I love the idea of a Medusa retelling, though!
Lake Silence by Anne Bishop. I think I requested this? But I don’t have a review copy yet, however, if I did request it, I’m sure it will arrive before the end of the month. I’m hoping to read it, because I have the sequel:-P
In case you missed them, here are the books I reviewed in December:
King of the Road by R.S. Belcher
Firefly: Big Damn Hero by James Lovegrove
In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
Dragonshadow by Elle Katharine White
Fire & Heist by Sarah Beth Durst
Happy new year!
I only know the Holly Black book, but just based on the covers i’m already seeing some interesting looking stuff here 😀
Happy New Year, Norrie!
Like you I’m very intrigued by The Wolf and the Whale and will try to add it to my reading queue as soon as possible… 🙂

I’ve been hearing good things about it, I’m excited:-)
I can’t wait to check slayer out!!
Yay! I’ve seen some good reviews, so here’s hoping:-)
As a fellow Buffy fan, I hope “Slayer” is good! I’m also really interested in seeing your review of “The Fall”.
I’m already reading my most anticipated read: “Firefly: Big Damn Hero”. So far it’s been very entertaining.
Glad you like Firefly! I thought the author did a really good job getting most of the voices down, and the overall feeling of the show.
Happy New Year!
I can’t wait to see your thoughts on The Wicked King and Slayer, Tammy. I’m adding The Wolf in the Whale to my tbr.
I really enjoyed The Wicked King (I just finished it) and I hope to start Slayer soon. Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed The Wolf in the Whale, it made my list of favorites read in 2018. Combining Inuit and Norse mythology, what’s not to like? I hope you enjoy it. I’ve no clue yet what I’ll read next in January. Right now I’m taking a short break from speculative, reading the non-fiction A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, about his hike up the Appalachian Trail. Very good so far.

Glad to hear that, Todd, I enjoyed her last series so much. Oh wow, A Walk in the Woods is one of my favorites! I’m a huge Bill Bryson fan:-)
Happy new year! The hype didn’t *quite* live up to The Gutter Prayer for me, but it was still a great read! I’m beginning The Wolf in the Whale tonight!
I’m looking forward to your review of The Gutter Prayer, hype is a tricky thing:-)
Happy New Year! I hope you love your new reads for 2019!
Thanks Lisa! Happy New Year:-)
Looking forward to your review of The Gutter Prayer. SO much hype around it.
I know! Hype worries me sometimes, but I’m going to be optimistic:-)
Some great books here. I’ve not seen The Wolf and the Whale so I’m going to have to look into that one. January will be a mix of old and new for me as there are a few older ones I want to get out of the way. I just started The Passage and am enjoying it. Can’t wait to see some reviews on this one, I wasn’t a huge fan of The Cruel Prince but it did pull up at the end and I will be reading the next one. I hope I like it better. Wonder what will be my “Didn’t like it go-to book” for 2019? You know I’m bound to have one.

Oh a great list. SLAYER is one am really looking forward to
I hope to start Slayer soon, and I hope we both love it:-)
So many good ones up ahead, Tammy! I love their covers! I think I’m most excited The Lost Girls of Paris this month. Happy New Year and happy reading!
Happy New Year, Jennifer! I think 2019 will be the best:-)
Happy New Year, Tammy! I’m really looking forward to reading your review for The Wicked King since that is one of my most anticipated January releases. I hope all of your upcoming reads are great ones for you.

Thanks Suzanne, I feel good about most of my January books. I do love starting the year on a high note:-)
A very Happy New Year, Tammy:)). What a great list! It’s sent me scampering across to Netgalley… fingers crossed I’ll get the books I really want! I look forward to hearing what you think of your January reads, but I think one thing is sure – the awesome reading we enjoyed in 2018 is still going strong.
I hope you get the books you requested! Happy New Year!
I can think of three January releases I’m excited to read. The only thing is, I’ve had to rethink my budget for 2019, and I need to be more careful about my book-buying habits this year. :/ So I think I’ll buy one once it’s out (Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden), wait until February to buy one of the others (King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo), and borrow the last one from the library (Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky). And then if I enjoy the last one enough to get my own copy, I’ll get it at a later date.

I’m definitely curbing my book spending this year too. After I spend a couple of Amazon gift cards, that is:-)
For the first time in years we stayed home for the holidays so I really pushed myself to do as much reading as I could during our staycation, so I actually managed to finish 3 of these (The Gutter Prayer, The Cold is in Her Bones, The Wicked King). Of course, now I have a ton of reviews to write/catch up with lol.
Very cool, I tried to get ahead too, as we were here the whole vacation, but so many family obligations cut into my reading time. But still, I have managed two January books:-)
What a fabulous bunch of books. Amazon will be happy to see me now! LOL This was the year for books and I’m excited about 2019 too. Happy New Year, Tammy!

Some great books on here. I have a few of these waiting to be read although i didn’t make much progress over Christmas, just too much going on family wise.
Lynn 😀
Hey, December is tough for me too, I didn’t get much reading done, and then when I did start to read, my brain was too distracted to have any fun with it:-)
OMG I wish I could eat your TBR. Looks SO GOOD!. I’m especially excited to hear how you like Lipstick Voodoo! I’m obsessed with everything Voodoo right now :

I’ve heard a lot of great things too, about The Gutter Prayer. I’m hoping it’s not all hype:-)
I’m interested in the Buffy book too but I’ll wait to see what you think because I have too much on my plate atm.
I know what you mean. I have way too much on my plate, but I’m going to try to read them all anyway, lol.
Buffy book! Man, I’ll be looking out for your review on that one. 😀
