Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
I am declaring a BAN on NetGalley for the rest of the month, and possibly even March! Let’s see how well I can stick to that. I tend to log into NetGalley when I’m bored, and let me tell you, being bored is NEVER a good thing, lol. I have way too many new titles, and even though I’m very careful and I only request books I’m already interested in, there seem to be so many new titles coming out in the next several months. Anyway, here are my latest and greatest:
Physical Review Books:
Echoes of Understorey by Thoraiya Dyer was a surprise arrival from Tor. I haven’t read the first book in the series, so I’m not sure when I’ll get to this, but I’m interested, so we’ll see! Thank you Tor:-)
Even though I’m horribly behind and I still need to read Royal Bastards, I immediately said “Yes” to the kind publicist who offered me a review copy of the sequel, City of Bastards by Andrew Shvarts. I’ve heard nothing but great things about both books, so I’m eager to do a binge read before City of Bastards releases in June! Huge thanks to Disney-Hyperion:-)
Torn by Rowenna Miller was a welcome arrival from Orbit! I’m thrilled to have a copy, which I’ll be reading next month. This story features a magical seamstress! Thank you Orbit:-)
Finally, I received a surprise copy of Blade and Bone by Jon Sprunk, courtesy of Pyr Books. I have not read the other books in this series, but I may have them in a pile somewhere.
Digital Review Books:
These two HIGHLY anticipated Saga Press titles just popped up on NetGalley, and really, I had no choice but to download them:
Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente. The story sounds crazy, but I love everything Valente writes, I can’t wait!
Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse. I’m super excited for this debut, and if the cover is any indication, this book is going to rock!
Thank you Saga!
The Night Dahlia by R.S. Belcher. This is one of my most anticipated books of 2018, and I’m so happy to have this in my hands! It’s the sequel to Belcher’s Nightwise which I adored a few years back. Tor asked me to be on the blog tour in March, and I’ll be hosting a giveaway of the book as well, so keep your eyes peeled for that! So many huge thanks to Tor!
Before Mars by Emma Newman. Super excited to be approved for this as well! Newman has quickly become one of my “go to” writers and I have no doubt this book will be another great example of her writing prowess. Thank you Ace Books!
Only Human by Sylvain Neuvel. The conclusion to Neuvel’s awesome Themis Files, I’m very excited to have a copy! Big thanks to Del Rey:-)
Continuing with the “beyond excited to read” list is Looking Glass by Andrew Mayne. I absolutely loved the first book in the series, The Naturalist, and I’m curious to see what he has in store for Theo Cray in this next book. Big thanks to Thomas & Mercer:-)
Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire is a reissue of her 2014 book, which is now going to be getting a sequel. Hence the reissue and new cover design. I never had a chance to read this when it first came out, so I’m thrilled to be able to start this urban fantasy series. Thank you DAW!
Finally, this last book is already out in the UK (under a slightly different title) and I’ve been hearing great things about it. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is part murder mystery, part Groundhog Day, and I’m so curious to see what everyone is talking about. Thank you Sourcebooks Landmark!
Purchased:
I was actually very excited to find out this month’s PageHabit Science Fiction box featured Gnomon by Nick Harkaway. I’ve read some gushing reviews of this book, and although it’s a little intimidating, I hope to get to it an some point.
I also received a Kickstarter reward from The Book Smugglers, a copy of Hurricane Heels by Isabel Yap. I adore The Book Smugglers publishing arm, and their books are little jewels that I love having in my library.
Great list, Tammy. I’d like to get around to The Night Dahlia and Before Mars. Ones I hadn’t heard of but interest me are Trail of Lightning (like you said, cool cover) and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (love the title). It’s hard to say no to more books, eh? 🙂
It’s so hard to say no, right? I wish publishers would slow down a little, it’s overwhelming when you want to read so many new releases:-)
I’ve got ARCs of City of Bastards and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, too and I can’t wait to get to them. I hope you love Shvarts when you get to him!

