Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!
I had fun with Waiting on Wednesday last month, posting only science fiction picks, but I have to admit I’m happy to be back to being able to select any genre I want. This cover just popped up and it’s BEAUTIFUL. Plus I can’t wait to read Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s next book:
The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore, for readers of The Song of Achilles and Uprooted.
Here we shall begin to tell a story: a tale of a throne lost, of monsters and magic. A tale of gods and of the shadow realm. But this, our story, it begins in our world, in the land of mortals.
It begins with a woman. For this story, it is her story. It begins with her.
The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty, small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it–and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan God of Death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City–and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.
Mixing the excitement of the Roaring Twenties with Prehispanic mythology, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a vivid, wildly imaginative historical fantasy.
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in August 2019 from Del Rey Books. This sounds AMAZING. I can hardly believe we have to wait EIGHT months to read it. I mean, come on, Mayan gods, Roaring Twenties, mythology, my head is spinning just thinking about it! Plus THAT COVER.
Hmm, less interested in the Jazz age than the Mayan mythology, but I’ll see what the early reviews have to say. Nice pick.
I’m a little hesitant about the Jazz age too, but I love this author so I’m trusting her.
I love this author (or at least Certain Dark Things) and am anxious to find another book by her to fall in love with. This sounds like quite a mix up of things but yes, I’m curious. Such a long wait though!
It sounds so different from Certain Dark Things, but I have faith that she can pull it off:-)
I hadn’t heard of this one til this morning, looks amazing!
It does look amazing, right? I think the cover was just revealed.
Well, that certainly sound like a weirdly compelling read. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
Ha ha, you’re right, on the surface it doesn’t seem like it would work. Here’s hoping!
This is new to me. Great cover art and the synopsis sure is promising.

The cover is one of my favorites:-)
What a cover , and the Twenties setting appeals to me too. Definitely going to look out for this one!
It’s an unusual mix but I think she can pull it off!
Gorgeous cover! The mix of Mayan mythology and the Jazz Age sounds unusual, but potential really great!
It is an interesting mix of elements!
After Certain Dark Things, The Beautiful Ones and Prime Meridian, Silvia Moreno-Garcia has become one of my “must read” authors, and this new one sounds beyond intriguing… 🙂

Agreed, she is a “must read” for me as well, although I still need to catch up with The Beautiful Ones:-)
She is an amazing author – and as ever with your selections, Tammy, I’m looking at this one with hunger…
I can’t wait, it’s been far too long since the last book of hers I read:-)
OMG! That cover is INSANELY BEAUTIFUL! And a dark fantasy set in 1920s Mexico inspired by Mayan mythology” I think I’m crying! This book sounds so freaking awesome, I didn’t even know it existed! Thank you so much for showcasing it.
I hope you have a wonderful week ahead and Happy Holiday Season.
Always, Helena
Thank you Helena! I hope we both get to read it, and the inside lives up to the lovely cover:-)
Jazz age plus Mayan mythology definitely has me curious… plus of course I haven’t read Moreno- Garcia yet but have heard stellar things.
She’s really good, and all her books are very different from one another.
Ooh, I think I need this. Jazz Age, Mayan mythology, and that cover! I literally said ‘wow’ out loud when I saw it, haha, it seriously is beautiful. Definitely adding this to my TBR, even though it’s going to be a long wait. Thanks for sharing this one!
Yeah, the wait seems pretty long, but hopefully there’s plenty to read between now and then:-)
I’m pretty sure I’ve never read anything inspired by Mexican folklore so this story really appeals to me. And yes, that cover is beautiful!
