Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!
It’s Sci Fi Month, in case you haven’t heard, and this month, starting today, all my Waiting on Wednesday picks will be science fiction. This book sounds CRAZY and I know it’s super far away, but I had to share:
“When it came down to it, you couldn’t legislate against the economics of sex and gender any more than you could legislate against people being poor.”
It’s the twenty-fourth century. Humanity has spread throughout the solar system–but for most of us, life is as precarious as it was in Dickensian England. Brothers Achille, Marcantonio, and Nore have been raised rich, but after their father spends the family fortune and puts a laser to his head, they’re forced to face facts. The wealthy Luke Bailey is willing to pay top dollar for what’s left of their estate, enough to buy Achille a commission in the space Navy. But only if Marcantonio and Nore will both become female–Marcantonio to marry Luke, and Nore to be their spinster housekeeper, for as long as Luke lives.
Over the next two decades, the now-female Marcantonio and Nore struggle to make lives for themselves in the service of their wealthy keeper. Then the alien invasion arrives.
Poor Relations by Jo Walton. Releases in September 2018 from Tor Books. I have to admit I’ve never read Walton before, but this book will definitely propel me to try her out. The blurb certainly doesn’t sound like science fiction, but I’m intrigued!
Sounds interesting and I hope you love it. I just love Tor publications!

Me too, Tor has such a wide variety of SF/Fantasy!
WHAT!!! *splutter* Jo Walton has another book coming out – AND I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT IT?? She is currently my FAVOURITE author! She is AWESOME – and she’s writing science fiction – yippee! *dances happily but dangerously around the lounge* Thank you, Tammy for the heads-up! You have just made my day:))
I’m so glad to surprise you! I’ve never read Walton myself but I’ve read all the rave reviews of her books, so I’m very excited to check this one out, especially with the transgender theme!
Now that sounds interesting . . . quite a twist
Right? Definitely one of the most unique premises I’ve run across lately.
I haven’t read any Walton before either but I think I have a few that are gathering dust on my TBR. You’re right though, it doesn’t sound very sci-fi but that cover begs to differ. Hope you enjoy it if you do end up reading it!

The Walton I have is definitely fantasy so this looks like a big change for her.
So let me get this straight..Jo Walton is writing space opera?
Oh just take my money!

Ha ha, looks that way! Let’s give her all our money:-)
WOW
The premise about the brothers down on their luck having to make difficult decisions (including a sex change!) was already interesting, but your final bombshell about the alien invasion was the deal clincher, indeed 😀
And a little fun detail: I found it quite amusing that the brother chosen to become a woman was named Marcantonio, because in Italian that name is also a synonym for “big, strapping guy”. This is going to be a very, very intriguing book…

That is so funny! It sounds like the author deliberately chose the name Marcantonio, lol.
Definitely keeping an eye on this one. The cover is interesting, very old-school…I wonder if it’s indicative of the tone we’ll get!

The cover is very old school! But the story sounds pretty progressive, so it will be interesting!
Whew, twenty-fourth century. That far ahead into the future gives me chills. This book is new to me! I hope you enjoy this book when you get the chance to read it!
Have a fabulous week, Tammy. =)

Yes, this book is really far into the future! It’s hard to imagine, right?
I will definitely keep an eye out for this one – thanks for sharing. I’ve read Walton before but definitely not sci fi so keen to see how she gets along with it.
Lynn 😀
Everyone seems surprised that she’s written a science fiction story, so I’m even more curious!
The blurb doesn’t really pull me in, to be honest, but I love Jo Walton so I’m torn!
