What’s On My Plate – October 2018

It’s October! September was such a crazy month for me, as both kids left for college and I was very distracted. So ultimately I didn’t get to all my September review books. So this month, in addition to the books listed below, I have a couple September titles that I will be catching up on, even though I won’t mention them in this post. Better to surprise you (and myself!) than commit to a book I won’t be able to squeeze in.

I’m also excited for next month, when I’ll be participating for the fifth year (!!) in Sci-Fi Month, hosted by imyril. Click on that link to sign up!

And now, on to the books! Here is what I hope to read in October:

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand. I think this will be suitably creepy and scary for an October read, and I can hardly wait to get to it!

Unholy Land by Lavie Tidhar. I was a big fan of Central Station, and I hear this is quite different. Also, I really want to know why there is a giraffe on the cover!

Priest of Bones by Peter McLean. I’ve already read some gushing reviews of this book, and I’m looking forward to starting this new series.

100 Fathoms Below by Steven L. Kent & Nicholas Kaufmann. I’m thrilled to have four horror books on my list this month, and here is the second. Lots of high ratings on Goodreads, so I can’t wait!

Straight Outta Fangton by C.T. Phipps. Humorous vampire story? Yes, I definitely need one of those right now:-D

Dawn in Damnation by Clark Casey. This sounds so good, Damnation is sort of like a horrific purgatory with some very interesting rules…

The Little Shop of Found Things by Paula Brackston. I’ve been offered Brackston’s books in the past for review, but I don’t think I’ve actually read any. I’m determined to read this, I’ve heard really good things about this author. Have you read her?

The Darkest Star by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I haven’t read anything from Armentrout’s Lux series, and I believe this is set in the same world. I’m excited!

The Rule of One by Ashley Saunders and Leslie Saunders. This story sounds interesting, about a near-future world where couples are allowed to have only one child. I’m sure that’s going to go well…

Giveaways:

I’m super excited to announce that author Kristi Charish will be stopping by on Tuesday October 23 with a guest post and a giveaway for an ARC of her upcoming Lipstick Voodoo! I can’t wait to read this sequel to The Voodoo Killings. It doesn’t release until January, but you have an opportunity to win an early copy, so don’t forget to stop by!

Did you miss any of my reviews in September? Here’s what I read:

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. I don’t usually read books six months before pub date, but the kind folks at Simon & Schuster UK asked if I would blurb this book (!) and they wanted something by the end of September. I absolutely loved this debut and even though I haven’t written my review yet, I highly recommend it!

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix. SO. GOOD. Just read it!

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven

The Night Crossing by Robert Masello

The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen

The Mouth of the Dark by Tim Waggoner

Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel

The People’s Republic of Everything by Nick Mamatas

And that’s what my October looks like. Let me know if we’re reading any of the same books, and I’d love to hear what your most anticipated October read is!

  1. I think you got tons done in September, especially since you had two kiddos to get off to college. I have A LOT of horror I want to get to this month – new and not so new. I am adding 100 Fathoms Below to my wishlist although I know there’s no way I’ll get to it this month. I am hoping to make time for Sawkill Girls too. There are several books I plan on purchasing when they come out for my Kindle because I’m too anxious to wait for my library to get them. Hope you have a great month!

Thanks Barb! I feel like we have so much to choose from this month, especially if you’re adding in some older books. Should be a great month!

  2. I read (dabbled into)The Witch’s Daughter by Paula Brackston because I love the books cover, but I was disappointed. I am willing to give this author another chance and hopefully, The Little shop of found things will be something I can wrap my head around Idk. It’s on my kindle but I’m worried I won’t like it.
I really like the Lux series a lot but The Darkest Star was just Ok. Jennifer Armentrout’s Covenant series is the best IMO but it did get crazy for a while. I still have the Titan novels to read which I’m excited about. Other than that I have requested Priest of Bones and I think The mouth of the dark is calling me lol. I’m sorry this is so long but I find what other people are reading, interesting, or maybe it’s just you 🙂

I love seeing what everyone is reading too, now that you mention your thoughts on The Darkest Star I’m a little leery, but I still want to give it a shot:-)

  3. Looks like a great line-up! I’ve had my eye on Priest of Bones for months now, so my anticipation has definitely been building for that one! Sawkill Girls is also one that I’ve been interested in, and I’ve got Straight Outta Fangton on my October TBR as well. 🙂 I hope you get a chance to read all of these, they sound fantastic!

  4. Unholy Land has such a pretty cover, and I’m also curious why there are giraffes. They’re so tiny, but your eye goes straight to them lol. I just finished Straight Outta Fangton last night! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on that one and Dawn in Damnation 🙂

    • Tammy

I’m glad we’re both reading Straight Outta Fangton, it seems like it has some good reviews:-)

  5. Seems like just yesterday I was reading your What’s On My Plate post for September! How time flies. Thanks for the link to this year’s Sci-fi Month, I’m totally doing it again! Hadn’t seen the signup yet and didn’t know if anyone would be hosting this year, so this is fantastic news!

  6. *giggle* Straight out of Fangton! Vampires + humour = love it! As well as Priest of Bones — that cover is sooo striking. Also epic

    • Tammy

I love the title of Straight Outta Fangton, hey, vampire humor is something I don’t read often so it will be a nice change of pace.

  7. I have an ARC of Unholy Land as well and I am excited to dive in! I liked a lot of element of Central Station but being a collection of loosely linked short stories, it felt a bit disjointed. I really want to see what a “proper” Tidhar novel is going to be like! 🙂

    • Tammy

I agree, although the idea of the stories didn’t bother me, I would like to see what he can do with a continuous narrative.

    • Tammy

Good idea, at the very least I need to go back and read my review of The Voodoo Killings so I can remember what happened!

  8. Does this mean you have an empty nest? That means READING time, right?! I’m jealous. I don’t think mine are ever leaving, lol. I just finished up We Sold Our Souls. What an amazing ode to heavy metal and horror.

    • Tammy

Yes, I have an empty nest! It’s great so far, I definitely have more reading time. Ha ha, yours will leave eventually:-)

  9. I bet one of the September books you didn’t get to was VENGEFUL. 😉 Am I right?

Our October TBRs don’t have any books in common. But here’s what I plan to read this month:

    – Finish VENGEFUL by V.E. Schwab (should finish it tonight, actually!)
    – Return to and finish THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA by Scott Lynch
    – MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor
    – BLANCA & ROJA by Anna-Marie McLemore
    – PRACTICAL MAGIC by Alice Hoffman
