Over-Booked is my every-other-week or so post to share the books I’ve been getting for review, purchased or won. I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
I’ve been pretty successful at backing off on the book requests, especially on NetGalley and Edelweiss, so I only have a few new titles this week to share (which is a good thing!). But I did get some very cool things:
Physical books:
The Empty Ones by Robert Brockway. Thanks to Tor for this beautiful finished copy! I’m very excited to dive into book two of Brockway’s punk rock horror novel. I’ll be hosting Robert here on the blog next month, and I’ll have a giveaway of the book as well, so check back!
Gods of Nabban by K.V. Johansen. Thanks to Pyr for this lovely finished paperback. I hope to squeeze this into the schedule soon.
The Graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike. This was a very enthusiastic request, and I’m so grateful to Thomas Dunne for the review copy. I love Japanese horror and I’ve heard some good things about his one. It was originally published in the 80s and I believe this is the first English translation.
This Census-Taker by China Miéville. My latest purchase from limited edition publisher Subterranean Press, I’ve been waiting months for this to arrive. This edition is signed by the author and has some beautiful and creepy artwork scattered throughout!
Edgar Allan Poe: An Adult Coloring Book by Odessa Begay. This was a surprise from Sterling Publishing, and I just about fell over when I opened this package! Wow, what a cool coloring book, and just in time for the Halloween season:-) Thank you Sterling!
Digital review books:
Just one digital book this week, but such an awesome one! Big thanks to Matt Wallace for contacting me to see if I’d like to review his latest, Rencor: Life in Grudge City. The publisher describes this as “…like 48 Hours or Starsky and Hutch fused with El Santo and the Aztec Mummy.” Wallace is one of my favorite authors, and this sounds CRAZY. Big thanks to From Parts Unknown for the review copy!
And that’s my book haul this week! Let me know if you’re planning to read any of these:-D
OMG, I so want that Edgar Allen Poe coloring book!! 🙂
It’s pretty cool! I haven’t done a lot of “adult coloring” but this book makes me want to start:-)
The Empty Ones and The Graveyard Apartment sound great. Happy reading!
I know! Both of those are on my “highly anticipated” list, can’t wait!
Nice. I really need to catch up with Johansen.
I’ve never read Johansen, but I do know this is book three (??) in the series, but the publisher told me it can be read as a stand alone.
Gods of Nabban looks interesting. None of these books are on my radar yet, so I’ll have to keep an eye out for me.
As if I needed more books, I bought a bunch the other night at Barnes & Noble. Here’s what I got:
Steeplejack by A.J. Hartley
The Warrior Heir by Cinda Williams Chima
Court of Fives by Kate Elliott
The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Stavely (FINALLY!!)
The Copper Promise by Jen Williams
The Golden City by J. Kathleen Cheney
Clariel by Garth Nix
Also, I just noticed you’re reading The Obelisk Gate right now – and I CAN’T WAIT to know what you think of it. I finished it last night, and… just… oh my goodness. I’m both excited and scared to read the final book next year.
I’m about to finish The Obelisk Gate and I’ll have my review up Monday:-) I know, it’s something else. Now I’m afraid to get to the end!
I got a copy of that Edgar Allan Poe coloring book too! It’s officially the coolest coloring book I own now 😀

I really need “The Census Taker” and you already know how excited I am to read “The Graveyard Apartment” as well. Also, that Matt Wallace book sounds like a ton of fun. Did you see the new Sin de Jour book now has a cover? I think I will feature it on W.O.W. this week. The Edgar Allan Poe coloring book will be mine!

The Graveyard Apartment and The Empty Ones both look really awesome! I’ve only ever read one Japanese horror book, but I’m definitely interested in reading more. I’ll have to check out the graveyard apartment when it comes out.

Oh! I want that coloring book! 😀 And I was looking at The Graveyard Apartment the other day, debating on requesting (I’m trying to maintain some self restraint with request … we all know how well that works!)

Looks like the Poe coloring book could have some interesting spooky scenes. Enjoy.

I’d be lying if I said any other book beside Rencor: Life in Grudge City was what I wanted to read most 😛
I hope you get a chance to read it:-)
I love that Poe colouring book and totally want it. I have massive envy now!! 😀
