Over-Booked [106] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

This week I have a couple of exciting review books to share, along with a shit-ton of NetGalley/Edelweiss approvals (!!) and some surprise books that came unsolicited, and a couple of gifted books. I also had a weird experience over on Edelweiss, I’m wondering if this happened to anyone else? For about a day or two, I was auto-approved for ALL Macmillan titles, and I got really excited about it! I only downloaded two books, but I was tempted by a bunch. But then a few days later, I realized that the auto-approval had been revoked!! I’m not sure if it was a glitch in their system or what, but now I’m sort of bummed…Oh well! Here are my most recent book mail/eARC acquisitions:

Physical books:

First up in the physical pile, three surprises from Tor Books: Earth by Ben Bova, seems to be the 23rd book in Bova’s long running The Grand Tour series, hmmm. I’ll admit I’ve never read Bova before, and it’s doubtful I’ll be able to catch up! Next up: Kingmaker by Margaret Weis and Robert Krammes. This is book #3 in The Dragon Corsairs series. And finally from Tor, Death Goddess Dance by Levi Black, which is also book #3 in Black’s The Mythos War series. I’m sad to say I’m not reading any of these series, although I believe I do have books one and two of this last one, so perhaps I should do a binge read at some point? Big thanks to Tor:-D

Lies of Descent by Troy Carrol Bucher is a debut fantasy that I’ve never heard of before, but it’s actually got some good reviews up on Goodreads, so I’m tempted to check it out! Thank you DAW Books!

Huge thanks to Tor.com for this unexpected surprise, a finished copy of Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. It’s got lovely black sprayed edges, and I believe that only the first printing will have these. If you have any intentions of buying this book, I recommend a preorder so you can get this special edition! I’m excited to be doing my first ever buddy read with some other bloggers, which starts next week.

And another heartfelt thanks goes to Orbit Books for a surprise ARC of Ghoster by Jason Arnopp! I’ve been itching to get my hands on this and I guess the book gods heard me:-)

Oh, and one more Tor Books arrival, also a surprise, but one I’m definitely going to read: Fate of the Fallen by Kel Kade. I got an ARC at Comic Con and I wasn’t expecting to get another one in the mail. Luckily I’ve already found a home for my extra copy (it’s part of my Comic Con prize pack, won by Laura!) I’ve been hearing lots of buzz for this book, and I’m excited to read it! Thanks to Tor:-D

Finally, I completely forgot I requested Worldshaper by Edward Willett from DAW Books. This is the paperback reprint, and I requested it because I missed it when it came out last year. Not sure I can get to it this month, but I’ll definitely try. Thank you DAW!

Huge thanks to Gallery Books for a surprise box containing The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware, along with a really nice tote bag! I’ve been seeing some good reviews for this book, and I’m hoping to read it at some point.

My good blogger matey the Captain was kind enough to send a couple of books my way, and I couldn’t be happier! Seven Seasons of Buffy looks like a collection of essays about the beloved show by lots of well-known science fiction and fantasy writers. I’m eager to dive in! And as a bonus, I received a copy of Finding Serenity edited by Jane Espenson, who wrote for many of Joss Whedon’s shows over the years. I’m not certain but I believe these are also essays and theories about show elements that were never explained, because the show was cancelled so quickly. I’m intrigued, and extremely grateful to the Captain for such a lovely package!

I also received a cool snake keychain, a promotional item for Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House! (It says “Ninth House” on the back.) I remember signing up for a newsletter or something, but I didn’t know I was going to win this. Very cool:-D

Digital ARCs:

The Deep by Alma Katsu. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know I’m a big fan of Alma’s, and when I saw her upcoming book pop up on NetGalley, I couldn’t hit the “request” button fast enough. Thank goodness I was approved!

Similarly, a few days after I featured Dead Astronauts on Future Fiction, I saw it on NetGalley (hidden under “General Fiction”โ€”what’s up with that??). I’m thrilled to have a review copy, although it doesn’t come out until December.

Ah, next we come to the two Macmillan titles I downloaded when suddenly everything in their catalog was “download.” Was it a special “freebie day”? Not sure, but I’m happy to have these two books: Stormrise by Jillian Boehme and Sabbath by Nick Mamatas.

I just featured The Boatman’s Daughter by Andy Davidson on Future Fiction, and then it popped up on NetGalley. I guess it was meant to be!

And after seeing Violet by Scott Thomas on a bunch of other blogs, I knew I needed to read another book by the author who wrote Kill Creek.

And let’s all celebrate because Andrew Mayne’s next book, Dark Pattern, finally became available on NetGalley! I always have fun with this series, and I’m ready to jump in:-D

Finally, I was approved for Full Throttle by Joe Hill, after my request languished for several weeks. I was actually surprised when I was I was approved. I didn’t have the best luck with the last Joe Hill I tried to read and DNF’d (The Fireman) so we’ll see…

And that’s my latest haul! Which of these books are you excited for?

