Future Fiction #30: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three exciting cover reveals this week!

Nina continues to learn how to use her slayer powers against enemies old and new in this second novel in the New York Times bestselling series from Kiersten White, set in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Now that Nina has turned the Watcher’s Castle into a utopia for hurt and lonely demons, she’s still waiting for the utopia part to kick in. With her sister Artemis gone and only a few people remaining at the castle—including her still-distant mother—Nina has her hands full. Plus, though she gained back her Slayer powers from Leo, they’re not feeling quite right after being held by the seriously evil succubus Eve, a.k.a. fake Watcher’s Council member and Leo’s mom.

And while Nina is dealing with the darkness inside, there’s also a new threat on the outside, portended by an odd triangle symbol that seems to be popping up everywhere, in connection with Sean’s demon drug ring as well as someone a bit closer to home. Because one near-apocalypse just isn’t enough, right?

The darkness always finds you. And once again, it’s coming for the Slayer.

Chosen (Slayer #2) by Kiersten White. Releases in January 2020 from Simon Pulse. I was thrilled to catch the cover reveal for this book just a few days ago, and I knew it would earn the top spot today! I had so much fun with the first book in the series, Slayer, and I can’t wait to see where Kiersten White takes her story next. Plus, I just met Kiersten at Comic Con this past weekend and I got to gush with her over this cover:-D

Kate Collins has been ghosted.

She was supposed to be moving in with her new boyfriend Scott, but all she finds after relocating to Brighton is an empty flat. Scott has vanished. His possessions have all disappeared.

Except for his mobile phone.

Kate knows she shouldn’t hack into Scott’s phone. She shouldn’t look at his Tinder, his calls, his social media. But she can’t quite help herself.

That’s when the trouble starts. Strange, whispering phone calls from numbers she doesn’t recognise. Scratch marks on the walls that she can’t explain. And the growing feeling that she’s being watched.

Kate refuses to leave the flat – she’s not going anywhere until she’s discovered what happened to Scott. But the deeper she dives into Scott’s digital history the more Kate realises just how little she really knows about the man she loves.

Ghoster by Jason Arnopp. Releases in October 2019 from Orbit Books. I absolutely LOVED The Last Days of Jack Sparks a couple of years ago, and I’ve been waiting impatiently for Jason’s next book. Luckily it’s coming out in a few months! This sounds like a bunch of fun, and I love that it revolves around our current social media craze. Should be fun!

The third and final installment in Kristi Charish’s thrilling urban fantasy series finds beloved heroine and voodoo practitioner Kincaid Strange shanghaied away from Seattle, and pursuing the ghost of a serial killer in Portland.

Just when Kincaid Strange thinks her life is back on track and she’s finally put her time as a paranormal practitioner with the Seattle PD to rest, her ex (and Seattle cop) Aaron asks her for help with yet another strange and ominous case. Martin Dane, the White Picket Fence Serial Killer who terrorized West Coast families living the suburban American dream, appears to be back at it with a fresh murder in Portland. There’s only one problem: Dane has been dead for three weeks.

Kincaid can’t resist a paranormal mystery. Despite her misgivings, she agrees to examine the Portland crime scene. What she discovers is a place of supernatural power unlike anywhere she’s ever been–and the reason Aaron had been so tight-lipped about the case details. There’s already a voodoo practitioner on the scene: Liam Sinclair, a TV celebrity of questionable talent and dubious intent.

Kincaid wants nothing more than to finish the job and retreat to Seattle, but the deeper she looks, the less the murder adds up. When she uncovers a much more sinister mystery–missing ghosts, scores of them, whom no one is looking for–there’s no turning back.

Voodoo Shanghai (Kincaid Strange #3) by Kristi Charish. Releases in February 2020 from Vintage Books Canada. I’m afraid I’m behind with this series and have not yet read Lipstick Voodoo (for shame!), but I couldn’t resist sharing this gorgeous cover, which was just revealed last week, I believe. I know I say this every time I talk about Kristi’s series, but I’m so surprised that it hasn’t been picked up by a U.S. publisher yet. It’s fantastic!

  1. Love the sound of Ghoster- I don’t know what it is about smart phones and ghost stories that work so well together but they do! Great picks this week.

I’m so curious to read Ghoster, and Jason Arnopp is such a great writer, I know he’ll do unexpected things with it.

  2. Well, you’ve nailed me with all three. Although I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had Slayer in my hands (library AND Overdrive) yet never read it. Maybe now I’ll be motivated. I never really watched Buffy (I know, a shame right) so I think the book might work better for me than a die-hard fan. Ghosted sounds great and the cover to Voodoo Shanghai is really cool.

I think non Buffy fans actually like the book more, because you know, she’s messing with our precious Buffy world, lol.

    • Tammy

Hey, we all have trouble reading EVERYTHING we want to, I know I do! You still have lots of time to catch up:-)

  3. That’s a really intriguing list – the one that shouts out to me is that final book… I’ve seen that series around and really like the premise – it doesn’t hurt that I also like the covers:). And I am now reminded that this is a series I haven’t yet got around to…

I think you’d love Kristi Charish’s series, it’s really well done urban fantasy. I really need to catch up!

  4. OOOH I want Ghoster!! I never made it through Slayer! I got bored and put it to the side and never picked it up again. I really need to give it another try but I know some Buffy fans were not thrilled with it so I at least know I wasn’t alone but I do need to try again! I also need to try the Kincaid Strange series as I have the first one on audio! Great picks!

I’m a big Buffy fan and there were definitely things I didn’t like about Slayer, but overall I thought it was pretty well done.

  5. Yes, so excited for all of these! I got an email about the Chosen cover a couple weeks back and I’m glad there’s finally a version without the “EW exclusive” watermark, lol. I also got an ARC of Ghoster earlier this month and it has that same cover, so I’m glad it wasn’t just a placeholder!

    • Tammy

Yeah, when I first saw the Ghoster cover I thought it was a placeholder, because it seems kind of bland to me?? But I guess this is the final. I got an ARC too, I’m excited:-)

    • Tammy

It seems like I just read Slayer recently, so I know what you mean! And yep, Ghoster sounds really good!

  6. I’m seeing that everyone’s excited over Ghoster, so it sounds like I need to put Slayer on my TBR asap! I love the range of covers this week. Such different ends of the color and design spectrum and all eye-catching. Another great share, Tammy!

  7. Eek – two reminders right here. I need to catch up with the last Charish book and I also need to read the Jack Sparks book. That could go on my challenge!
    Lynn 😀

I loved the first book, and it’s just sad that I haven’t kept up. Hopefully before book three comes out I can read book two:-)
