Future Fiction #16: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I have three exciting books to share this week!

Thieves, dangerous magic, and a weapon built with the power to destroy a god clash in this second novel of Gareth Hanrahan’s acclaimed epic fantasy series, The Black Iron Legacy.

Enter a city of spires and shadows . . .

The Gutter Miracle changed the landscape of Guerdon forever. Six months after it was conjured into being, the labyrinthine New City has become a haven for criminals and refugees.

Rumors have spread of a devastating new weapon buried beneath the streets – a weapon with the power to destroy a god. As Guerdon strives to remain neutral, two of the most powerful factions in the godswar send agents into the city to find it.

As tensions escalate and armies gather at the borders, how long will Guerdon be able to keep its enemies at bay?

The Shadow Saint continues the gripping tale of dark gods and dangerous magic that began with Hanrahan’s acclaimed debut The Gutter Prayer.

The Shadow Saint (The Black Iron Legacy #2) by Gareth Hanrahan. Releases in January 2020 from Orbit. First of all, I’m so excited to see this cover revealed, another stunner from artist Richard Anderson! I really loved The Gutter Prayer and I’m curious to see where Hanrahan is taking his story. Also, I feel sort of weird typing “2020”, it just doesn’t seem real to me for some reason:-D

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Night Circus, a timeless love story set in a secret underground world–a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues–a bee, a key, and a sword–that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians–it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose–in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. Releases in November 2019 from Doubleday Books. Is anyone else excited that there’s finally a new book from Erin Morgenstern?? Eight years after The Night Circus was released, it’s been a long wait, and hopefully it will be worth it. I love the sound of the blurb, so I’m not too worried.

Magic has a price—if you’re willing to pay.

Born into a family of powerful witchdoctors, Arrah yearns for magic of her own. But each year she fails to call forth her ancestral powers, while her ambitious mother watches with growing disapproval.

There’s only one thing Arrah hasn’t tried, a deadly last resort: trading years of her own life for scraps of magic. Until the Kingdom’s children begin to disappear, and Arrah is desperate to find the culprit.

She uncovers something worse. The long-imprisoned Demon King is stirring. And if he rises, his hunger for souls will bring the world to its knees… unless Arrah pays the price for the magic to stop him.

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron. Releases in September 2019 from Harper Voyager. I believe this is a debut, and in addition to this amazing cover, the story sounds right up my alley.  Harper Voyager has really been catching my eye with all their upcoming releases, and here’s another one I can’t wait to read!

Kingdom of Souls sounds fabulous! I still need to read The Night Circus (that’s its name right?) but already The Starless Sea seems to be getting a lot of hype.

I’m sure The Starless Sea will be a runaway bestseller, simply because people have been waiting so long for her follow up.

Richard Anderson is such a great artist, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s done the cover for some of my favorite books:-)

Me too! I’m really excited, Kingdom of Souls sounds like fun. I hope you love The Gutter Prayer!

To be honest I’m a little underwhelmed by the cover of The Starless Sea, I mean these days book cover art/design is so amazing that this kind of sticks out as a so-so cover.

I really enjoyed The Night Circus, but I am curious to see what she’s been doing for the last eight years. It should be amazing, right?? 😉

    • Tammy

I’m very excited about The Shadow Saint, and it’s hard to tear my eyes away from the cover:-)

    • Tammy

I’m just curious because it’s been so long between books. You would think it’s going to be amazing!

I loved The Night Circus but a lot of people didn’t, for some reason. I think her new one sounds great!