  1. I own Serenity Found, which I believe is the companion book to your Finding Serenity and I remember there were many interesting angles about the series and characters, although details are a little fuzzy since I bought it several years ago: I look forward to your take on this one!
And I keep seeing Ghoster mentioned around the blogosphere, so that might very well be my next pick from the list in the Orbit newsletter… ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Nice collection. I enjoyed Lies of Descent, so I’m curious to hear what you think if you read it. I’ve read something by Ben Bova, but it was so long ago I don’t recall what. Fate of the Fallen is one I’d really like to read, and I’d be curious to check out Finding Serenity. It’s been far too long since I’ve rewatched Firefly and Serenity.

  3. Wow, what a haul! That would be enough to keep me busy for the rest of year. ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually have the buffy and Firefly books, and loved them. The essays are just so interesting! (There’s also a book about Angel…)

I really love books that talk about TV shows, especially when you’re obsessed with that show, it makes them so much more interesting:-)

  4. So many lovely books. I’m pea green over the Alma Katsu – I just love that author and want that book. But, I can’t really complain tbh – I have so many good books coming up. I look forward to reading your thoughts on your buddy read.

I’m terrified about the buddy read for some reason, lol. I’m not sure if we’re going to be discussing it amongst ourselves as we read? Or what? It should be interesting…

What an amazing haul! I can’t wait to get my hands on Gideon the Ninth – it’s coming in a book subscription box this month

  6. Haha- oh my gosh- jealous of so many things in this post. A- You were autoapporved by Macmillan for a few days and didn’t go request crazy?! I think I would have requested all the books, especially with their fall roster.

And Joe Hill! My request on that one has been hanging around forever too, although I still haven’t been approved. I’m wondering how many of those stories are new? I will say I don’t think The Fireman was his strongest work. You should definitely give NOS4A2 a try, or his short story collection Strange Weather is a good introduction to him.

Can’t wait to read your review on Fate of the Fallen!! I loved it so much.

That Macmillan thing was weird! I know of one other blogger (Caitlin) who said she was suddenly autoapproved, so I’m curious to see what her experience was. Yeah, I was thinking, “Cool, let me just think about what I REALLY want to read and I’ll come back later.” lol.

I’m so excited that you loved Fate of the Fallen! Was that your Goodreads win? Remember I won a book at the same time, but I still haven’t received mine!!

      • Sarah

Yeah FotF was a GR win. You still havenโ€™t gotten it? Thatโ€™s weird. I know I was surprised at how quickly mine came- it was just a few weeks and usually Iโ€™m waiting at least the 6 weeks before I go tattling to Good Reads I havenโ€™t received it yet. Lol

        • Tammy

I guess it depends on the publisher. I won The Remaking from Quirk Books so they must be a lot slower to send copies, I guess.

  7. Oh my goodness, I got Gideon the Ninth too and I was so sorry it came too late to make it into my roundup post because it’s so beautiful! The black sprayed edges were so cool, I didn’t know this was a special edition, that’s so nice of them to send it to us!

    • Tammy

I was very surprised to get a finished copy of Gideon! I had heard that the first printings were going to have black edges, but it’s more beautiful than I imagined:-)

  8. I’m a little late visiting this week – what can I say, it was one of those weekends. I love the cover of Sabbath but don’t know if it would interest me so I’m looking forward to your review. I’ve got to work a dragon book in before the end of the year for a challenge and have had my eyes on Stormrise. That is a gorgeous edition of Gideon the Ninth. Looks like you need to make more time for reading!

    • Tammy

I do need to make more time for reading. Hey, maybe I can stop being in charge of all the meals here!! That would totally give me more time to read. Ha ha I wish.

    • Tammy

Good question! I generally don’t feel obligated to read them. I almost feel like they send those series books out unsolicited because they have copies they need to get rid of! One day I’m going to ask a publicist

  9. Ooh, the black edges on Gideon the Ninth looks fantastic with that cover and aesthetic! I also just recently got approved for The Deep and I cannot wait to read it either! I’m excited for a lot of these as well, I really hope you enjoy all of them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I think the EW thing might have been a glitch, because I think the same thing happened to me? I grabbed a few books I’d been really looking forward to, but I was super confused about it. Oh my gosh, I LOVE the black sprayed edges on Gideon! It’s so pretty. <3 Looks like you got some really nice bookmail. :3 I've got The Deep, as well, but I've never read any of the author's work before, so I'm excited to hear that you enjoy her! Looking forward to reading her for the first time. Also, that cover for Stormrise is gorgeous! What a lovely haul you got. :3
