Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!
This cover popped up on Goodreads last week and not only do I love it, but this story sounds CRAZY.
A thrilling, atmospheric debut with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival.
When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.
Instead, she got Em.
Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .
As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, her control giving way to paranoia and anger, Gyre severs her connection with Em and the outside world. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head.
But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. Releases in April 2019 from Harper Voyager. I love the idea of the odd relationship between Gyre and Em, and the comparisons of The Martian and Annihilation pretty much sealed the deal for me:-) Can’t wait!
This does sound like it has great potential, a blend of sci-fi and horror! 🙂 (or at least it sounds that way)
I think it sounds like it has a lot of horror elements too. We’ll see!

Unfortunately I DNF Annihilation BUT I do think it is a pretty cool concept so “the Martian and Annihilation” would do it for me too! Hope it’s as good as it sounds!
Me too, blurbs can be deceiving but I hope this one works out:-)
Wow – the write up for this is brilliant. Colour me intrigued.

Yes, it really grabbed me. I’m hoping for great things:-)
The story really does sound crazy. The blurb starts somewhere and then ends up somewhere completely unexpected but I need it. lol

Yeah, the blurb is a little strange, but hopefully it will all make sense–or not!
Damn, that sounds pretty cool . . . I’m curious as to who (or maybe what) Em really is.
That’s what I was wondering too, a cool mystery hopefully!
That’s one of the best covers I’ve seen so far, I think!
It is a good cover, isn’t it?
Love the cover for this one. Like the concept as well–seems intriguing.
The idea sounds very unique, which is one reason I want to read it, hopefully it will deliver!
Oooo, now that looks tempting!
It does look tempting, I wish it were coming out a little sooner!
This does sound pretty crazy–I’m in! I’m such a sucker for books with some sort of ‘expedition’ plot in them. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
I hope we both love it:-)
This one already caught my attention, but now I can’t keep it out of my mind thanks to that wonderfully terrifying cover!
That desperately gripping gauntlet is nothing short of riveting… 🙂

The cover is cool, and it seems like it sets the stage for what will be a tension-filled story:-)
Not my type of book but it sounds pretty cool. I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for visiting, Nicci:-)
A mix of the Martian and Gravity and Annihilation does indeed sound like a good mashup! Hopefully it’s more survival and less of the weird, because I have high hopes for this one!
For your sake I hope you’re right:-)
You had me at “The Martian”. This sounds fantastic!
I love that comparison too, I hope it lives up to it:-)
This sounds so messed up in all the best ways! Thanks for sharing 😀
Ha ha, that’s what I was thinking too!
Sounds awesome! Haven’t seen it around before, thanks for sharing, Tammy! 😀
