Making book lists is one of my favorite things to do on this blog, and Sci Fi Month is the perfect opportunity to focus on upcoming science fiction books! I’ve put together a list of fourteen adult sci-fi books coming out in 2019 that I’m really excited for, and I hope to add to everyone’s already overloaded TBRs! Keep in mind that I’m only highlighting books that already have covers revealed, so books without covers are just going to have to wait:-D I’ve also got three more Waiting on Wednesday posts this month, so if you’re wondering why there are some books missing from this list, it’s possible they will be featured separately. You’ll just have to keep checking back here to see! I’m linking all these titles to Goodreads, so you have no excuse if you want to add them to your own TBR. These are listed in order of release date, so let’s get started! (dates subject to change)

#1 Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik. Launch date: 2/5/19 from Harper Voyager.

This is being described as “science fiction romance,” and I have to say that makes me giddy! I don’t read a lot of romance, but when I do it’s got to have speculative fiction elements to it.

#2 The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders. Launch date: 2/12/19 from Tor Books.

I’m a huge fan of Anders, and I’m thrilled to see she’s got a new book coming out next year. It’s been a few years since All the Birds in the Sky, and I can’t wait!

#3 Famous Men Who Never Lived by K Chess. Launch date: 3/5/19 from Tin House Books.

I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this book, but it really does sound good. Alternate history is my jam lately, and this tale of an alternate New York is just what I need:-D

#4 Ancestral Night by Elizabeth Bear. Launch date: 3/5/19 from Saga Press.

I have yet to read anything by Elizabeth Bear, I suck! I hope to remedy that next year, as this is the start to a new series.

#5 Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. Launch date: 3/7/19 from Saga Press/Simon & Schuster UK.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this debut from the UK publisher, and I’ve already read it, although I’ll be posting a review closer to release date. This was a solid 5-star read for me, and I can’t wait for you to read it too:-D

#6 The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley. Launch date: 3/19/19 from Saga Press.

I didn’t have the best luck with my first Hurley book, but I’d love to give her another chance. So many bloggers love her books. This is the start to a new series.

#7 The Municipalists by Seth Fried. Launch date: 3/19/19 from Penguin Books.

This is a debut, and I’m not sure how I found it. But I love the idea of a human and an AI going on an adventure together.

#8 Motherland by Lauren Beukes. Launch date: 4/1/19 from Mulholland Books.

It wouldn’t be a list without some post-apocalyptic SF on it, and this sounds great. Also, Lauren Beukes. Because I will read anything she writes.

#9 The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. Launch date: 4/2/19 from Harper Voyager.

This debut’s description includes comparisons to The Martian and Annihilation, so of course I can’t resist. This cover gets extra points too, because it’s super creepy!

#10 Atlas Alone by Emma Newman. Launch date: 4/16/19 from Ace Books.

This is the fourth book in Newman’s wonderful Planetfall series, and unfortunately I believe it’s the final book. I’ve loved each one and I’m excited to jump back into this world.

#11 Starship Repo by Patrick S. Tomlinson. Launch date: 5/21/19 from Tor Books.

I had a blast with Tomlinson’s Gate Crashers, and this looks like it will be just as fun. It’s going to be hard to wait for these books that are so far away from being released!

#12 Stealing Worlds by Karl Schroeder. Launch date: 6/18/19 from Tor Books.

This looks like it’s going to be a fun book for gamers, as the main character loves to play alternate reality games. I can’t wait!

#13 The Last Astronaut by David Wellington. Launch date: 7/23/19 from Orbit Books.

I know David Wellington for his horror books, and this may his first foray into science fiction. I love the idea of a retired astronaut recruited to man a ship into space to make first contact with aliens.

#14 Escaping Exodus by Nicky Drayden. Launch date: 8/20/19 from Harper Voyager.

This is the “furthest out” book on my list, boy does August 2019 seem far away! I have yet to read Draydon but hopefully next year is when I make that happen.

And that’s my list—so far! I feel like 2019 is going to be another banner year for science fiction. Let me know if you’re planning on reading any of these books:-D

  1. Oh god. My TBR. *Ominous creaking* Argh, it can’t take it! 😉

Really though. I simply MUST have that Emma Newman book – I’ve got Before Mars on my TBR for this month, and I’m with you. Those books are amazing.

  2. I love Nicky Drayden so I’ll be checking out that one for sure. I was just able to grab Temper, her latest, on sale for my Kindle which is good because my library never got it. I guess I can’t say I love her quite yet, but I did enjoy Prey of Gods and will definitely be giving this one a shot as well.

  3. Well thanks Tammy, as if I needed to add any more books to my TBR… xD
I added at least 8 of them to my list of 2019 anticipated releases!
I haven’t had the best of luck either with Hurley (I wasn’t a fan of The Stars are Legion even if the worldbuilding was fascinating) but I’m willing to give her another try. I’m definitely excited about Drayden’s next book and about Did You Dream of Terra Two, if you gave it five stars, I’m pretty sure I would like it too! 😉

  4. Spaceship Repo… Do You Dream of Terra-Two?… Atlas Alone… Yep – all on my TBR now. And I think you’re right – 2019 is going to be an AWESOME year for science fiction:))

Just about all of these are new to me. Added several to my TBR and might add more later. Like you I’ve never read Elizabeth Bear but would like to. Do You Dream of Terra-Two? sounds really good. And Atlas Alone is one I will definitely read. Great list, thanks!

  6. Wow, usually you and I have a lot of overlap on these types of lists, but I have to say there only a few here that are absolutely must-reads for me, and maybe it’s because I’ve started gravitating back towards fantasy this year. I definitely need to check out Polaris Rising and and Atlas Alone! But there are also a couple cases where I tried an author’s book and it just didn’t work out so now I’m a lot more hesitant about picking up their other stuff (Nicky Drayden, Kameron Hurley, Charlie Jane Anders etc.) so I’ll wait for your input before I decide to whether or not read those! 😀

This list is really varied. I’m definitely taking some chances with some of these that aren’t my normal authors or publishers. We’ll see!

  7. Atlas Alone will definitely be on my radar since I liked Before Mars so much. That was my first Emma Newman book and a very pleasant surprise. And Polaris Rising I’m really excited for, after reading the sample- it sounds super fun.

I love that cover too, it’s hard to see it unless you enlarge the photo, there are so many cool details.

  8. As much as I love YA, I’m really trying to read more Adult Novel, so this list is great. I have to get my hands on Polaris Rising. Sci-Fi Romance seems like something I will love!

    • Tammy

Me too! I’ve read some really good sci fi romance, so I’m looking forward to trying another author.
