What’s On My Plate – August 2013

On My PlateHappy August, everyone! July flew by and now summer is almost over:( I can’t believe my kids start school in TWO WEEKS! Yep, we go back to school early in these here parts…August is shaping up to be a busy month, plus my book club starts up again, so I have an additional book to read on top of everything else—but it’s a good one, and I’m glad I finally have an excuse to squeeze it in! Here’s what I have on my plate this month:

For Review:

Project Cain by Geoffrey Girard. The author kindly sent me an ARC of his debut, and I’ll be reading this soon.

Dancer, Daughter, Traitor Spy by Elizabeth Kiem. I love that this takes place in Russia, and it’s about ballet!

The Weight of Souls by Bryony Pearce. Here’s another book from one of my fave publishers, Strange Chemistry!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. A debut that’s been compared to Harry Potter. We’ll see…

The Returned by Jason Mott. Here’s another book that’s getting lots of marketing push. I’m anxious to see if it lives up to the hype.

Appalachian Undead and Mountain Dead edited by Jason Sizemore & Eugene Johnson. More backwoods horror from the wonderful folks at Apex Book Company! I recently reviewed Desper Hollow and really enjoyed it. I’ll also be interviewing Jason Sizemore. I don’t have a date scheduled yet, but you’ll know when I do:)

Blog Tours:

Once again I’ve signed up for more blog tours than I should have! But I’m excited about all of them, so that’s ok! In fact, I had to beg to get on the Three tour:)

Canary by Rachel Alpine. My tour stop is August 7th, and I’ll have a review. It’s rare for me to read contemporaries, but this one caught my attention and is very thought-provoking.

Three by Jay Posey. My tour stop is August 8th. I LOVED this book, people! I should have my review up soon. Check back on the 8th when I interview Jay, who is a pretty funny guy, and interesting too. You will have the chance during the tour to win one of two signed copies of Three!

Relic by Renee Collins. My stop is August 20th, and Renee will be doing a guest post. I’m beyond excited to read this book:)

Cloaked in Fur by T. F. Walsh. This book has some really good reviews on Goodreads, and I’m anxious to read it. My stop on the tour is the 22nd.

Hold Tight by Cherie Colyer. Cherie is the most adorable and sweet author on the planet! I adored the first book in her series, Embrace, and this is the follow-up to it, so I can’t wait to read it. Check back on the 29th for my review!

Bookish Events:

Book Club:

Gone Girl

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I’m so glad I’m being forced to finally read this! I bought a copy when it came out, so I’m ready to go. My book club takes the summer off, so we’re all looking forward to seeing each other after a few months apart:)

That’s my month, at least so far! Have you read any of these books, or are you planning to?

I picked up The Bone Season and The Returned at BEA and I’m really looking forward to reading The Returned. April has it for review though so she’ll be reading it before I do…probably this month. I just finished The Weight of Souls last night. I’m curious to see how our feelings compare on the Angry Robot books versus the Strange Chemistry books. I definitely prefer the adult set of books more. I usually end up with just an “ok” on the SC ones.

By the way added you to our blog roll awhile ago! Cause you rock my bones!!! hehehe

    • I have liked AR books better, for the most part, but maybe because young adult has to really be outstanding to work for me, since I’m an adult I guess!

I keep forgetting I have a blog roll, Lol! I’ll have to add you guys too.

  2. I’m definitely excited to read The Bone Season, even if I am a little skeptical of any book that compares itself to HP. Dancer, Daughter looks interesting. I almost always pick up books that deal with dancers/ballet. I absolutely loved Gone Girl. I read it when it first came out and have spent the last year recommending it to anyone who will listen. I’m excited to hear what you think.

  3. Thanks for the kind words (blushing over here), and thanks for being a part of the tour this month. You certainly have a lot of intriguing books to read. A friend just recommended Gone Girl to me, so that is one book I’m looking forward to reading. II’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

  4. I was so very excited to read The Weight of Souls, but it was archived on Net Galley before I had the chance to read it 🙁 I look forward to reading what you think about it!
I am pretty interested in reading The Bone Season, as I like reading debuts, and it looks like the kind of story I could get into 🙂