Ooh me too! I’ve heard wonderful things about Royal Bastards:-)
I’m interested to hear what you think of Trail of Lightning.
I am trying very, very hard to limit my ARCs to no more than one per month.
One per month sounds like a luxury! Good luck with that. Personally, I’d like to have only four review books per month, which is more than comfortable, and then I can fit in my “own” books as well.
I keep telling myself I am going to stay off NG and I fail every time so I hope you can keep to it. I even tell myself I am going only get sequels to series I have already started but that doesn’t work when I see a new cozy series…lol.
I know what you mean! It really takes will power. But my NetGalley stats are way down as far as books I’ve reviewed, so I need to try to catch up and get my percentage back up!
Wait! Are those pencil shaped matches in the corner?
Can’t wait to start seeing some reviews for Trail of Lightning 🙂
They are actually little pencils! Cool, right? You pull them out and you can supposedly sharpen them on the “lighting” strip.
Aw, man. I’m considering becoming a “no review copy” blog, and then I see something like Trail of Lightning. Haha. Netgalley is a tough, tough place to resist. 🙂
How does one do that, become a “no review copy” blog? What a great idea! I don’t think I’d have the willpower to say no, though:-)
The Evelyn Hardcastle book has been getting some excellent reviews so hope you enjoy that.
And, I’m so excited to read the Mayne book.
Lynn 😀
I requested Evelyn Hardcastle because of some blogger reviews I’ve read – I guess it’s already out in the UK? So hopefully it lives up to the hype!
Great haul! I’m really looking forward to reading Torn as well!

I was so happy to get a copy:-)
Wow, you really did get a lot of books! I don’t think Torn is quite my kind of book, but I love the premise and the cover. And I do want to read that Blade and Bone series!

The cover of Torn is actually making me nervous, seeing needles on the cover makes me squirm a little, lol!
No wonder you are swearing off Netgalley for a month – that haul is awesome:). I’m GREEN with envy – go you for getting hold of Before Mars, Space Opera and Torn, books that I would probably commit violence to get hold of if I could get away with it! I’m delighted you have acquired Gnomon – I’d love to get your take on it… Happy reading, Tammy:)
I hope I can squeeze in Gnomon at some point, I’m so curious about it:-)
Before Mars is one I’m definitely looking forward to. Space Opera is another one that looks promising, as do Royal Bastards/ City of Bastards. Awesome haul!

Thanks Greg, at least I’m requesting books I REALLY want to read on NetGalley. I’ve learned my lesson, I used to request whatever caught my eye:-)
I was good at keeping my review books to 4 or 5 a month. Then I joined some challenges and tours and that number has gone way up! LOL You have some amazing reads ahead of you.

Oh blog tours always kill me! I think I’m doing good and then I realize I have more to squeeze in. Luckily, I don’t do them very often.
I am so excited for City of Bastards, I got a copy from the kind publicist as well and can’t wait to dive in. I highly recommend the series for when you’re in the mood for something easy and lots of fun 😀 I also couldn’t resist grabbing Trail of Lightning and saying yes to the Night Dahlia tour because I really enjoyed the first book!

I will definitely remember to read the Shvarts books when I need a break from the “heavy” stuff, thanks for the tip:-)
For us compulsive readers, NetGalley is like a candy shop for a child! (and let’s not go into the “I want that one too!” syndrome we fall prey to when reading fellow bloggers’ reviews of a new book…) 😀
Exercising restraint is becoming more difficult with every passing day!

If NetGalley were more like Edelweiss, I probably wouldn’t visit as often. But it’s so PRETTY and COLORFUL I just can’t resist;-)
I also log onto Netgalley whenever I’m bored. It’s not a good habit for keeping my TBR pile manageable…
Ha ha, glad I’m not the only one!
You always have the best books. The good thing is the ones I’m interested in are already on my wishlist. I can’t wait to read Space Opera and wait to you see my Can’t Wait Wednesday choice this week! I also just finished Cruel Prince. Thought I was going to DNF it but after the first 100 pages, I was hooked.
Oh now I’m curious about your WoW this week! I’m looking forward to your review of The Cruel Prince. I loved the whole thing so I’d love to know your thoughts on the first part.
Hey you got Trail of Lightning! That was your WoW feature a few weeks ago, right? Or maybe I’m thinking of someone else? In any case, I hope you enjoy it, and all of your new books!
Have a wonderful weekend, Tammy. =)

Yep, it was a WOW a few weeks ago, I love when I get review copies of my WoW picks! Thanks for visiting, Alyssa!
Only Human!! I’m so excited to read that one! The title difference between the UK and US for The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle has me intrigued. I feel like the American one is possibly a bit of a spoiler if you know the UK one 😀
I’m curious about the title difference too, I guess reading the book might solve the riddle??
